UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Conversation is a spoken text that can be observed through its structure. The structure itself is built within the social context. According to Martin (1992), conversation is structured in terms of move. The move refers to the function or role played by speaker (addresser) in relation to the function or role played by the listener

(addressee) and the commodity being exchanged. The exchange structure in conversation is built in one part of the contents as its speech function. In addition, systematically realization of moves are related to speech function and Mood.

The conversational structure is realized by initiate or respond moves and the exchanging commodity presented in SFL theory and it is also realized through the speech function used by Khabib Nurmagomedov at ESPN program and the press conferenve event.

ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) is the leading sports channel in the United States, covering a wide variety of sporting events on its wide variety of channels. One of the sport channels that hold is UFC (Ultimate Fighting

Championship) is an American promotion company. There are many artists that join in UFC, one of them is Khabib Nurmagomedov a Russian professional mixed martial artist. On 6 October 2018, Khabib Nurmagomedov is made his first defense of the UFC against his rival Connor McGregor. In this event, both had incident that created a controversy continues to this day. The reason is because the trash talk from his rival‟s people. This incident becomes viral in social media for a long time. After the incident, Khabib Nurmagomedov is invited for the

1

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA interview with Brett Okamoto, is a breaking news reporter and an interviewer for

MMA (Mixed Martial Art) at ESPN, for the explanation about the incident. From this interview created a conversation that the writer uses as the data of this study.

This study focuses on what Halliday calls the interpersonal metafunction of language use, which is concerned with the interaction between the speaker and the hearer. At the discourse level an interaction can be analysed interpersonally according to its exchange structure. The exchange structure analysis in this study was based on

Martin.

Exchanges take place at discourse level. The exchange is made up of `moves‟, which are the basic units of analysis. A move is a unit of information and an exchange is composed of a sequence of moves. When involved in an exchange, one is either (a) demanding or giving information, or (b) demanding or giving action.

Exchange analysis has two types of moves; synoptic moves, which serve to ask for or provide information, and dynamic moves which can be embedded in an exchange to perform the functions of negotiating meanings, such as confirmation, clarification, or challenge. Subjects and their communication partners can be both primary (K1) and secondary knowers (K2) in different exchanges. Moves consist of K1, K2, K1f and

K2f moves during exchanges of information. If the request or receipt of action is occurring, the exchanges are made up of the moves of A1, A2, A1f and A2f.

Naturally, in conversation there is a message is organized and delivered among the speakers. According to Halliday (2014), the message can be recognized as speech role that are giving or demanding information and goods and services. Giving and demanding are the essences of communication that must be noticed in order to avoid misunderstandings occur among the speakers and the listeners. In this case, the

2

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA researcher explained the form of utterances in conversation of Khabib

Nurmagomedov by using the Martin‟s theory. When the speaker utters something through question, he is actually requiring the listener to receive it. While requiring give information when he utters something through command or offer.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is an effective way to analyze language data and focus on the analysis of functions of language with reference to different contexts. The context of a situation is arranged in three categories: field, tenor and mode. Corresponding to that, Halliday (2014) analyzes language into three broad Metafunctions: Experiential, Interpersonal and Textual Metafunctions. Each of the three Metafunctions is about a different aspect of the world and concerned with a different mode of meaning of clauses, of which, it is through the Interpersonal

Metafunction that users of language establish, negotiate and assume their position in social relationships, and it is concerned with clauses as exchange.

Why these exchanges be important to be discussed is because in the exchanges of Khabib, there are two possible orientation stated by Martin, that is

Knowledge and Action. It resonates with the commodities being exchanged whether the commodities are information or goods and services. When the orientation is information, the exchange structure may have the initiation of demanding information. The exchange realized by K1 and K2, which K1 as the primary knower and K2 is the secondary knower for the exchange of information. When the orientation is Action, the exchange structure may have an initiation of demanding goods and services. The exchange is used A1 and A2, where A1 as the primary actor and A2 is the secondary actor.

3

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA From the structure of conversation expressed in conversation of Khabib

Nurmagomedov based on systemic functional linguistics, this study focuses on structure of the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov at ESPN program and the press conference by using theory of Martin. In order to examine how the exchanges are created by both speakers, whether their exchanges are in the types of clarification, challenge or confirmation through the dynamic aspects of conversation.

The reasons choose this interview is because the ESPN program has a lot of sports, especially is UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). In addition to the first reason, the figure of Khabib Nurmagomedov is a muslim fighter who won the fighting against his enemy, Conor McGregor, the man who started the public controversy before this event took place. But Khabib kept pretty cool when Conor left without a doubt to make fun of him.

Conor's treatment of Khabib was the beginning of the argument between the two of them and it influences on the UFC world as well. They form disagreements that get them suspended and barred to fight for nine months. The dispute between the two of them continues to this day.

Because less knowledge and material about the conversational structure, the researcher wants to emphasize and expand knowledge of the study among students in particular English literature in analyzing a conversation using the SFL theory. Also, to introduce more deeply into how a conversation can be analyzed using K1, K2, A1, and A2.

As the speech function and Mood structure have a type, such as declarative, interrogative, imperative, statement, question, command, and offer. Conversational

4

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA structure is also has the types called as dynamic aspects of conversation, challenge, clarification, and confirmation. Each of them has a different function in conversation.

Related to this study, the conversation structure in an interview forms a different pattern to the conversation structure in general. Generally, the structure of the conversation is used to analyze the conversation in daily life, so that the process of exchange is more complex and accurate. The point is in daily conversation the speaker and the listener are more active in speaking, the two exchange information together producing a giving and demanding process in the exchange of information or goods and services. But this is different from a conversation in an interview, the speaker and the listener do not take the role more actively. The speaker is more dominant in asking to listener for information so that the exchange of information or goods and services consists of giving or demanding only, not both. The researcher then presents the analysis of data that produce a formula for the conversation used by

Khabib Nurmagomedov at ESPN program and the press conference. The researcher explains how the conversation structure in the conversation is as well as what dynamics aspect is made by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto.

1.2 Problem of the Study

1. How the conversational structure is used by Khabib Nurmagomedov in

conversation?

2. How is the dynamic aspects realized in the conversation created by Khabib

Nurmagomedov?

1.3 Objective of the Study

1. To analyze the structure in the conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov.

5

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2. To identify the realization of dynamic aspects in the conversational structure

created by Khabib Nurmagomedov in conversation.

1.4 Scope of the Study

The scope of the study is limited to the dynamic aspects in the structure of conversation Khabib Nurmagomedov at ESPN (Entertainment and Sports

Programming Network) program and press conference event based on Halliday‟s theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) specifically interpersonal function and the theory of conversational structure by Martin.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The result of this study is hopefully useful for the wider community. The usefulness of the study is expected as the followings:

1.5.1 Theoretical Significance:

This study is expected to be beneficial to enrich the lectures. It is also a contribution to the writer to get more knowledge especially about the structure of conversation.

1.5.2 Practical Significance:

It is hoped that the result of this study can give a valuable contribution for another further research and encourage English Department students to learn about

Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially the conversational structure.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

2.1 Theoretical Framework

2.1.1 Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory

Systemic functional linguistics is the study of the relationship between language and its functions in social settings. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was first introduced in England in 1961 by M.A.K. Halliday through several seminal papers. He developed the work of J.R. Firth, a British linguist, who was his teacher.

In the seventies, he moved to Australia to establish the Department of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. Through his teaching there, SFL has spread to a number of institutions throughout Australia and around the world.

SFL, which is also known as Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), is a model of grammar which constitutes part of a broad social semiotic approach to language called systemic linguistics. The term systemic refers to the view of language as a network of systems, or interrelated sets of options for making meaning; the term functional indicates that the approach is Metafunctions. Initially, Halliday‟s postulation of SFG by his publication Systemic Background in 1985 did not get much attention from other linguists. Finally, in 1994 he published a more comprehensive monograph entitled An Introduction to Functional Grammar, which now becomes the main reference of the theory of SFG by most Functional

Grammarians across the world.

The Systemic Functional Grammar approach in linguistics considers grammar in terms of usage and the creation of meaning. It takes the resource

7

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA perspective rather than the rule perspective; and it is designed to display the overall system of grammar rather than only fragment (Halliday & Mathiessan 2004).

In Systemic Functional Grammar, language is viewed as a resource for making meaning and so it describes language in its actual use in terms of texts and their contexts. Therefore, this theory attempts to describe how the structures of a text construct meanings and how the meanings of the text can be realized. Halliday (1994) explains that a language consists of a set of systems and the speaker or the writer may choose the ways of expressing meanings. When people use a language to express meanings, they do so in specific situations, and the form of the language that they use is influenced by the complex elements of those situations. He claims that all adult language is organized around a small number of functional components which correspond to the metafunctions have a systematic relationship with the lexicogrammar of the language.

Systemic Functional Grammar, on the other hand, labels elements of the clause in terms of the function each is playing in that clause rather than by the word class.

He wants to make me nervous

Participant Process Circumstance

Table 2.1 Systemic functional grammar

2.1.2 Metafunction of Language

Language is used in three different functions known as the three metafunctions of language. These metafunctions are the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual. The ideational function means that language is used to organize, understand, and express the speaker‟s perceptions of the world and of his

8

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA consciousness, and this function divides into two: the experiental function and the logical function.

The experiental function is largely concerned with contents or ideas which regard clauses as the representations of experience in terms of transitivity structures, which are represented with processes and associated with participants and circumstances. The logical function is concerned with the relationship between ideas in clause complexes. It defines the logic-semantic relation between one clause and another which covers expansion and projection and it also defines clause complexes from the interdependency relation whether they are paratactic or hypotactic.

The interpersonal function means that language is used to enable the speaker to participate in communicative acts with other people, to take on roles and to express and understand feelings, attitude, and judgments. The textual function means that language is used to relate what is said or written to the real world and to other linguistic events. This involves the use of language to organize the text itself in terms of thematic structures, covering theme and rheme, which express the organization of the message; how the clause relates the surrounding discourse to the context of situation and the unity of meaning in text known as cohesion constitutes the realization of the textual function.

In this study, the writer focuses on the interpersonal function. Interpersonal function is concerned with the relationship set up between the speaker and his audience, and between the speaker and his message. Thus, the interaction between the speaker and the speaker will involve respective turns in the speech functions, and they take on different speech roles and commodity in the exchange. If a speaker gives some information, it is inherently inviting you to receive that information. If a speaker offers some goods or some service, the speaker inherently inviting us to

9

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA receive those goods and services. Or if the speaker demands information, inherently we are invited to give that information. And if the speaker demands some goods or services of us, we are thereby invited to render that service or provide the goods.

Combinations of options:

Commodity Exchange Speech Function

Demanding goods and services Command

information Question

Table 2.2 Speech roles and commodities in interaction (based on Halliday 1994:

69)

Note : Offer can be realized to declarative, imperative, and interrogative.

Someone will use language to interact each other, they are doing the establishing a relationship between the person speaking now and the person who are probably speak next. The basic unit for analyzing dialog is the exchange, which is a set of moves which together develop a single proposition (or in some cases, a propositional complex). The dialogue is „a process of exchange‟ involving two variables: a commodity to be exchange: either information or goods and services, and roles associated with exchange relations: either giving or demanding. The simultaneous cross classification of these two variables of exchange commodity and exchange role defines the four basic speech functions.

The four functions which are used by speaker in exchanging the experiences are question, statement, command and offer. These four are realized in the form of mood, modality, epithet, exchange structure, which builds conversational structure.

10

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA From the speaker‟s point of view in a verbal exchange, the commodity that the speaker may be giving or demanding is information. In such cases, the speaker makes statement to give information, or asks a question to demand it and the listener receive (understand) the information that the speaker gives or provides the information demanded (answers the question). But sometimes the demanding of information or goods and services is not always done by making the statement, it can be done by making order or question. It depends on the relationship between the speaker (addresser) and listener (addressee). It means that, whether the addressee or the addresser must be focus on what will be done by them to exchange their experiences, giving and demanding information or goods and services because the exchange of commodity is closely related with the use of speech functions.

