HUNTERS – WE NEED YOUR GROUSE WINGS AND TAILS

Grouse and mountain quail wings and tails provide ODFW biologists important information about the health of the populations. Hunters can help by donating a wing and tail from harvested grouse and mountain quail.

What to Do: 1. Remove one entire wing and whole tail including small rump feathers. 2. Place in PAPER collecting bags provided at ODFW offices or use your own PAPER bag (1 bird per bag). 3. Mark the bag with the date taken, county taken, and general location. 4. Drop bag off at designated collection sites located around the state or at ODFW offices. 5. If there will be a delay in dropping off your bag, please freeze it.

For additional information, including bags and pre-paid return envelopes, please call 503-947-6301.

HUNTING IN OREGON Hunters understand the importance to care for meat while in the field to protect it from spoiling. The edible portion of a game bird means, at a minimum the meat of the breast associated with the sternum. However, the Department encourages hunters to consume meat from the leg (drumstick), thigh, and wing when practicable. Many hunters don’t realize how much meat is lost when just the breast is consumed. On most game birds, 25% to 35% of the meat is found on just the legs and thighs, with only 55% to 60% found on the breast.

MORE OPPORTUNITY COMES WITH GREATER RESPONSIBILITY

For 30 years NW Oregon hunters have proven their ability to avoid harvesting dusky geese and we still need your help to keep goose hunting in NW Oregon a great opportunity!

• With a closed dusky goose season, it is now more important than ever for hunters to hold their fire unless they are sure their target is not a dusky Canada goose. • Cackling geese are very abundant and relatively easy to identify. Hunters should shift their hunting efforts toward cacklers to avoid a costly mistake. • The online NW goose identification materials were revised with new information in 2015-16. Hunters are strongly encouraged to periodically review the materials to stay informed.

The future of goose hunting seasons in NW Oregon is in your hands. Should unlawful harvest of dusky geese lead to reduced dusky populations, managers may have no choice but to restrict hunting opportunities for all Canada geese in the region. 24 2018-19 OREGON GAME BIRD REGULATIONS We are Going on a Snipe Hunt

Snipe hunting has mostly been a practical joke for many first-time participants. The gullible child is convinced to go into the woods at night with a pillowcase trying to catch a snipe, only to find out later that the trickster left them alone as they attempted to catch or call-in a non-existent creature. Many people with summer camp memories of this mythical creature don’t realize that snipe actually are a real bird and provide a challenging and underutilized hunting opportunity.

What does a snipe look like? Snipe are medium-sized shorebirds with a mottled pattern of light to dark browns, black, and rusty colored feathers and some have off-white edging. They have a long straight bill and their back has distinct narrow light colored stripes. Snipe are most commonly confused with another shorebird called a dowitcher, so remember to study up on what your target looks like as snipe are the only shorebird that you can hunt in Oregon. Photo courtesy of David Budeau Here are several differences: dowitchers are slightly larger and have a large white patch on their back that is visible in flight. Like hunting, trapping is an important wildlife management tool.

Don’t Let Your Dog Chase Wildlife It’s dangerous for your dog, and against the law, because it harms wildlife — especially during the winter, when dogs can put more pressure on vulnerable animals trying to conserve energy. State law prohibits people from allowing their pets to “harass” (chase, molest, worry, disturb) wildlife, except when hunting or during pursuit seasons. (Pursuit season is Sept. 1 - Jan. 31 for wild hatched upland birds.) See wildlife area regulations for information on training dogs at wildlife areas.

Raw Fish and Stagnant Water — Dangerous for Dogs Don’t let your dog eat raw salmon. It can carry the bacteria that causes deadly salmon poisoning disease (SPD) in dogs. Dogs can become severely ill when they eat fish with bacteria. Signs of SPD in a dog are a high fever within 5-7 days of eating fish, lack of appetite, depression, dehydration, vomiting, and watery/bloody diarrhea. Seek immediate veterinary care if you think your dog has SPD — most dogs die if left untreated. (Care usually requires specific antibiotics to kill the bacteria, a wormer and intravenous rehydration.) Freeze fish at -4 degrees F (-20 degrees C) for 24 hours or thoroughly cook it to kill the bacteria that cause SPD.

47 OREGON GAME BIRD STAMPS

2018 Oregon Waterfowl Stamp 2018 Oregon Upland Game Bird Stamp

Bufflehead by Richard Clifton Blue Grouse by Rod Frederick

Game Bird stamps are not automatically mailed to hunter. Game bird validations are printed on the hunting license, so it is no longer required that state hunting stamps be carried in the field. As a courtesy for several years ODFW had continued to mail the stamps to hunters each spring. However, some hunters are not interested in receiving the stamps. This, coupled with increasing production and mailing costs and mandates for all state agencies to reduce operational costs, prompted ODFW to begin a program where hunters with game bird validations can request stamps at no additional charge. This program saves a substantial amount of money which is used for programs such as game bird population surveys and habitat development. To request your game bird stamp(s), complete the on-line application: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/waterfowl/stamp_order_form.asp

Art Prints Available for Purchase!

The sale of prints helps fund game bird research, surveys, habitat improvement, and conservation projects. See the upland game bird and waterfowl program websites or call 503-947-6301 for more information. 2015 Upland Game Bird 2015 Waterfowl
