Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs, informing me that Shri Arun Jaitley, Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs and Defence will be the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. I have also to inform Members that I have recognized Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of the Indian National Congress Party in the Rajya Sabha as the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha with effect from the 8th of June, 2014.” 12-57 p.m. 6. President’s Address Laid on the Table Secretary-General laid on the Table, a copy (in English and Hindi) of the President’s Address to both the Houses of Parliament assembled together on the 9th of June, 2014. 34382 12-58 p.m. 7. This came to forefront with Arundhati Roy’s introduction to Ambedkar’s ‘Annihilation of Caste’ published by Navayana. In her introduction ‘Doctor and the Saint’ Roy is critical of Gandhi’s various ideas. This digest brings together some of the essays and articles by various scholars-activists on the theme. D. Cornell University 2009 How do religious parties with historically elite support bases win the mass support required to succeed in democratic politics? This dissertation examines why the world’s largest such party, the upper-caste, Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has experienced variable success in wooing poor Hindu populations across India. Briefly, my research demonstrates that neither conventional clientelist techniques used by elite parties, nor strategies of ideological polarization favored by religious parties, explain the BJP’s pattern of success with poor Hindus. Instead the party has relied on the efforts of its ‘social service’ organizational affiliates in the broader Hindu nationalist movement. The dissertation articulates and tests several hypotheses about the efficacy of this organizational approach in forging party-voter linkages at the national, state, district, and individual level, employing a multi-level research design including a range of statistical and qualitative techniques of analysis. In doing so, the dissertation utilizes national and author-conducted local survey data, extensive interviews, and close observation of Hindu nationalist recruitment techniques collected over thirteen months of fieldwork.     India 2025 : Likely Levels of Violence by Vijay Karan Introduction In the history of a country, especially one so “aged” as India, twenty five years is a very small period indeed. And yet, twenty five years can be a very long time, a very eventful time, a very transforming time. In terms of economic prosperity, India has little to show even fifty years after it became independent. That things seem to be changing now is a different matter. We will have to wait till 2020 or 2025 to see whether the current economic reforms bring widespread economic well being, if not prosperity. At the same time, to India’s enormous credit, when it became independent, famine loomed over much of the country, like a long shadow of death. Twenty five years later, famine as a threat had all but disappeared. Today, India has already emerged as one of the world’s largest producers of so many food products – milk, milk products, fruit, rice, sugar, wheat etc. Our granaries are overflowing and we don’t seem to know what to do with our food. Ironically, one-third of India still lives below the poverty line. Violence is a worldwide phenomenon and has dogged humanity all through history. The twentieth century, with two world wars and the Holocaust was perhaps the bloodiest period mankind has ever experience. Things now seem to be changing, wisdom seems to be at last dawning on humans and for the first time in human history, peace seems to have a chance. Violence need not necessarily have a cycle or pattern, though broadly, it has of late been seen that violence diminishes with prosperity, showing its profound economic dimension.

A priest for a short period, a trade unionist, agriculturist, political activist, human rights activist, parliamentarian and journalist all rolled into one. George Fernandes led the famous Railway strike involving 1.5 million workers in 1974, where the entire nation was brought to a halt. Former Chairman of the Socialist Party of India, former Minister of Communications, former Minister of Industry, Minister of Railways and Minister for Defense, George Fernandes was full of surprises. He has distinction of being minister in Prime Ministers, Morarji Desai, VP Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet. A politician who long campaigned against the Atom bomb was one of the Champions of India India's nuclear power. Fernandes set new standards as Defense Minister by braving the inhospitable Himalayan heights to visit troops on the battlefront and became the darling of the jawans. But at the fag end of his political carrier George Fernandes' name figured prominently in a corruption case. The scandal caused uproar and Fernandes had to resign to his post as a Defense Minister. George Fernandes was suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and his wife Leila Kabir was taking good care of him. He passed away after a very long sickness on 29th January 2019 in New Delhi. He was 88). A study of India’s Bharatiya Janata party and Austria’s Freedom Party In the decades following WWII, countries across the globe witnessed the rise of anti- system parties. Political scientists have attributed their success to economic conditions, electoral systems, party systems and the electorate’s disaffection with mainstream parties. This analysis also suggests the influence of global factors. While the causes for success have been examined, effective policy choices for democracies have not been equally explored.