In communication, particularly in a conversation, people use language interpersonally, interact with other people, and control their behavior. The interpersonal is reflecting the function of language as a means whereby the speaker participates in the speech situation. In text, there are three kinds of meaning. They are ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning, and textual meaning. Interpersonal meaning cover two main areas: one concerns the types of interaction taking place and the kind of commodity being exchanged, and the other concerns the way speakers take a position in their messages.

In the conversation, the interpersonal meaning system is come up by the participants is conversation, they adopt and assign roles. Matthiessen (1995: 687) says that form an interpersonal point of view, a nominal group enacts elements of information as given or demanded, persons and attitudes. It is a part (dialogic) exchange between speaker and addressee, where commodities are given and demanded: and it enacts the interpersonal universe with the interactants as part of

11

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA dialogic centre. Through the opinions, the speaker adopts a role, a set of roles and also assigns roles to others speakers, while accepting or rejecting those that are assigned to him; he expresses his own judgments, his own attitudes, his own personality, and in doing exerts certain effects on the hearer. They adopt and assign the roles as a channel and as a model for social interaction.

Based on the statement about the conversation and interpersonal meaning, it can be figured out that conversation has a function to inform the interpersonal meaning in language. It focuses on interpersonal meaning that involves looking at what kinds of role relations are established through talk, what attitudes interactants express to about each other, what kinds of things they find funny, and how they negotiate to take turns, etc.

2.1.3 Structure of Conversation

Language structure used in communication is motivated by language function.

In other words, the language or text used has structure in accord with the purpose of the language usage or function used. In conversation, speakers and listeners do the

„move‟ in the direction of giving or demanding information and goods and services.

Interaction between addressee and addresser in face to face conversation with in written conversation is different. Face to face conversation always involves body languages and gestures. But in written conversation that can be only realized in move.

Move is defined as the function and the commodity being exchange. When somebody is asking information, the move made by the addresser is termed K2

“secondary knower” whereas another is providing the answer (proving information) the move made by the addressee is K1 “primary knower”. When the interaction between the addresser and addressee is exchange information on goods and services,

12

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA terms of A2 “secondary actor” and A1”primary actor”, the move is structured by A2

^ A1 and further may be followed by A2f ^ A1f.

Example:

K2 Λ K1

K2 A: Did you go to the UFC event?

K1 B: Yes

In giving and demanding information, move A and B are called as K

(Knower). Each of them is K1 as the Primary Knower who gives the information, while K2 as the Secondary Knower who demands the information. Meanwhile, in giving and demanding for goods and services involve an action, so A and B are called as A (Actor) that is A1 as the Primary Actor who gives for goods and services, and A2 is the Secondary Actor who demands for goods and services. The move of

K2, K1, A2, and A1 are formed as a network system. Each move of K1, K2, A1, and

A2 are expressed in the structure of the clause. In the example above, K2 is expressed by interrogative clauses and k1 referred to by the ellipsis. The K1 move serves to provide information to the other person. When making a K1 move, one is termed the `primary knower‟. The primary knower is `someone who already knows the information‟. Being the primary knower frequently during an interaction has been associated with being in a more powerful position in that interaction. The primary knower must make a contribution (that is, it is an obligatory element of the exchange structure) if an exchange is to occur. Thus, the K1 slot is where the primary knowers indicate that they know the information and where they confer the information with a

`kind of a stamp of authority‟. The `secondary knower‟ in an interaction is `someone

13

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA to whom the information is imparted‟. Secondary knowers fill the K2 slot in an exchange. Interactants are in the K2 move either because they are directly demanding information or because they are receiving information. It is the former K2 role that is of interest in this study. Analysis of K2 moves therefore needs to take account of the context in which they occur. The sequence in which K1 moves and K2 moves can occur has been developed into a formula.

According to Martin (1992), the conversational structure in asking or demanding for information is (K2)^K1(K2f)^(K1f), which means that k2f and k1f are optional if the process of exchanging is followed-up like the following example:

K2 Λ K1 Λ K2f Λ K1f

K2 A: When did you go to ?

K1 B: Last month.

K2f A: What were you doing in there?

K1f B: I watched a fight of UFC 229.

In conversation, at least one step is taken by speakers in commodity transactions of information, goods and services. Therefore, conversation is analyzed based on commodities and role of the speaker. The roles of speakers are listed by 1 and 2 both primary and secondary. The person who gives the information has the primary role marked by 1 and the person who asks for something has a secondary role marked by 2. If the conversation continues, K1 and K2 would be K1f and K2f,

A1 and A2 would be A1f and A2f and marked with f (follow up).

14

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA A different step from the different speakers connected with the straight lines as in the example above where the move of K2 and K1 are connected by straight lines. The same steps of the same speaker and the dynamic steps are linked by curved arrow marks. Example below shows that move A2 and A1 are connected by a straight line and between those two steps are the dynamic aspects linked by curved arrow marks. The following example shows that A asks B for information.

(1)

K2 A: What was happening in on Thursday?

K1 B: He stormed with his entourage and appearing to damage a vehicle

containing UFC fighters.

In the conversation above, A is stated as K2 (knower's secondary move) because A is asked for information in hopes of an answer from B, while B as the owner of the information is referred to as K1 (primary knower move). K2 is used because A do not know or have the information. That is why A is classified as K2 and B as k1. But the conversation could continue to be:

(2)

K2 A: What was happening in Barclays Center on Thursday?

K1 B: He stormed with his entourage and appearing to damage a vehicle

containing UFC fighters.

K2f A: Who is he?

K1f B: He is Conor McGregor a former UFC champion.

15

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Follow-up A to answer B is shown with K2f (follow-up knower's secondary) and follow-up B is called K1f (follow-up primary knower). Which means K2f and

K1f would appear, and would not. In other situations, A already knows the answer, but it is as if asking B. It happens often in the context of class conversations when teachers test the students' abilities orally.

(3)

DK1 A: What is the capital of Australia?

K2 B: Sydney.

K1 A: No, It is Canberra.

The structure of the conversation above is DK1^K2^K1. A is called DK1

(primary delayed knower), indicating that people who ask questions actually know the answer. It is applied for the interactions with the purpose of giving or demanding goods and services, the structure can be formed in such terms as the difference between demanding and giving the information.

(4)

DA1 A: Can I get you a drink?

A2 B: Yes, please. Can I get a cup of tea?

A1 A: Here you are.

A2f B: Thank You.

A1f A: My pleasure.

16

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The structure of conversation would be understood as

DA1^A2^A1^(A2f)^(A1f). DA1 presents the person who delayed goods and services.

Delay means that to do something later than is planned or expected or to do something slowly. That is why a person should be asking first before do something.

A2 is a person who requests or demands goods and services, A1 is a person who provides goods and services, the A2f is the follow-up steps of the person who asks goods and services, and the A1f is the follow-up steps of the person who provides or gives goods and services.

2.1.4 Dynamic Aspects of Conversation

The examples above are described only for the conditions of a conversation that are common without some dynamics occurring in it. The kinds of the conversations can be hypothetical rather than real. Martin (1992) notes that interactions do not always form in pairs, this means that when a speaker demands information or goods and services is presented, an answer or action is directly given by the person who already knows the information. The obstacles are classified into the dynamic aspects of conversation that is challenge, clarification, and confirmation.

The following examples will illustrate clearly:

(1) Challenge

A2 A: When did you send the letter?

CH B: It‟s none of your business.

RCH A: What? It‟s my responsibility.

K1 B: Last week.

17

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K2f A: Behave yourself.

Challenge is used when the listener reject to answer or response the question of the speaker. In the conversation above, the proposition presented by A2 is rejected by listener in challenge and it is accompanied by the justifications of his refusal.

Challenge is realized as CH in dynamic of conversation and RCH is for Response to

Challenge.

(2) Clarification

A2 A: Did you go to the dinner party?

CL B: Where?

RCL A: To the dinner party.

A1 B: Yes.

Clarification is an action in order to get explanation on a particular problem and to explain things more clearly and intelligible that is useful to relieve the ambiguity of things. Generally clarification is a way or a gesture to explain the truth, from slightly misinformed information and already in circulation. It is more often used by people who are generally in the public eye, such as officials, artists, successful businessmen, and others. The term clarification itself if referring to an

Indonesian dictionary means explanation. Clarification action involves a minimum of two people, in which the first person is a source of information and the second person is the one who wants actual information so that the information he knows becomes clear. The purpose of clarification is so that understanding of a problem can

18

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA be straightened out so that we receive not only information from one source but also from a different source.

Clarification occurs when the listener do not understand or hear about what the speaker said. In the conversation above, A repeats the statement that he has said before as the answer of the question to make clear and understand to the listener.

Therefore, B is considered as Clarification (CL), while the response of A is called as

Response to Clarification (RCL).

(3) Confirmation

A2 A: I would like to have a bread.

CF B: You want the toasted bread, do you?

RCF A: Definitely.

A1 B: Here it is.

Confirmation is a response which shows that information is received and understood. It is also a proof that shows the information is true or not. Based on the conversation above, B as the listener is considered as confirmation, because B has delayed the action before he responses to serve what A already want to. B wants to confirm the information correctly. The answer of B question is realized as RCF

(Response to Confirmation.

Dynamic moves are used to facilitate the negotiation of meaning, either through the use of active means (such as clarification), or by giving feedback that the information has been conveyed successfully (by confirmation). Dynamic moves are used when the information exchange process is challenged or when interactants

19

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA misunderstand each other. By examining exchange structure at the level of discourse it is possible to measure how interactants are using language during the information exchange process. The choices that are made depend on the context of situation, and the context of culture surrounding that interaction. The language choices made can be interpreted in the light of interpersonal factors such as social distance and perceived authority. The dynamics of conversation are aimed at ascertaining what was heard before. Martin further stated that a conversation structure of both giving and demanding information and, goods and services could be formulated as follows.

Provide and request information: (DK1)^(K2)^K1(K2f) and from this formula would be reduced to the following conversational structures.

1. K1

2. K1^K2f

3. K1^K2f^^K1f

4. K2^K1

5. K2^K1^K2f

6. K2^K1^K2f^K1f

7. DK1^K2^K1

8. DK1^K2^K1^K2f

9. DK1^K2^K1^K2f^K1f

To give and demand for goods or services: (DA1)^(A2)^A1^(A2f)^(A1f), and from this formula would be reduced to the following conversational structure:

20

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1. A1

2. A1^A2f

3. A1^A2f^^A1f

4. A2^A1

5. A2^A1^A2f

6. A2^A1^A2f^A1f

7. DA1^A2^A1

8. DA1^A2^A1^A2f

9. DA1^A2^A1^A2f^A1f

But Martin added that not being covered likely development of the formula because it is a structure based on popular conversation in society and social context that is one of the causes of the development. The structure of the conversation is based on the choice of speakers and listener in exchange for experiences. When a speaker begins a conversation, the speaker makes the choice either to ask for information (K2) or to give information (K2) or to demand for goods and services

(A2) and to give goods and services (A1). Henceforth, if that response occurs, it would evolve to be K1f and K2f in asking or requesting the information, and it would be called A2f and A1f in requesting and performing services. The choices that speakers and listeners make in exchanging experiences form a conversation networking system.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2.2 Previous Studies

The writer presents some previous findings, which are related or relevant with this study, as follows:

Siti Aisah Ginting (2010) analyzed on “Conversational System and Structure of Karonese Language”. The research is aimed at discovering the conversational system and structures of the Karonese language. This study is based on a descriptive qualitative research that applies ethno-methodological approach. The data are utterances produced in typical contexts of situation covering weddings and other ordinary events, and uncommon contexts of situation such as moving in to a new house and mourning. The data were collected through participant observation. The instrument was the researcher herself equipped with observation sheets, handy cams, recorders, and questions for interview. The data obtained were analyzed into two ways: syntagmatically and paradigmatically.

Susanto (2011) did a research on “Culture and Language Stratification: A

Systemic Functional Study on the Conversational Structure in Bahasa Indonesia”.

