  • Short Review: the “Austin Powers” Films by Dr. John L. Flynn Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), New Line Ci
Short Review: The “Austin Powers” films by Dr. John L. Flynn Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), New Line Cinema, color, 94 min. Director: Jay Roach. Writer: Mike Myers. Producers: Demi Moore, Mike Myers, etc. Cast: Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York, and Mimi Rogers. Someone just had to do another spoof series of James Bond movies (the Flint series with James Coburn, the Matt Helm series with Dean Martin, notwithstanding), and Mike Myers also camped up the whole 60’s decade—London’s Carnaby Street fashions, psychedelic art. .Yeah, baby! With Mrs. Kensington (Rogers) in tow, much like The Avengers British TV series, espionage agent Powers (Myers) pursues the loathsome Dr. Evil (Powers too) through the 60’s. Both make the jump to the 1990’s (thanks to the convenience of cryonic sleep), and Dr. Evil sets out to dominate the world, while Powers has plans to shag his former partner’s daughter Vanessa Kensington (the sensuous Hurley). The comedy ranges from satire to bathroom humor, but the babes look great in their tight, leather outfits or short, short skirts and go-go-boots! Who cares if it doesn’t make much sense! Have fun. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). (aka Austin Powers 2). New Line Cinema, Color, 95 min. Director: Jay Roach. Writers: Mike Myers and Michael McCullers. Producers: Demi Moore, Mike Myers, etc. Cast: Mike Myers, Heather Graham, Michael York, and Robert Wagner. Less spoofing and more bathroom humor in this Powers sequel! Dr. Evil (Myers) uses a “Time- Tunnel”- like time machine to travel back to the late 60’s, and steal Powers’ (Myers too) mojo, but sexy, go-go girl Felicity Shagwell (Graham) puts him at his ease with some tender-loving shagging of her own.

  • Textual Analysis Film: Do the Right Thing (1989) Director: Spike Lee Sequence Running Time: 00:50:55 - 00:55:55 Word Count: 1745
Student sample Textual Analysis Film: Do The Right Thing (1989) Director: Spike Lee Sequence Running Time: 00:50:55 - 00:55:55 Word Count: 1745 In this paper I will analyze an extract from Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing (1989) that reflects the political, geographical, social, and economical situations through Lee's stylistic use of cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound to communicate the dynamics of the characters in the cultural melting pot that is Bedford-Stuyvesant,Brooklyn in New York City. This extract manifests Lee's artistic visions that are prevalent in the film and are contemplative of Lee's personal experience of growing up in Brooklyn. "This evenhandedness that is at the center of Spike Lee's work" (Ebert) is evident through Lee's techniques and the equal attention given to the residents of this neighborhood to present a social realism cinema. Released almost thirty years ago, Lee's film continues to empower the need for social change today with the Black Lives Matter movement and was even called "'culturally significant'by the U.S. Library of Congress" (History). Do The Right Thing takes place during the late 1980s in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and unravels the "bigotry and violence" (Lee) in the neighborhood of a single summer day, specifically one of the hottest of the season. Being extremely socially conscious, Do The Right Thing illustrates the dangers of racism against African Americans and was motivated by injusticesof the time--especially in New York--such as the death of Yusef Hawkins and the Howard Beach racial incident.

  • Oscar-Winning 'Slumdog Millionaire:' a Boost for India's Global Image?
ISAS Brief No. 98 – Date: 27 February 2009 469A Bukit Timah Road #07-01, Tower Block, Singapore 259770 Tel: 6516 6179 / 6516 4239 Fax: 6776 7505 / 6314 5447 Email: [email protected] Website: www.isas.nus.edu.sg Oscar-winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’: A Boost for India’s Global Image? Bibek Debroy∗ Culture is difficult to define. This is more so in a large and heterogeneous country like India, where there is no common language and religion. There are sub-cultures within the country. Joseph Nye’s ‘soft power’ expression draws on a country’s cross-border cultural influences and is one enunciated with the American context in mind. Almost tautologically, soft power implies the existence of a relatively large country and the term is, therefore, now also being used for China and India. In the Indian case, most instances of practice of soft power are linked to language and literature (including Indians writing in English), music, dance, cuisine, fashion, entertainment and even sport, and there is no denying that this kind of cross-border influence has been increasing over time, with some trigger provided by the diaspora. The film and television industry’s influence is no less important. In the last few years, India has produced the largest number of feature films in the world, with 1,164 films produced in 2007. The United States came second with 453, Japan third with 407 and China fourth with 402. Ticket sales are higher for Bollywood than for Hollywood, though revenue figures are much higher for the latter. Indian film production is usually equated with Hindi-language Bollywood, often described as the largest film-producing centre in the world.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

  • Models of Time Travel
MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

There’s nothing like reading a book about film, but viewing, analyzing and deconstructing are best when you have access to films, and extras, that will help your students better understand the languages of film.
