FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JUNE 6, 2017 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS INVITE FANS TO 2017 NHL AWARDS VIEWING PARTY AT THE BLUESTONE ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21 Watch party to celebrate the Blue Jackets having an NHL‐high four finalists for five awards will include appearances by forwards Boone Jenner and Oliver Bjorkstrand COLUMBUS, OHIO – In celebration of the four Blue Jackets that have been named finalists for five individual NHL honors, the club invites fans to The Bluestone (583 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43215) for a party to watch the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft on Wednesday, June 21. The televised event will celebrate the League’s top talent from the 2016‐17 season and reveal the initial roster of the League’s 31st team, the Vegas Golden Knights. Doors at The Bluestone will open at 7 p.m. with live coverage from the T‐Mobile Arena in Las Vegas beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Blue Jackets forwards Boone Jenner and Oliver Bjorkstrand will join fans at The Bluestone, while CBJ finalists representing the club in Las Vegas include Sergei Bobrovsky (Vezina Trophy – top goaltender; Hart Trophy – most valuable to his team), Nick Foligno (Mark Messier Leadership Award), Zach Werenski (Calder Memorial Trophy ‐ most outstanding rookie) and John Tortorella (Jack Adams Award ‐ coach of the year). Blue Jackets radio play‐by‐play announcer Bob McElligott will host the event and conduct a question and answer session with Jenner and Bjorkstrand throughout the evening. Fans will have a chance to win a meet & greet with the players during the party and one lucky fan will win a trip to Las Vegas for the Blue Jackets’ first‐ever road game against the Golden Knights. Other opportunities include the chance to win one of the new 2017‐18 Blue Jackets adidas jerseys. Tickets to the viewing party are available now at www.BlueJackets.com/CBJawards. General admission tickets are free, but limited, and all ages are welcome. VIP tickets are $10 and include guaranteed entry into the event, one paid drink ticket, a limited‐edition commemorative print and automatic entry into the raffle for the Las Vegas trip. How to Coach Generation Z POSTED JULY 10, 2017 GLEN MULCAHY Youth sport coaches needs to be aware we have now evolved from the Millenials, known for their sense of entitlement, to Generation Z, known for their screen addictions (7.5 hours a day) who are also known as The Digital Natives, iGen, Homelanders, Selfie Generation. These are kids that were born after 1996, 100% in the digital era per below timeline; Not including various Video Game Consoles (Playstation, Xbox, Nitentendo) and other social media, and as the cliché goes, “There is an ap for that”.. I can speak with the perspective of coaching Gen Z kids as they entered organized sports at the age of 5 but also as parent of two that were part of the youth sports system since 2000. As each year evolved and technology became more of our day to day lives, I also had to adapt my parenting and coaching styles to relate to this generation. I saw the digital era evolve pre internet, then IBM clones with 5 ¼” floppies with approx. 0.5Mb storage capability (when a micro SD card now hold 128 GB), amber screens taking up ½ a desk, dial-up evolving to cable and DSL high speed, Computer monitors and TV’s changing from tubes to LCD, then LED, now OLED and the list goes on. There was no digital era when my generation played sport, now it is commonplace with parents on the sidelines filming with smartphones, tablets and checking latest aps for schedules, scores, streaming of siblings games etc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 15, 2020 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS HEAD COACH JOHN TORTORELLA NAMED A FINALIST FOR JACK ADAMS AWARD AS NHL’S TOP HEAD COACH IN 2019-20 Tortorella won award in 2016-17 with Columbus and 2003-04 with Tampa Bay, was runner-up in 2002-03 and 2011-12 COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach John Tortorella has been named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, presented annually to the NHL’s coach of the year as voted on by the National Hockey League Broadcasters’ Association, the club and League announced today. Bruce Cassidy of the Boston Bruins and Alain Vigneault of the Philadelphia Flyers are the other two finalists. This season marks the fourth time Tortorella has been named a finalist for the award as he won it in 2016-17 with Columbus and 2003-04 with the Tampa Bay Lightning and was runner-up in both 2002-03 (Tampa Bay) and 2011-12 (New York Rangers). Tortorella led the Blue Jackets to a 33-22-15 record (81 pts.) in 70 games in 2019-20, leading the club into the postseason during a campaign in which Columbus led the NHL with 419 man games lost due to injury and following a season in which the club’s top scorer and starting goaltender in 2018-19 left the club via free agency. The Blue Jackets’ .579 points percentage this season is the fourth-best in franchise history. Tortorella, who was named head coach of the Blue Jackets on Oct. 21, 2015, has led the club to a 209-140-42 record (.588 points percentage) in 391 regular season games and owns franchise records for most wins and highest points percentage.

The goal of the program is offer BC coaches the support of mentors who have coaching experience at levels which local and regional coaches aspire to ascend to in the future, and to create a feeling of cohesiveness amongst both as they work and learn together in an informal environment. This month, BC Hockey is thrilled to have Ken Hitchcock, Advisor for the Edmonton Oilers, lead September’s Coaches Club video conference. KEN HITCHCOCK BIO: Ken Hitchcock joined the Oilers after having served as a Head Coach with Dallas twice (1995-2002, 2017-18), Philadelphia (2002-2006), Columbus (2006-2010) and St. Louis (2011-2017). Hitchcock, a native of Edmonton, AB, is the third-winningest coach in NHL history with a total of 849 victories. He led Dallas to a Stanley Cup in 1999 and captured the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach in 2011-12. Overall, Hitchcock has a record of 823-506-88-119 record in 1,536 games, with a .603 winning percentage. He has guided his teams to eight division titles (1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2003-04, 2011-12 and 2014-15) and two Presidents Trophies (1997-98 and 1998-99). Hitchcock has coached the fifth most games in NHL history, second among active coaches behind only Barry Trotz (1,598). In his 22-year coaching career, he made 14 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with an 86-82 record in 168 postseason games coached.