This research investigates a spontaneous dialogue in Bahasa Indonesia. Focusing on its conversational structure in which the exchanges are realized by Initiate/Respond moves and the exchanging commodity. This research is presented in Sytemic

Functional Linguistics framework with the concept of stratification.

Herawati Br Bukit (2016) focused on “Exchange Structures between Sellers and Buyers at the Deli Old Town Traditional Market”. This research is aimed to derive exchanges structure occurring between sellers and buyers in the market, investigate how exchanges are realized linguistically and reason for the use of exchanges structures between sellers and buyers at Deli Old Town Traditional

Market. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The

22

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA data was the clauses produced by the sellers and the buyers. The data was analyzed based on Martin theory.

Léonard A. Koussouhon and Ashani M. Dossoumou (2015) focused his research on “Analyzing Interpersonal Metafunction through Mood and Modality in

Kaine Agary‟s Yellow-Yellow from Critical Discourse and Womanist Perspective”.

The aim of this research is to analyze mood, epistemic and deontic modality patterns in an extract culled from Yellow-Yellow by one of the Nigerian new millennium female writer, Kaine Agary. The findings data revealed by the interpersonal meaning analysis are discussed against the backdrop of critical discourse analysis and womanist theory.

Fikri Z, Dewi Ni, Suarnajaya W (2014) discussed “Mood Structure Analysis of Teacher Talk in EFL Classroom: A Discourse Study Based on Systemic

Functional Linguistic Theory”. This research aims at analyzing male and female teacher talk in EFL classroom. The analysis was meant to find out the realization of

Mood in teacher talk, the realization of Mood in teacher‟s role, and the Mood realization difference between male and female teacher talk in EFL classroom. It was designed as a descriptive-qualitative research, and discourse analysis. Data were collected through observations i.e. recording and note-taking as the main source. The data were analyzed using Mood structure analysis suggested by M.A.K Halliday. To gain deeper analysis, the data were triangulated by interviewing the participants, two senior English teacher i.e. male and female teacher, and one linguist.

METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1. Research Design

The research design is a design/process which is needed in planning and doing a research. This study uses qualitative and descriptive research method.

According to Miles and Huberman (2014: 1), Qualitative data are a source of well- grounded, rich descriptions and explanations of human processes. With qualitative data, one can preserve chronological flow, see which events led to which consequences, and derive fruitful explanations. Qualitative research is conducted through intense and prolonged contact with participants in a naturalistic setting to investigate the everyday and/or exceptional lives of individuals, groups, societies, and organizations (Miles and Huberman, 2014: 5). Qualitative research methods are used to collect and analyze data that cannot be represented by numbers. “Descriptive method is the method whose the purpose of which is to describe systematically, factually and accurately” (Isaac and Michael, 1995). Descriptive research is used in the literal sense of describing situation and events. By using descriptive method, the data are analyzed by describing the categories of discourse structure pattern and identifying the structure of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov based on

Halliday and Martin theory.

3.2 Data and Source of Data

The data are clauses that are found in the conversation. The source of data in this study is the script of conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov at ESPN

(Entertainment and Sports Programming Network) program and the press conference.

25

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The researcher takes data sources from YouTube sites: https://youtu.be/qh5C6bPdHl4 and https://youtu.be/hdYVvKub2oc . Data collected is a record of both sound and words.

3.3 Data Collection Method

According to Selinger and Shohamy (1989) in Second Language Research

Methods, there are five methods used to collect data: Tests, Surveys and questionnaires, Self-reports and interviews, Observations, and Documentation.

Test is the activities might be specially constructed to elicit target data such as learner‟s ability to negotiate directions in a dyadic setting, for example, a writing assignment or communicative activity, which are normally carried out in a language class and which later become a data source for the research. The items on surveys and questionnaires may consists of questions or other stimuli that either limit response to a very narrow range of possibilities or allow more latitude in response.

Surveys may be conducted in the presence of the researcher, or by mail, or telephone.

This method is useful for collecting data from large groups of subjects. Self-reports and interviews, this kind of data collection are data the interview used with increasing frequency in second language research, especially where the immediate goal of the research is to describe the state of the learner during particular language learning activities. In descriptive research, observations usually focus more on the collection of data specified in advance before the research begins. It begins with a deductive premise about what to look for in the observation. For the purpose of the observation, much thought is given to the way the observations will be conducted, to the controls needed to ensure the reliability of the observations, and to the

26

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA development of the observation instrument which will focus on the specific kind of data under investigation.

According to Babbie (2010), document analysis is “the study of recorded human communications, such as books, websites, paintings, and laws”. Document analysis is a method of data collection which involves analysis of content from written documents in order to make certain deductions based on the study parameters.

This method is mainly used in qualitative research as a method of qualitative analysis.

In this study, the researcher uses documentation type of method. The techniques of data collection are:

1. Watching and listening the conversation on video YouTube.

2. Downloading the video from the internet.

3. Transcribing the conversation into a script by using application of Speak and

Translate.

4. Inserting the collected data into paper research to be analyzed.

5. Analyzing the data. This study is analyzed using an inductive analytical

approach. The data gained from observation of spoken language transcript is

analyzed using the dynamics of conversation such as clarification, challenge,

and confirmation. Those are under the theory from Halliday and Martin.

3.5 Data Analysis Technique

In analyzing the data, the researcher was used a descriptive analysis technique to get the result and the conclusion. The technique of analyzing is focused on four characteristics, according to Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014).

27

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

Figure 3.1 four characteristics in technique of data analysis

1. Data Collection means this study begins with the steps of collecting data as

mentioned on technique then analyze the problem. In this study, data

collection is obtained from transcript of conversation on video YouTube.

2. Data Condensation refers to the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying,

abstracting, and transforming the data that appear in the full corpus (body) of

written-up field notes, interview transcripts, documents, and other empirical

materials (Miles and et al, 2014:31). In this study, the data was done by the

process selecting through downloading the video of Khabib Nurmagomedov.

a. Selecting the conversation transcript that has been transcribed.

b. Focusing on the dialogue into utterances and moves and simplifying them

into numbers.

c. Transforming the data into the exchange structures.

d. Abstracting the structure in the conversation transcript.

28

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3. Data display is an organized, compressed assembly of information that allows

conclusion drawing and action (Miles and et al, 2014:31). To draw

conclusions from the mass of data, Miles, Huberman and Saldana suggest that

a good display of data, in the form of tables, charts, networks, and other

graphical formats are essential. In this study, the data has been displayed in

the form of chart.

4. Conclusion drawing and verification is data collection, the qualitative analyst

interprets what things mean by noting patterns, explanations, causal flows,

and propositions (Miles and et al, 2014:32). The analysis should allow begin

to develop conclusions regarding the study. The data has been identified from

the interpersonal function and used the commodity exchange to transforming

the data into the exchange structures.

ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS

4.1 Analysis

This chapter is concerned with the result of the data analysis cover the conversational structure used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at

ESPN program and the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor

McGregor at the press conference by using the theory of systemic functional linguistics from Halliday and the structure of conversation by Martin. Firstly, the data has been analyzed based on the structure of conversation realized in K1, K2, A1, and A2. Secondly, the data analysis has been concerned by the dynamic aspects of conversation. It has been identified as challenge, clarification, and confirmation.

The data collected was classified through the chart, in order that the readers get clear information concerning the structure and the dynamic aspects of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN program and the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor at the press conference.

In the conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov at the ESPN program and the press conference, the researcher explains the analysis by separating it from each utterances in form of clauses into several data and identifying it into exchange structure and dynamic aspects of conversation. Then the researcher reviews the final result of the formula in findings.

30

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The structure of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett

Okamoto at ESPN program

K2 Brett: Look up being 4 years in a people like myself has been asking, are you going to fight Conor? Now if I‟d is days away, how does it feel to have a days away?

K1 Khabib: Yes. This is very interesting fight for people, for fans, you know. I never feel like this before, never. This is my best trip ever and I think I‟m lucky.

CF Brett: The bus incident and a front, you‟ve been asking a lot of question about it, he‟s been asking a lot of question. Do you care about the bus incident now, days before the fight?

RCF Khabib: No, I don‟t care about this.

CL Brett: What do you want to say inside the cage?

RCL Khabib: I‟m gonna talk in a little bit different, and you know, make him humble, teach him, sometimes slap him, make him tired inside the cage.

CL Brett: Why do you gonna say to make him humble?

RCL Khabib: I‟m gonna ask him, “hey! Where is your bus, now?, where is your other guys?, what happen now?, where is everything?, bring everybody here!”.

CF Brett: When you guys were at the press conference, Connor said that if you had gotten off that bus you would be dead and you would be in jail. What do you think would have happened if you would have gotten?

RCF Khabib: Nobody can say, who is gonna die, who is gonna know, this is not his option, this is God option, nobody can say “hey, you gonna die” or something like this.

K2 Brett: If you have a chance to finish him in the first minute of the fight, do you wanna do it?

K1 Khabib: We‟ll see. Maybe, maybe not but honestly, it is hard question. Of course, I‟m gonna try to smash him if I have chance.

CF Brett: So he said that his brand of whiskey will be on the canvas and UFC 229. Do you have any thoughts on that?

RCF Khabib: I don‟t know this. Because I don‟t understand his language, you know.

31

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K2 Brett: So you don‟t care about this?

K1 Khabib: I don‟t care about this, of course.

DK1 Brett: He has talked about your brother, he‟s called your father as a coward. He has made fun of where you live, are you going into this fight angry at all?

K1 Khabib: A little bit. But I can control my emotion. He can say whatever he wants.

K2f Brett: When you are around him, do you feel like he‟s putting on an actor or do you think that is where do you see is what you get from him?

K1f Khabib: At press conference, he looks like a drunk guy, it‟s crazy, it‟s very interesting. I‟m going to be close all the time. We will see.

K2 Brett: So UFC just held it is first event in earlier this month. Do you think that‟s open the door for you to fight in Russia at some point in your career?

K1 Khabib: This is my big dream, I‟m gonna fight in Russia. It is very big dream, we‟ll see.

A2 Brett: What just happened in downstairs, can you explain what that was?

A1 Khabib: There are a lot of people, everybody come for support me. I‟m very appreciated.

1. Exchange of information

Data (1)

K2 Brett: Look up being 4 years in a people like myself has been asking, are you going to fight Conor? Now if I‟d is days away, how does it feel to have a days away?

K1 Khabib: Yes. This is very interesting fight for people, for fans, you know. I never feel like this before, never. This is my best trip ever and I think I‟m lucky.

32

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Data (6)

K2 Brett: If you have a chance to finish him in the first minute of the fight, do you wanna do it?

K1 Khabib: We‟ll see. Maybe, maybe not but honestly, it is hard question. Of course, I‟m gonna try to smash him if I have chance.

Data (8)

K2 Brett: So you don‟t care about this?

K1 Khabib: I don‟t care about this, of course.

Data (9)

DK1 Brett: He has talked about your brother, he‟s called your father as a coward. He has made fun of where you live, are you going into this fight angry at all?

K1 Khabib: A little bit. But I can control my emotion. He can say whatever he wants.

K2f Brett: When you are around him, do you feel like he‟s putting on an actor or do you think that is where do you see is what you get from him?

K1f Khabib: At press conference, he looks like a drunk guy, it‟s crazy, it‟s very interesting. I‟m going to be close all the time. We will see.

Data (10)

K2 Brett: So UFC just held it is first event in Russia earlier this month. Do you think that‟s open the door for you to fight in Russia at some point in your career?

K1 Khabib: This is my big dream, I‟m gonna fight in Russia, It is very big dream, we‟ll see.

In the data number (1), (6), (8), (10) the structure of conversation are exchange of information. Brett as an interviewer asking for information to Khabib as

33

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA the owner of information. Before conducting an interview, usually the interviewer has some information about the interviewee. Since this is an interview on a reality show, the interviewer has already figured out what question he would ask to the interviewee. Because this conversation is the structured conversation, means that between the interviewer and the interviewee have already known about the topic of the interview, but the interviewee did not know about the question that has been asking by the interviewer. Typically, in asking for information the speaker has a question he would ask to listener in exchange for information. In data (1), Brett asked instead of just one question, but double one.

In an interview conversation, usually a speaker and a listener are given the duration of time so the question asked by Brett does not beat around the head with just a question, but with a double question at once, while, Khabib responded with extensive information and lengthy statements. It is different from conversations put on in everyday activities. The process of exchange is a natural process, so a long conversation structure is formed because it is not time-bound. As a process in exchange for information according to Martin (1992), in the data (1) the conversation structure corresponds to the formula stated by Martin.

In the data (9) begins to DK1 and there is the symbol f that realized as follow-up, means that the process of exchanging is followed-up or be continued. It is common in a conversation in an interview, the conversation would continue and automatically the information-exchange process would also continue. But in a conversation between Brett Okamoto and Khabib Nurmagomedov, every question had a different topic, Brett asked a different question every time he asked Khabib the question, and not all the questions he asked, he has already knew the information. In

34

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA previous theory, it has been explained that the DK1 is for people who actually know the answer. In the data (9) above, Brett stated a statement he had previously known, and then he asked "are you going into this fight angry at all?" which he should already know the answer to. It is because Khabib answered in exactly what happened and the truth. When someone refers to our parents in demeaning words or in bad words, we as children are angry to hear them, even if they are only slightly angry, but automatically we feel bad too. If someone asks us if we are angry after hearing someone say bad things to our parents, we would answer in a sentence, yes I am angry, or yes I am a bit angry.

The illustration above indicates DK1 because the speaker had asked the answer he already knew, but he asked in order to ask for more concrete information by asking directly and knowing the answer from the corresponding source of information from the owner of the information.

When a conversation continues with one topic of conversation, the process of exchanging was also become on one formula, and when the process happened it would be marked by f (follow-up). In the data (9) above Brett linked the previous question to further question mean they were either still connected or still in one topic.

That is why K2 and K1 would be K2f and K1f.

2. Exchange of Goods and Services

Data (11)

A2 Brett: What just happened in downstairs, can you explain what that was?

A1 Khabib: There are a lot of people, everybody come for support me. I‟m very appreciated.

35

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In the data (11) above is demanding goods and services. As it has been described in the structure in the previous of the conversation theory, there are two of exchange structure that is exchange information realized by K (Knower) and exchange of goods and services realized by A (Actor) because it is involved an action. But in the case of the conversation above, there was no action of a physical verb, but Brett as the speaker asked the question using "can" of verb auxiliary. In conversation, we not only giving or demanding for information, but also engage in goods and services. When speaker asks to the listener, typically the speaker asks permission to be briefed on questions being asked. In this regard, “can” is functioned as Brett's request for permission to ask Khabib to explain his question, in this case

Brett is demanding of goods and services.

Dinamyc Aspects of Conversation

1. Confirmation

Data (2)

CF Brett: The bus incident and a front, you‟ve been asking a lot of question about it, he‟s been asking a lot of question. Do you care about the bus incident now, days before the fight?

RCF Khabib: No, I don‟t care about this.

Data (5)

CF Brett: When you guys were at the press conference, Connor said that if you had gotten off that bus you would be dead and you would be in jail. What do you think would have happened if you would have gotten?

RCF Khabib: Nobody can say, who is gonna die, who is gonna know, this is not his option, this is God option, nobody can say “hey, you gonna die” or something like this.

36

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Data (7)

CF Brett: So he said that his brand of whiskey will be on the canvas and UFC 229. Do you have any thoughts on that?

RCF Khabib: I don‟t know this. Because I don‟t understand his language, you know.

Confirmation is a response which shows that information is received and understood. According to Webster Dictionary, confirmation is the act of giving official approval to something or someone. This means that confirmation is an act of asking or granting approval or emphasizing whether the information received is true or not. Furthermore, the meaning of the confirmation is an admissible proof of the information the speaker gets.

In the conversation, Brett stated the statement first, before asking the question to Khabib. This was done as the information has gotten from Brett or his information about Khabib. He wants to find out if the related information is true or false. Khabib as the one who had the information responded in response to questions from Brett.

The response given by Khabib as the listener is called as Response to Confirmation.

Usually in a conversation, if the speaker asked to confirm a statement, the listener would respond with a modest answer but would be able to respond to the speaker's question. In the structure of the conversation, the short answer conveyed by the speaker has been called the ellipsis. But, in this case, Khabib was answering more questions to Brett's question, which called elaboration of the statement. This is needed in an interview as a concrete explanation, because the purpose of an interview conversation is to get as much information as possible.

37

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 2. Clarification

Data (3)

CL Brett: What do you want to say inside the cage?

RCL Khabib: I‟m gonna talk in a little bit different, and you know, make him humble, teach him, sometimes slap him, make him tired inside the cage.

Data (4)

CL Brett: Why do you gonna say to make him humble?

RCL Khabib: I‟m gonna ask him, “hey! Where is your bus, now?, where is your other guys?, what happen now?, where is everything?, bring everybody here!”.

Clarification occurs when the listener do not understand or hear about what the speaker said. In a conversation, sometimes it is often happened when we are speaking or asking about something, the listener neither hearing or incomprehension about the information he hears or receives, therefore it requires repetition of a question or a statement so that the listener can repeat the statement he has said before or explain in detail the related information.

In the case of data 3 above, Brett asked him about the information Khabib had mentioned earlier. Khabib had earlier stated "I'm gonna explain everything inside the cage", Brett later asked directly because he was unfamiliar with that statement. In this case, Brett needed a more accurate explanation so that he could relate to the information. The response given by Khabib in answer to Brett question called as

Response to Clarification.

The object of the clarification in the dynamic parts of conversation is to give or deman for less clear information. In this case less understood is by the speaker, so

38

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA a restatement is needed and detailed so that the listener could understand the information given or the information he asks for.

3. Challenge

Challenge is the process when the listener refused to provide information to the speaker. This rejection can be in form of polite, or rejection by rude words. In asking or giving information, there is a virtue of what we feel does not want to accept or gives what is offered to us from others. In the conversation, we might reject another person‟s help or gift if we feel that we are not in need of it, specifically if still an offer. However, in the dynamic of conversation, the rejection is more refer to repudiation in polite. The connection is called challenge. In conversation between

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto the challenge are not found.

The structure of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor

McGregor at the press conference

K1 Khabib : What‟s up guys, 3 p.m. this conference is beginning. I am not waiting for nobody let us go if you have a question I‟m here.

DK1 Dana : Alright, alright what‟s up everybody? Thank you coming out today, supposed to be a video played and all kinds of stuff that went on before this but uh Conor is not here yet and Khabib said he‟s not going to wait, he wants to start the press conference without. Does anybody the media have a question for Khabib? I don‟t let my crew is ready let‟s get somebody down here you guys.

K2 Journalist : Okay, well Khabib let‟s ask how do you feel about this I mean you are here at a press conference by yourself giving that deal with what the emotion is like for you happy to be here by yourself in Conor?

39

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K1 Khabib : Hey, I no need to wait for nobody. This is 3:00 p.m. friends is here, media is here, everybody is here, Dana is a little bit very late, it‟s okay about 3:00 p.m. I beginning if you guys have a questions let‟s go.

K2f Journalist : This is a huge opportunity for you mastered by biggest fight of all time in UFC history, let me ask you what do you think this does for your career what comes next, what do you see and we saw Conor get two belts we‟ve seen people go away classes. What do you do after the biggest fight in UFC history?

K1f Khabib : Honestly, I don‟t know because I am not underestimate this guy you know, I‟m preparing my rate is good, tonight I have to make weight and it‟s like after tomorrow I‟m focused on after tomorrow, we will see we‟re going to talk after this fight.

K2f Journalist: Dana, what‟s your emotion right now the biggest star of the sport all these people wanting to see Conor and he‟s not here. What‟s your think about that?

K1f Dana : Listen, that I‟m excited I can‟t wait for the weight-ins I can‟t wait for the fight and Conor is in the car right now he‟s on his way here so he‟ll be here in a few minutes but yeah I‟m excited so far, so good, everything‟s been perfect and I‟m ready for the fight now.

CF Journalist : It dated just lastly for you I mean between the main and the co-main huge fights at lightweight item in the future the vision look exciting but we still got that Dustin and they fight out there that we‟re wondering what‟s on the back because that would seem to factor into a future title shot as well. Can you give us any updates is that fight happening is it yeah the main event?

RCF Dana : What we‟re still working on and yeah as far as I know right now that fights out yeah.

K2 Journalist : Conor always tries different things to get inside your head. Are you surprised that he‟s not here or were you expecting something like this?

K1 Khabib : About if you‟re talking about we go inside my head, we‟re gonna say on Saturday night, we‟re gonna say this.

K2f Journalist : Are you surprised that he‟s not here or were you expecting this?

K1f Khabib : No, I don‟t think about him you know, I have lose weight, I have a schedule, 3:00 p.m. which company has to begin because I have schedule I have to make weight I have to worry about myself, why I have

40

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA to think about him, he comes or not if somebody late this is not my problem.

CF Journalist : Brooklyn happens six months ago almost exactly six months ago. Are you angry about what happened then?

RCF Khabib : Little bit, if I say no this is not true, a little bit of course, I am angry little bit emotional but my job when I go to the cage I have to control my emotional I have to stay relaxed but keep going and more this guy.

K2 Journalist: is the anger help you?

K1 Khabib : Sometime this happened, sometime this is helped you, sometime is not, but most important stay relaxed when you go to the cage this is most important.

K2f Journalist : Back in New York a few weeks ago Conor said a few things about your teammates your family your fellow countrymen, is it gonna safe going to Russia these days?

CL Khabib : Sorry, sorry, once again?

RCL Journalist : Conor said that your fellow countrymen and your family, is it safe going to Russia these days?

K1 Khabib : He can say whatever he want, when alcoholic someone drunk I talk, nobody cares about him, we just live in Milan ignore him and when we go to the cage we will see, we‟re gonna talk.

K2 Journalist : Just lastly, the wake up we know it‟s always difficult, how much have you got left it up to come tonight and have a tree weighting right now away?

K1f Khabib : Because it‟s all always is hard, Thursday this is my weight kind of day and you know, that‟s why I don‟t want be wait for someone 30 minutes, 40 minutes, that‟s why 3:00 p.m. press conference, after press conference I have to go home and focus on my World Cup.

K2f Journalist : Khabib, question for you, win or lose will you shake Conor‟s hand after the fight?

DK1 Khabib : I‟m gonna shake his hand after fight? No, no way.

K2 Journalist : Why not?

K1 Khabib : Because…

41

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K2f Journalist : I know you‟re on a strict schedule, how much time are you gonna wait for Conor to get here, do you have to leave after a set period of time?

K1f Khabib : I don‟t know I had not gone I go say maybe two minute maybe 20 minutes. I‟m gonna let you know guys before I leave.

CF Journalist : Tommy Ferguson was at the media day today and he brought his belt, he believes he‟s the real champion, what‟s your response to that?

RCF Khabib : You have to believe, when you fight like this high-level fight you know, you have to believe champ, nobody can beat “oh it is okay, I am okay about this”, but I am not okay about when Dana says where Conor belt is. I am not okay about this because Dana already knows where Conor‟s belt is. He have to know but you know he brings within belts like believe his self, it‟s okay I‟m okay about this and tell this guy, hey he lose his belt he lose his mind two years he didn‟t fight in UFC.

CF Journalist : Last question, I know there‟s some rumors around a 165 belt being introduced one day, would you be interested in fighting for a 165- pound title?

RCF Khabib : I like this favor I like this wait, why not 165, 175, or 170 like I think in future you‟ll see it‟s gonna do these weights like right know I don‟t know and I don‟t think about this way to you know because after tomorrow I have biggest fight in UFC history and I will focus on this fight.

K2 Journalist : When you sit down and visualize Saturday night, what‟s your vision happening in the Octagon?

K1 Khabib : How I see fight is going, I think like beginning on the kill shot I have to be careful with him because we have good I mean good you know, but my resting at my pressure, my resting at my pressure you have to kill me first you know, Insya Allah I‟m gonna stop this game, gonna finish this guy, this is my plan.

CF Journalist : Khabib over here, to your right. Dana, um… given what‟s happened in the build up to this and in New York and the way you‟ve been with each other the discussion of Islam the whiskey last week, has this become bigger than just a fight in a steel cage on a Saturday night?

RCF Khabib : Honestly, this is for me this is more than defend my title, for me is for them fight for the title more than event you now, for me it‟s personal. Honestly, it is personal and of course this is because fight in

42

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA UFC history and we cannot this broke this record numbers already talked about this and you know. For me it‟s personal.

K2 Journalist : Finally, do you believe that the way Conor McGregor behaves not turning up on time disrespects you as the champion and the sport?

K1 Khabib : I don‟t care about this you know, most important this is believe myself, this is most important, I don‟t care about someone believe me or not.

CF Journalist : Khabib, you said before that you‟re gonna give him 25 minutes in jail inside the Octagon though he still feel the same way is the fight going to decision?

RCF Khabib : Maybe decision, maybe I‟m gonna finish him you know, but all the time when he tired didn‟t he give up, this is all the time like before bites you, he talks like “I‟m ready for this” when you fight with Diaz, when you fight with Mayweather, but when he‟s tired, he gives up all the time.

K2 Journalist : How do you think your level of hunger in this fight compares to Conor‟s?

CL Dana : Go said again honey, I‟m sorry I was lose my pay attention.

RCL Journalist : How do think your level of hunger compares to Conor‟s?

K1 Khabib : Sorry about this, because I don‟t hear. Of course I believe myself. How come here if I don‟t believe myself, I am UFC champion undefeated undisputed if you don‟t believe yourself high we can take this and I believe God first and after I believe myself. You know I‟m here because God helped me, that why I‟m here.

K2 Journalist : Do you think you want this more than Conor does know that Conor has money and think who‟s hungrier?

K1f Khabib : We‟ll see. Saturday night I‟m gonna show this. All question is gonna be answered. Please wait two more days.

CF Journalist : and Dana for you, you had expressed in the past concern that McGregor may not be hungry because he made all that money and has all that fame now that this fight has been made. What do you think about his hunger?

CL Dana : that McGregor might what?

43

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA RCL Journalist : You don‟t know if he would take another fight, because he made a ton of money and already accomplished what he had wanted. What do you think about his level of hunger?

K1 Dana : yeah, I know basically what I said is when a guy makes a hundred million dollars you don‟t know if he‟s ever gonna fight again you know Conor made a lot of money and he went and I‟m sure he had a lot fun and did what he wanted to do and you know there‟s no matter how much money you make you can only sit home for so long and you start to go crazy and this you can tell this guy‟s passionate about fighting he loves it he loves breaking records and he obviously loves making money, so he‟s back.

CF Journalist : just quickly Khabib, what do you think of the crowd here because they‟ve been very loud leading it to this fight, does it affect you at all dealing with the fuse, has it affected you mentally and like surprise there‟s no more Russian fancy?

RCF Khabib : I love these fans you know, because without this fan this event is not happen you know and thank you so much guys, they come here buy tickets I‟ll plan, they come you know without friends is nothing happened, thank you so much, and these guys give me maturation. It is okay, they have to support this guy, I am okay about this, thank you guys. Hey guys, 15 minutes I am here, this guy didn‟t come, this is big disrespect and thank you so much, tomorrow 9 a.m. I am gonna show you my wait and see you tomorrow guys, have a good night.

K1 Dana : All right, this is awkward.

K2 Journalist : Dana, we got a question for you. In the center in the back straight ahead, can you give an update you said yesterday the pay-per- view was tracking, can you give us any updates has it changed since yesterday?

K1f Dana : It is crazy that the track all the numbers are tracking higher than Mayweather and McGregor and you know this is a fight is the global quiet the whole world literally will be watching this fight so I don‟t know man, it‟s huge, its massive I don‟t want to come out and say we‟re gonna do Mayweather, McGregor numbers but we could possibly do Mayweather McGregor numbers.

K2f Journalist : How does this Khabib leaving us are getting you know stared out today, how does this affect the final day is building up to this way?

44

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K1f Dana : It doesn‟t you know, obviously this wasn‟t the plan today you know, this should happens.

K2f Journalist : didn‟t show up on time of Conor are you upset with Khabib?

K1f Dana : They‟ll both be at the weight-ins tomorrowon time and we‟ll get the stare down the bar when it matters the fights actually gonna to be honest with you I prefer that anyway tomorrow we saw the stare down at New York. I want to see the stare down tomorrow that‟s the one I‟m interests in.

CL Journalist : Just going back to what you said earlier about 165, why are you so adamantly against?

RCL Dana : Never been talked about it is fake news.

K2 Journalist : So just the concept of it, why do you not like it?

K1 Dana : I don‟t like anything about it. It depletes the 55-pound division and all the guys that can‟t win titles at 55 or 70 are gonna run a 65 and try to win a diamond.

CL Journalist : The press conference always a good way to I guess people to satiate your appetite for a fight like this. Are you disappointed with how things have turned out here?

RCL Dana : Listen, this should happens like I said, we have press conference in New York this one was you know what we planned not how we planned it to go down but at the end of the day you know like I always say about McGregor with the mental warfare game to go on and all the things that have said there‟s a counter to it right there I‟m here on time I could I spoke to the media I‟m out of here so I‟m not gonna play your game and wait for you. This is all part of that goes on leading up to the fight.

K2 Journalist : This is a contractual obligation for Conor to be here we‟ve seen what happened in the past that he has not showing up to a conference is there any consequences for anything of this nature?

CL Dana : is what? Conferences?

RCL Journalist : Dana, I see you said from the beginning when you guys came in that this is a global sport you can go anywhere in the world and people love to watch two guys fight. Is this literally what you had in mind a guy from Ireland and a guy from the biggest fight in UFC history I mean this is what you planned for all along and what you

45

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA said it was coming. How does it feel now that you‟re here with a fight like this?

CL Dana : Yeah, I‟ve talked to many people about this week you know as you continue to grow the sport and you know go into all these different countries and find new talent and as technology continues to get better with OOT and literally the world can tune in and watch a fight together so yeah we‟re there this is just the beginning of getting to that place that I used to talk about.

RCL Journalist : and you‟re a big boxing guy, do you think now Conor is the biggest cell in combat sports is he the biggest star with this fight coming in coming back and what he did against Mayweather. Mayweather it had a couple fights around 500,000 buys and then he fights Pacquiao and Conor, but is it a two state Conors the biggest star in the world and combat sportnet 100 cent?

CL Dana : If you look at what he‟s done think about this when you talk about Floyd Mayweahter‟s numbers, we‟ve made whether it‟s been fighting for 20 years, Conor McGregor has not been around for 20 years and he‟s been pulling big numbers you know, pretty much right after he got in here so the answer that is absolutely.

RCL Journalist : Dana, I want to ask you, if you have any updates about Joe Jones any opponents in mind anything you can tell us and also what do you think about the east side of deal didn‟t know?

CL Dana : John Jones isn‟t in shape yet, John Jones hasn‟t trained as he got ready, so he‟s got to get into camp before we can even think about when he‟s gonna fight I‟d like to see him fight at the end of the year at the beginning of next year but we‟ll see, and what was the last question?

RCL Journalist : What do you think about you said a deal that he had hold because a change thing?

CL Dana : What do I think about these sorts of thing?

RCL Journalist : You said that they got a deal 33 I guess they made a deal you started made a deal with him right then if he tales information?

CH Dana : Sorry, sorry I don‟t understand one words you‟re saying right now, you say the only thing I ever heard.

K2 Journalist : So he got he made a deal with him right they put it like a be supposed to be snitching giving information about other fighters?

CL Dana : Talking about John Jones?

46

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA RCL Journalist : Yes.

DK1 Dana : Yeah and what would happen with John Jones? Yeah you‟d have to ask Jeff Novitzky about that I don‟t know enough about it to honestly give you an educated answer on that. I don‟t give a shit about drug testing anymore a lot of that business you saw it does it, that was the biggest nightmare of my life.

K2 Journalist : I know you were on an chat and you‟d mentioned that like you would talk to Nate Diaz about that headlining event is that is there any update on that?

CL Dana : Don‟t I said I would talk to him about it?

RCL Journalist : well you said…

K1 Dana : Somebody asked me on there that fight should be five rounds.

K2 Journalist : Do they agree to that though?

K1f Dana : No, dude that‟s the last thing I‟m thinking about right now, not even it shows out there right now I‟m here.

K2f Journalist : Dana I‟d wanted to ask to Khabib this before he left but do you have any insight into why his father was denied a visa again?

CL Dana : Did I have any insight into what?

RCL Journalist : Do you have any information about why his father was denied a visa again?

DK1 Dana : Why? Who‟s? Khabib? His father didn‟t get a visa, I don‟t even know.

K2 Journalist : and also just curious because Conor is sufficiently late how much logistically goes into giving leeway for venue rentals and things like that just to make sure the UFC doesn‟t get dinged too hard on fines?

CL Dana : What was the question?

RCL Journalist : How much leeway do you plan for logistically speaking for Conor to be late?

K1 Dana : Listen, when I got here at 2:57 they said Conor was on the car and I was on its way here so it says just Conors in the car on his way here he said I‟m not waiting I‟m doing the press conference I‟m a professional and I was here at 3:00.

K2 Journalist : Dana, you‟re taking the situation in stride pretty well right?

47

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K1f Dana : I‟m not giving a shit right know, he just said what he had to say he‟s gonna show up here in a minute and he‟ll answer everybody‟s questions and do whatever you know I mean then tomorrow we‟re gonna have these two face off at the waves they‟re gonna weight in they‟re gonna face off and on Saturday they‟re gonna fight out we‟re here man this is all I care about us so wait into the fight this would we I know that did this fight so big that everybody had a lot of questions and everybody wants to you know he answered his questions he‟s going to come answer his and tomorrow is one of my favorite days leading up to the fight in mid Saturday I can‟t wait to least to walk out of the tunnel.

K2f Journalist : Let you know the world want to see them face off the day, when everybody wants to see them?

K1f Dana : They‟re gonna see him face off tomorrow, one when it really counts one that we both know that they both made weight you know what I mean they‟re both mentally wherever they are after these weight cuts is going into Saturday you cannot deny that the weigh-ins on Friday or the best day other than the fight when they square off and not what I‟m looking forward to, we did this things they‟re gonna answer some questions whatever people happen you know.

K2f Journalist : Is today the biggest day of your professional career?

K1f Dana : Yeah, it‟s definitely one of them I mean there‟s a when you talk about my professional career there‟s been a lot of big days signing the deal with ESPN was a very big day and my career sign of the deal we did with box and many other days but when you talk about fights and the magnitude of a fight and you know the amount of people that are interested the fight definitely.

CF Journalist : As a fight fan yourself, could you maybe rank the height of this fight compared to maybe other box fights in history or MMA fights?

RCF Dana : Well, if you look at the history of big fights in boxing or any other sport to get over 2 million pay-per-view buys is almost impossible, you look at some of the biggest ones Mayweather and De La Hoya and Mayweather Canelo Tyson and I don‟t even think Tyson and Lennox Lewis broke 2 million didn‟t right Lennox Lewis that didn‟t break 2 million pay-per-view buys so it‟s big, it‟s very hard to do and this thing is trending to smash 2 million so I would say the hype of this fight is like nothing I‟ve ever seen before .

K2 Journalist : So everyone‟s excited about this fight but we‟ve seen people not make weight we‟ve seen late injuries, how hard is it to come up with

48

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA that back-up plan and you have a great co-main event, how do you choose which fighter can trust into the main event of one fighter has to pull out?

K1 Dana : Well, then you have to look at that both those guys make weight you know there‟s a lot if the different factors but right now is the guy without a doubt if anything should happen obviously Tony Ferguson would be next in line.

CF Journalist : and if you have to go through that again we‟ve seen we haven‟t seen Conor miss a fight but you can‟t seem to book Khabib versus Tony to save your life right that fight never happens, if you get Khabib versus Tony would you still be satisfied with that as a title main event ?

RCF Dana : That‟s not what I want obviously. This fight has to happen we‟ll see what happens dude the way you‟re thinking and that isn‟t even in my head right now I don‟t even want to think like that.

K2 Journalist : Who‟s good asked earlier?

K1 Dana : Go ahead, I was gonna hit your last question and because I‟m done after this.

K2f Journalist : Have you give a chance to Tony Ferguson it all this week, he said that he demeanor a little bit angry?

K1f Dana : I did. Tony always angry so that‟s the way he likes to that things so yeah I‟m totally cool with Tony.

K2f Journalist : If he wins he assumed that maybe he‟s next in line on darkness, you know the name that‟s the fight that every?

K1f Dana : We‟ll see.

K2f Journalist : All right thanks.

DK1 Conor : What‟s your morning? The other shop back in town will you fuck in love it the traffic is heavy and you‟re not yourself.

K2 Journalist : We appreciate you coming, can you give us an idea what was going on this afternoon for with your late arrival and what‟s just the conscious decision maybe a little bit of a mind game maybe a little psychology?

K1 Conor : You knew why I coming late cause the traffic isn‟t that heavy now bustier McGregor Floyd Dana I don‟t where that little fools is he‟s better off from them anyway you know yourself I bet you he was saying

49

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA a loaded shit be here he didn‟t say anything the last time so I mean whatever it is but it is focused these things happen.

CF Journalist : Are you disappointed in our conference I don‟t we you know the face off we were all looking forward to today and maybe that be an opportunity for you to kind of get his head a little bit up in, are your disappointed that you don‟t get to stare him down today?

RCF Conor : Yeah, well I mean don‟t get I didn‟t plan this I tried the yeah you know I said I‟, only a couple minutes late my fuck shit now my backwards couldn‟t you just stay put but whatever I just saw it he doesn‟t want to be around me, he doesn‟t want to be around these people, and that‟s it he said look at the New York and I got a Dana said he while I was in here so that‟s the truth of it so hey it is what it is fucking are giving user look plain face offs and all this year of them over many years so look I‟m here to fight this man Saturday night, he has to make way make sure he goes against now hooker way off and that‟s more important for me I want to make him wait I want them to show up on Saturday night because he has pulled it off which very last minute bit of rush no hospital and all these are polyps so get that money that I saw me and cougar looking the chickens all that he is.

K2 Journalist : Conor, you‟ve accomplished a lot of incredible things in your career already but can you kind of…?

K1 Conor : Lose on the problem whiskey, only and then that comes go beyond with you.

K2f Journalist : Can you talk about where this would rank I mean stepping away for two years from the sport coming back facing the undefeated you know unbeatable Russian champion the toughest stylistic matched up for you, where would this rank in terms of your career accomplishments at?

K1f Conor : At 10:09 a Centon abajo and knocking it out of the park I plan on knocking that man‟s nose straight into the nose please that‟s what‟s gonna happen on Saturday night.

K2f Journalist : And last thing for me Conor me, was the break down this fight we see the two opportunities to meet, he may have is in cardio, how much do those two factors into your camp we know you like to break things down to be scientific about it so how much were those a focus of your camp?

K1f Conor : I‟ve been grappling unrest and much heavier man this whole camp 200 pounds is even only yesterday 200 pounds is 25 minutes

50

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA strength you know I have caught no corners here I am ready for all outcomes. I feel once I hit he‟s gonna turn week I expect panic in humanity but we are prepared for every year every outcome, I also don‟t give up, I‟ve experienced at all I‟ve got tired in there I‟ve been on my back in there I‟ve been in every scenario you can be in under the brightest light in the entire world. I am a veteran so I‟m gonna go out there and do what I am here for to enjoy it I am here to enjoy this because this is what I love, I‟m gonna promote foss‟ on the belt to him and looked like I said saying that man‟s nose he‟s got a nosebleed.

CF Journalist : You just say it yourself there the fans were very New York we‟re here today is this the way always should have been?

RCF Conor : This is what I campaign for in New York as well I almost wasn‟t gonna show up to the New York press conference it‟s great to see the fans here now they‟re gonna keep common in common a common and it‟s gonna be a great fight week so I‟m very excited I‟m filled with energy to seeing my people come here and support me and I look forward to going a big and every single year out on Saturday night thank you so much truly from the bottom of your heart it‟s good to be back.

K2 Journalist : Khabib is carrying his belt around Tony Ferguson carrying a belt around, where is your belt?

K1 Conor : Over zero Julio Trujillo letting me cast enemy badgering what a minute but actually do I actually forgot them as I came out but there‟s a blouse gone back to get them but because I was late because that little backwards Koontz printed off the stage I was like fucking or just come on the damn stage let them carry down, let them create a fake belt, let them do this and do that, it‟s all good to me, I‟m here I know who the king is and I‟m gonna show in Saturday night.

CL Journalist : You mentioned a minute ago about in making way part of memories leaving earlier was because he says he wants to kill on schedule to go and make the way tomorrow if he doesn‟t do we still have a fight?

RCL Conor : You know what matter always avoid going on somewhere, who don‟t give a polish about the way or any that but you must make that way for the championship way but if he doesn‟t we‟ll figure it out when it when we get to it. Knowing point you know that.

K2 Journalist : Yesterday the open work days Khabib had a few things to say about the Irish language and about your army and obviously know

51

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA you don‟t get the chance correctly for, what do you have to say to those comments that email?

K1 Conor : You should never take information from an informant, you should keep distance from the informant at all times and that‟s putting it for the media that‟s the friendly way upon it. His manager is a fucking snitch terrorist rat and that‟s it I could go with their heavy detail and I will go into every detail, he was pulled off of a flight down from Cairo Egypt to on September 11 2001, he was caught with five passports in his possession, he turned informant and torn on the people that he was working with, he is a well you know what even though her man is in this country but all face and I‟m sure everyone here the earliest people I faced it all the same immigration stuff on the way over my own people are phased in my family it‟s getting stopped at the airport and it‟s not and then you‟ve got this man with such as crazy background valley Abdul Aziz and he‟s working around free, it‟s bitch believed to be honest but hey! Don‟t ever take information from an informant and that‟s what that man is doing, he‟s a rat bastard and I‟m gonna kill him on Saturday night.

CF Journalist : The fact that the response to the eye response to something he‟s never done before, do you think the presence of all these are responsive kind of Khabib and mentally?

RCF Conor : Fuck him and his mentality, we don‟t give a fuck about him, my heart is black towards this man, towards his team, towards his people, I could see I could truly see inside of that man‟s head and smile, I don‟t give a fuck about him or his people like I said that is way deeper than just fully on side ain‟t no you so it is I‟m here I‟m gonna sell this thing all the way from myself and then see what happens after that.

CL Journalist : They said you couldn‟t get an outlaws had, they said you couldn‟t get any out Brazos head. Do you think that Khabib ten right now he‟s obviously not here for the press conference, where are you at with that?

RCL Conor : Where‟s he at, he‟s breathed an hour here I mean it‟s clear as day but again I don‟t really care about his mentality idea what‟s he‟s doing and I do not give a fuck, I am ruthless here I am coming to put a hole in this man‟s skull did my knuckle in through his orbital bone and that‟s what I am going do.

CF Journalist : You have been said this is a very personal fight, you have been very gracious before and went in wins and also in defeats, do you

52

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA see yourself being able to kind of squash the beef after fighting with him that you shake your hand after the fight on Saturday night?

RCF Conor : Fuck peace, there will never be peace here I always say you should aim for peace but you can‟t aim for peace aim between the eyes, and that‟s it I‟m gonna aim right between that man choices and this never over never ever, ever over.

DK1 Journalist : Let‟s talk about whiskey for one second we have the crowd seems to be very pleased about that but your whiskey hasn‟t been announced in Israel has it arrived yet and I wonder if it‟s good because it‟s some places I‟ve read in the it‟s…

K1 Conor : have a drink of it now what you think there‟s always gonna be big roaches and people I hate and this is a and it comes with the territory when they‟re at their top of their game trust me it is the tastiest all right explicitly there is on the planet, all you put in loving I know you don‟t give up bollocks what anyone says I‟m not even trying to sell just have a shit of it just take all the jelly enjoy yourself now not you to smell you get keep me America putting in a negative machine you asked for polish me. This is for your each people but half whether we count the tree I want that everyone in filled in the stream and then chopping their loans fuck it damn it here brothers.

K2 Journalist : With the whiskey it seems like it is selling open a lot of different places especially here in , have you been getting any numbers back on how well?

K1f Conor : It‟s exceeded expectations it‟s actually following the people like I made involved a couple people that are involved in the liquor business their entire life and they‟ve never seen anything like this and I‟ve just got to thank my fans and my people who are supporting me that love that they‟ve shown me for this say I wish to myself I‟m actually going away, it has story roughly we‟re trying to meet with the man now so we‟re in a stage where we‟re trying to get the glass sweet more class created and keep the whiskey flowing so bear with us put that itself apart. I tell you what though it‟s thrown in Las Vegas that is for you we know that, we got that side.

CF Journalist : You talk about approaching he‟s fight like they‟re wars at the last press conference just so much information about Khabib that a lot of people I guess it must have really entrenched in the sport don‟t really know about. Is that part of the art of rewards you is learning as much information about your opponent as possible?

53

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA RCF Conor : I just observed I know if we shut everyone throws I know every move everyone makes that‟s it I just keep my eyes on the game that I run that‟s it I overlooked my empire with a heart bullying so that‟s it.

K2 Journalist : And after the open worked out yesterday Khabib started to talk about stuff from your past, what do you think that means that if that he went to?

CL Conor : Sorry, what was you say?

RCL Journalist : What do you think it means that he went to them and started looking into informant?

K1 Conor : I don‟t care what he said whatever it‟s all good that may mean it‟s closing in on fight time you just cook yourself and that sonic you smelly Pakistani rat beat it in 40th highway and beat it on shiny as I fucking for you that‟s it, say what you want though we don‟t give up bollocks and I fought under the pause enough to stay here with a couple of minutes actually he got an hour here, he spotted chance acquaintance and that‟s it like in the fight I believe he‟ll spot an exit and he‟ll try and take it but I won‟t let it happen.

CF Journalist : Dana was worried for a while that you wouldn‟t come back it made too much money he‟s mentioned falling out of love with the game, are you here to say the place is bustling to have you back?

RCF Conor : Yes, that‟s why I‟m here, the fan to lower the energy you know, I can‟t you can‟t beat that truly you can‟t be that it‟s as addictive as these tasty plumbers who have whiskey but you never charge so good about which also a good thing about money but all sorts of better than money more money so that‟s here there‟s a lot more coming in and the fight I just look to be here and do what I‟m doing and I‟m just gonna keep them and that‟s here I‟m only two years I‟m a it‟s just gone I‟m very, very young in the game although I‟ve been around that I‟m experienced I‟m only a young for your compared to the rest in the game so I‟m here for another good one yet.

CL Journalis : You said this is never gonna be over with Khabib, do you see yourself maybe fighting him more than once or if you get the devastating you say you‟re gonna go is this the end in terms of?

RCL Conor : Let‟s see what happens I don‟t know, we‟ll see, I‟d like to fight Ali, I‟d like to find out rap acid, if I hear him somewhere what‟s he when I love him non-stop I hear he‟s had a few fights I may want to fight I may want to spark Khabib and headline that Madison Square Garden at card next one is that November 1, 3rd November but or so that‟s less than

54

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA a month away from this one I may want to do that one that‟s what I‟m thinking of to be honest I see what happened.

K2 Journalist : Khabib said how he would choke you out, did you think about that?

K1 Conor : Lovely, get a full of shit and snitch an hour audience clapping animal so let‟s go.

K2f Journalist : I want to ask about your legacy we already talked to Dana he said he thinks you‟re the biggest star in combat sports in the world right now, and that‟s hard to argue with the numbers that you‟re generating the fans that are here from all over the world, where does your legacy go from here when it‟s already so big everything that‟s already happened in your career?

K1f Conor : Just keep there on my team keep showing up looking for and not give it at the end of the day when I sign up you‟re gonna get a fight that‟s known for a fact I come out fast I come out aggressive and it‟s a damn fight there‟s no holding there‟s none of this stalling it‟s a straight knock so that‟s it I‟m gonna keep doing what I‟m doing my legacy assets down to a watch having to force the only everything is I just keep on going see what happens.

K2f Journalist : What would you describe your level of hunger to be now that you don‟t have to worry about money you have your hands and a lot of different projects and might Khabib hungrier than you?

K1f Conor : No, I‟m starving for this man‟s head I am gonna eat him alive in here and I don‟t give up all up so there‟s no way this man sweeter than me there‟s nobody that‟s hunger to me in this game, we don‟t stop unto on it, I‟m 24/7 on this game so that‟s it.

CF Journalist : Back in the day, you used to say that you want to come to Las Vegas maybe a month before or 40 days before to get used to the climate and to get away with the jetlag, how come you haven‟t done?

RCF Conor : It‟s hard to leave Berlin when you‟re in it it‟s a damn good place to be the air to believe with everything it‟s my home it‟s where I‟m from so I spent a lot more time in Harlan this time but I‟ve also spent I‟ve also done the rounds in Las Vegas, I‟ve been here for many months on end so I‟m experienced with the Las Vegas climate also so I said I‟ll stay in my beautiful home of Arlen and then come out a little bit layer and that‟s what we don‟t I feel great I‟m energized up I‟m a day from the weight- ins of lots of energy so I‟m very happy with it, we don‟t inherently.

55

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA K2 Journalist : A couple of weeks ago you looked Khabib into the eye and you‟re going to do that again tomorrow, what would you try, what did you see back then and what do you think you will see tomorrow?

K1 Conor : I saw a man that does not want to be here to be honest and like you saw they got out quick stuff so that‟s what I saw but you can‟t warn now you‟re right now it‟s in front of you so I‟m excited about that.

CF Journalist : Jose Aldo was also a fighter that hadn‟t lose an eye in a very long time but could be passed and he came out very ignorant aggressively in the first round, do you think we would see something similar with Khabib?

RCF Conor : He‟s afraid of a clatter make no mistake he does not like to be him, he has nervous reactions he‟s flincher we call them and in that notice ranks that‟s what he is, so he‟s also easily backed up so I‟m very prepared and very aware of what to expect in here and it ain‟t nothing that phases me.

DK1 Journalist : Conor, what‟re you doing?

K2 Conor : What‟s up man!

K1 Journalist : Thanks.

K2f Conor : Good, how are you?

K2f Journalist : Very good, thanks. You‟ve got one what do you think you‟ll ever need to spend you‟ve done it, your inner forth a little bit. Look at all the funds you have here. We are the artists members of the media want to see you for you can‟t open it again when is that gonna happen?

K1f Conor : So I said the other day like I said is the terminal for you man I know the situation with the crow park stadiums and no we want to do big but I mean I tell you what I‟d fight in the ring soil but putting the rings hood on cell check our load when I made my boxing debut or my MMA debut also I made it a ring so club next to the National Stadium and if it‟s a pole and if it‟s about 50 people but I forget waiting and that‟s I mean you gotta ask these guys here you got a stain and these guys because I am certainly I say the most fine in Ireland before I call out there.

K2f Journalist : Where there‟s a will there‟s a way Conor, you‟ve got the will?

K1f Conor : Thank you, sir. I appreciate that and you‟re dead wrong the deadly.

56

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CF Journalist : He‟s like recently about how the sport needs more weight classes you sort of compared it to boxing, somebody in your position you know a push from you would sort of mean a lot in that it‟s usually doesn‟t seem too keen on 165 but with guys that 90s does employ a push me for that how necessary you think 165 is to the UFC?

RCF Conor : I think it would benefit we have more champions I think with an overly good health help athletes in their weight coach situation I don‟t think it‟s the be- all end-all I think when people are campaigning for these weight classes and campaigner for anything in general with the UFC or anything they usually use them more of a complaining tactic or like they don‟t do this work and it‟s like a whining tactic. I think you need to sit down and discuss all aspects of it I mean what the pros and what the cons are and the figure it out I personally believe it would benefit having more belts on the line potential Julie wait Trevor wait champions extension it would make Martha to pay more juices pay-per- views and I feel we could sit down and figure it out and we can here we get we could get to a solution. I am far at the 135, 165, 175, 185, 195, 205, and then we‟ll see where we‟re at.

K2 Journalist : Not to look far in the future but would you potentially see your near future at 165 if that was a possibility to the pitchers maybe another belt?

K1 Conor : I mean have you followed my career mate, oh you could go 180 boy, don‟t give a bollocks tonight is avoid there and interest me I‟ll take it so I would like the 165 pound belt I think but I‟d also like the 170 pounds belt so I mean we‟ll see what happens. I think the game is going through a stage where we‟re looking to you we‟re looking to make it better forward for the athletes who are competing and the struggles of the weight class and then also the more belts we party but I understand like functions the way boxing has gone and things like that does there‟s like hesitation to it but again I think if we sit down if we map out the pros and cons I think we can come to a correct solution that benefits everyone.

DK1 Dana : I‟m gonna take one more question.

K2 Journalist : Dana said that it feels like your mental warfare game is actually surpassed even curious like your thoughts about that comment?

K1 Conor : Muhammad Ali is a special individual I do not I am not even close to that man‟s brain that‟s the things he don‟t wear his career he is a special individual and to be even have my name next to that man is like is

57

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA truly a truly proud moment for me, thank you all, but I cannot compare myself for that great honor.

K2f Journalist : This plays where do two million pay-per-views buys, how much money could you stand to make it two million?

K1f Conor : We‟re estimating around 3 to 3,5 million I‟d say are closing around the 50 million dollar mark so foreign mixed martial artist to make 50 million dollars in the mixed martial arts belt it‟s quite breathtaking

DK1 Dana : You want to ask question right? Go ahead buddy.

K2 Journalist : How long until your billionaire Conor grabs on the whiskey?

K1 Conor : Thank you so much I‟d say it that well I‟m 30 years of age and say by 25 I‟ll be 35 yes 25 good luck thank you sir, I appreciate that.

CL Journalist : 25?

RCL Conor : Yes.

K2 Journalist : Ok, good luck.

K1 Conor : Thank you so much, sir.

DK1 Dana : Thank you guys for coming. Conor do some photo right here in front of the podium.

1. Exchange of Information

The conversation above is a long and complex one. The conversational structure in press conference between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor began with K1, a statement by Khabib Nurmagomedov is giving information to the audience. Normally, in a conversation K2 would be the first in the exchange process, but in this case it is not. It is because usually at a press conference, before asking questions, the audience have to wait to welcome from K1 as the owner of information to ask or demand of information asked by K2.

58

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA After K1 the next conversation structure is DK1, the owner of the information and moderator of the press conference. In the structure of conversation, DK1 is a person who has actually known the answer or the person who has knowledge of the information. DK1 roles as one who receives information or one who is indirectly interacting with K1. DK1 asked K2, the journalists from some of the media the questions, and allowed to ask Khabib Nurmagomedov for information as K1.

Based on the conversation, the exchange process has continued, as K1 and

K2 would be followed by the f to K1f and K2f. This structure corresponds with the formula mentioned by Martin in his theory. The structure of conversation above was the structure consists of 10 different kinds of formulas based on formulas mentioned by Martin. This long structure is happened because the information that K2 wants, could be fulfilled after a long step. In the conversation above, there were three spokesmen. Because the conversation above was a conversation that took place in a press conference required both parties to participate. Three speakers were present in a talk related to the program that would be held later. And the event involved at least two participants and a middleman between both parties. The speaker on both sides have full responsibility for what was spoken of. Therefore any question K2 asked K1 is the owner of the information.

The structure of the conversation also suggests that each speaker is doing a

DK1 in asking for information. As in the following conversation.

59

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA In the structure of conversation above, Dana as DK1 asked the journalist as

K2 if they had any questions that would like to be asked to Conor as K1. As previously known, DK1 was a person who knew the answer, therefore Dana asked to confirm that K2 wanted to ask K1 for information, so that Dana asked to K2. Dana roles as a mediator of K2 and K1. He asked K2 to ask K1 for information, and also as the recipient of the information, he would pass on to K1 if that information is unclear or not understood by K1. That is why Dana does the DK1. As in the following conversation below.

DK1 Dana : I‟m gonna take one more question.

K2 Journalist : Dana said that it feels like your mental warfare game is actually surpassed even Muhammad Ali curious like your thoughts about that comment?

K1 Conor : Thank you so much Dana I appreciate the kind of words I true I also have nothing but good things to say about you…

There are a few moves of the dynamics of the conversation above. Basically, the conversation that happened in the press conference contains of clarification and confirmation. This is because K2 wants the information they got before and then wants the clarification or confirmation related is true or not. Based on the conversation, the domination move is clarification and confirmation. But the challenge is also found in the conversation, as follow:

CH Dana : Sorry, sorry I don‟t understand one words you‟re saying right now, you say the only thing I ever heard.

K2 Journalist : So he got he made a deal with him right they put it like a be supposed to be snitching giving information about other fighters?

Based on the structure above, Dana has indirectly refused to answer questions from journalists, as he has no idea what the question really means. The challenge occurs not only when K1 refuses to answer for reasons he does not want to answer

60

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA nor because he thinks that the question should not be answered but also as in the conversation above. The challenge occurred in the conversation above was due to K1 being unable to answer because he did not understand and therefore he chose not to answer the question and refused to provide information he had never before known.

4.2 Findings

Based on the analysis above, the number of the structure and the dynamic aspects of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN program described through the table below. The exchange structure for information and goods and services are found in the conversation used by Khabib

Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto. Each of the exchange consists of giving and demanding of information and goods and services.

Thus, based on the data analysis above, it has gotten the formula from the conversation structure used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN as:

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Table 4.2 and 4.3 showed the total number of exchange structure and dynamic aspects of conversation as classified by Martin (1992) used by Khabib

Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto in conversation. According to Martin, there are

18 formulas of exchange structures which each of them is 9 for exchange of information and 9 for exchange of goods and services. Some of the formulas are used and found in the conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto. They produced 4 numbers for the formula: K2^K1, 1 number for DK1^K2^K1^K2f^K1f, and 1 number for A2^A1. So, the total of exchange structure is 6, 5 numbers for exchange of information used K (Knower) and 1 number for exchange goods and services used A (Action). While, for the dynamic aspects of conversation used by

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto are found 5 numbers, 3 for confirmation,

2 for clarification, and 0 for challenge.

In the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor at the press conference, the exchange process being domination was the exchange of information. It is because the information is more necessary in this conversation than goods and services. From the long conversations above, it created the same long and complex structure of conversations that follows.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Total 31

From the table 4.5 above, the total of exchange structure is 31 formulas and 38

for the dynamics of conversation. From the formula as stated by Martin in his

theory, there were 3 numbers for K1, 9 numbers for K2^K1, 2 numbers for

K2^K1^K2f, 8 numbers for K2^K1^K2f^K1f, 4 numbers for DK1^K2^K1, 1

number for DK1^K2^K1^K2f, and 4 numbers for DK1^K2^K1^K2f^K1f. All of

the formulas are from the exchange of information. In exchange of goods and

services there are no found in the conversation. It is because the information is

more necessary at the press conference event.

Conor McGregor at the press conference

Total 38

Whereas for the dynamic of conversation, there are 19 moves of confirmation,

18 moves of clarification, and 1 move for challenge. The long conversation is created the long of the structure of conversation, so from the structure produced many moves of exchange.

69

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Based on the structure of the conversation between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN program and the conversation used by Khabib

Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and Dana White at the press conference are different. Between the two conversations analysis above, the conversation structure at the press conference is clearly longer and more complex, with 57 moves structure.

The conversation at the ESPN program, there is only 11 moves. It is because the differences in the process of exchanging from each conversations.

In conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN, there are only two parties, therefore the exchange process only happened between the two of them. It is quite another of the conversation brought by Khabib

Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and Dana White at the press conference. There are three speakers who each have information. K2 is not only asking for information on one side, but to the three parties of the speakers.

The structure of the conversation is not only seen by how much or how long a conversation is done or produced, but by how much the exchange process is created or produced in a conversation. Even inside each conversation, the more structure the exchange of information is giving and demanding, but each structure is different.

4.3 Discussion

In the conversation between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at the ESPN program, the structure of the conversation being dominant is K2^K1, 4 moves. It proved that in a conversation happened between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto did much more in exchange for information. As for the exchange of goods and services in the structure of the conversation, there was only 1 move for

A2^A1. It happened when A2 asked permission before, to A1 for asking of

70

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA information. The permit is a service found in a conversation that intends to do so more decently. Beyond the formula, in the conversation between Khabib

Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto, it found the formula DK1^K2^K1^K2f^K1f.

The presence of DK1 in the conversation was caused by one of the speakers have known the related information but he continued to ask the question that was intended to highlight or as a full explanation of the information he had previously received.

The dynamics of conversation in the conversation between Khabib

Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at ESPN program as dominant was confirmation,

3 moves and 2 moves for clarification, while for a challenge did not exist. It is because, Khabib Nurmagomedov never refuses to answer questions or give information to Brett Okamoto. Challenge would occur when the speaker refuses to give information. In the conversation what Brett Okamoto wants, is information, and

Brett expresses his curiosity by asking Khabib as confirmation whether the related information is true or false based on what he had obtained earlier. The information was the accident happened before, thus Brett wanted the details of information from

Khabib. That makes the confirmation be dominant in the structure of the conversation.

Meanwhile, in the conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov with the journalists at the press conference, the dominant formula is K2^K1, 9 moves. In the conversation, exchanged of information is more found. The exchange of goods and services is not found because it does not involve an action but only the exchange of information between journalists and the speakers. In exchange for information, the least structure to be done is DK1^K2^K1^K2f. The result is also a very long structure. The formula in the structure of conversation that is gotten different is

71

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA because each conversation is interrupted or changed the topic of question results in a different structure, whether it is an exchange of information beginning with K2 or

DK1, or beginning with the dynamics of conversation that makes the conversation structure produce a different formula.

The dynamics of conversation that became dominant in conversation used by

Khabib Nurmagomedov at the press conference is confirmation, 19 moves. Not far apart from the clarification, 18 moves, while for a challenge there is 1 move. In the conversation, the speaker refuses to answer the journalist's questions. It is because the speaker who does not understand the information of the journalist is trying to get at him, so the speaker decides not to give any information, and challenge is found in the conversation.

Among the two conversations used by Khabib Nurmagomedov at the ESPN program and the press conference, both having the same structure in exchanges of information and producing the same formulas but in the different amounts. Based on the analysis, the structure is the longest resulting is from the conversation that took place at the press conference. At a press conference K2 is done by journalists, while

K1 is Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and Dana White. The conversation involved some people as opposed to a conversation at the ESPN program that involved only two persons, so the structure produced is minimal and dominates just a few formulas.

According to the theory said by Martin, each exchange has nine formulas.

Based on the structural analysis of the conversation on each conversation, not all the formula is found. Some formulas did not exist in that conversation. Whereas, according to Halliday, in conversational structure there are two exchanges. The

72

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA exchange structure in conversation is built in part of speech function in commodity being exchange.

Role in Exchange Commodity exchanged

Goods and Services Information

Giving Offer Statement

Demanding Command Question

Table 4.7 Exchange: Role and Commodity (From Halliday & Mattiessen 2004:

107).

The commodity exchange could be goods and services or information and the role in the exchange could be giving or demanding. It brings the idea of the orientation in commodity exchange in a conversation. It can be Knowledge-oriented and Action-oriented. In discussing on the orientation in exchanges, terms of Primary and Secondary for Knower in Knowledge-orientation is K1 and K2, and for Actor in

Action-orientation is A1 and A2. For demanding information or goods and services in the conversation would begin with K2 and A2. While for giving information or goods and services is with K1 and A1.

In conversation between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto, the conversation begins with K2, but the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov at the press conference begins with K1. In the process of exchange used by Khabib

Nurmagomedov among both the conversation begins with demanding of information, but what makes the different is the formulas. The conversation at the ESPN program starts with the question but at the press conference is started with the statement. It is because in the conversation of an interview, the source of information is available only to the person being interviewed, while the interviewer only works as one who

73

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA asks. Therefore, in the process of exchange information or goods and services in data analysis, the move is not beginning with giving, but demanding. Whereas at the press conference, the journalists whose are asking the question should be waited for the speaker to ask the question, therefore K1 be the first structure in the conversation.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1 Conclusions

After analyzing the structure of the conversation used by Khabib

Nurmagomedov, the researcher has finally come to a conclusion.

1. In the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brett Okamoto at

ESPN program, there are 5 moves of exchanging of information and 1 move

of exchanging of goods and services. The conversational structure used by

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor at the press conference, 31

moves of the exchange of information are found and 0 for the exchange of

goods and services. At the press conference there was no action involve in the

conversation.

2. The dynamic aspects of the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov

and Brett Okamoto, found confirmation 3 moves, clarification 2 moves and 0

for challenge. In the conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor

McGregor at the press conference, the researcher found 19 moves for

confirmation, 18 moves for clarification, and 1 move for challenge.

5.2 Suggestions

Based on the result of the research, the researcher would give some suggestion as follows:

75

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1. Everyone who reads this thesis, it is suggested to understand, increase, and

know more about Systemic Functional Linguistics and the structure of

conversation develop by Halliday and Martin.

2. The researcher hopes that this study could be studied more deeply in the

classroom so that further researchers could use the study with a deep, wide,

and accurate explanation.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Appendix 1 Transcript of conversation used by Khabib Nurmagomedov and

Brett Okamoto at ESPN program

Brett : Look up being 4 years in a people like myself has been asking, are you going to fight Conor? When are you going to fight Conor? Now if I‟d is days away, how does it feel to have a days away?

Khabib : Yes, I expect just because you see all the time try to make big fights, like if they can make good fights and sometime make money, why not? you know, Conor is beginning, I am beginning, and this is very good popular, and they like 2 years ago, like 1 year ago, I think about this. Its time would gonna come, because we have to fight, this is money fight. This is very interesting fight for people, for fans, you know. This is very big fights for people and right now, we‟re here one way big for fight and you know, my weight is good, my shape is good, I never feel like this before, never. This is my best trip ever, and 30 years old, this is third my fight in last 9 months and most active and done to use champion, and you know, I think I‟m lucky.

Brett : The bus incident and a front, you‟ve been asking a lot of question about it, he‟s been asking a lot of question. Do you care about the bus incident now, days before the fight?

Khabib : No, I don‟t care about this. You know why? Because like people who with me in bus like, Chiesa, Iaquinta, girls like Namajunas and other girls like Kowalkiewicz, Ilir Latifi -- I remember everybody -- a lot of people with me in bus, and they know how quickly this happened and how many guys between us, how many guys don‟t let me go out. Everybody hold me. You can ask these guys what happened when they come. I feel relaxed and I‟m laughing, you know. And I tried to go out and then I understand, he come with 30 people with camera, you know? If you come to fight with someone, why you need camera? For show up? Then I understand this is like crazy, you know, and they tried to promo this and most important also. I‟m gonna talk to them, I‟m gonna explain everything inside the cage.

Brett : What do you want to say inside the cage?

Khabib : Last fight, when we fight with Allaquinta, I talked with him, I talked with his coaches, I talked with Barboza, Barboza‟ coaches, I talked with Michelle Waterson, Michelle Waterson‟ coaches, with him, I‟m gonna talk in a little bit different, and you know, make him humble, teach him, sometimes slap him, make him tired. Cause when you always tired, he give up, you know, they tire to like “take you down!”,

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA you know, “oh please choke me very quickly because I‟m tired” like he did it with Nate Diaz. But it‟s gonna be long night, I‟m gonna make tired, inside the cage.

Brett : Why do you gonna say to make him humble? So, you gonna to make him humble?

Khabib : I‟m gonna ask him, “hey! Where is your bus, now?, where is your other guys?, what happen now?, where is everything?, bring everybody here!”. We will say, we‟ll say, it is gonna be interesting, you know, sometimes you never know what you‟re gonna say, but like he will be talk with Dana White, you know, crush his hype.

Brett : When you guys were at the press conference, Connor said that if you had gotten off that bus you would be dead and you would be in jail. What do you think would have happened if you would have gotten?

Khabib : Nobody can say, who is gonna die, who is gonna know, this is not his option, this is God option, nobody can say “hey, you gonna die” or something like this. How many guys living like after you should someone, like you cannot control this and of course definitely he cannot control this, and you know who‟s gonna die, I don‟t know, who‟s gonna die tomorrow or after tomorrow, or today, nobody knows, but I‟m confident, you know. When I watched, I don‟t feel nothing, he‟s like drunk guy, I feel he‟s like, his face is like this, you know, he nervous, he drunk, and he a little bit white, you know, he‟s like, when he said to down, “no, no, no, I don‟t want to touch him, I wanna watch his eyes”, and I think I‟m here and I watched his eyes and I feel nothing. I swear to God, like he nervous, he drunk. How he wanna go fight with me in 25 minutes? This is not Nate Diaz, this is not (his friends), this is completely different fight. If you wanna stop him, you kill him. This guy have to keep. If I see him, if I keep see him, I‟m gonna keep going, I‟m gonna keep go forward, don‟t trust, stay relax, and I‟ll give him a very good, like crazy time inside the cage.

Brett : If you have a chance to finish him in the first minute of the fight, do you wanna do it?

Khabib : We‟ll see. Maybe, maybe not but honestly, it is hard question. Of course, I‟m gonna try to smash him if I have chance. In my mind, I wanna make him tired and I‟m gonna do this, insya Allah. I‟m gonna do this, because when I watched the fight with Alfareze, he has very bad condition, he is not a best fighter in that division, of course I‟m not underestimating. He‟d very good in his box on its good timing, but my plan everybody know, I‟m gonna keep go forward, but don‟t trust.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Brett : So he said that his brand of whiskey will be on the canvas and UFC 229. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Khabib : I don‟t know this. Because I don‟t understand his language, you know. He talked about “we fight with English empire” but if you fight with English empire, why you talked English language? I learned their own language, I learned language they have, but he talked in English and I don‟t understand in English. I know my English is not very good, my English is like crazy little bit, but everybody understand my English, but his English in press conference like 56% I understand what he talked about, but mostly no. if you talk about my language, I‟ll talk my language, I talk Russia, English, and , but he talked about one language. He talked about “wow, we fight with English empire and we like this”, but what happened with your language? If you love your country, you have to speak with your language. If you just show up, if you want to show up “oh, I learn, he take fly with him”, but you don‟t talk with your language. You talked English but never talk about, “oh I fight with my family, fight with English empire. If you fight, what about your language?

Brett : So you don‟t care about this?

Khabib : I don‟t care about this, of course, because I can‟t control this and I don‟t want to control this, did skill, did everything, they can put his face, I don‟t care about this. The most important when cage closed, let‟s go. This is most important, this is I‟m waiting for and I feel ready in my way, my shape, my mind, my mental, everything is ready.

Brett : He has talked about your brother, he‟s called your father as a coward. He has made fun of where you live, are you going into this fight angry at all?

Khabib : A little bit. But I can control my emotion. He can say whatever he wants. When some alcoholic guy is talking about something, people don‟t care about this, I don‟t care about what he‟s talking about, cause I know who I am, I know my friends, my family know, my close people know who I am, and 100% I am sure he knows though, but he just wanna make me nervous, but it‟s okay. This is part of his game and of course I‟m a little bit angry, but you have to control your emotion. When I go to the cage, I‟m gonna control and I have plan: don‟t trust, stay relax, go forward, and make him tired, after I can do it that I want.

Brett : When you are around him, do you feel like he‟s putting on an actor or do you think that is where do you see is what you get from him?

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Khabib : At press conference, he looks like a drunk guy, it‟s crazy, it‟s very interesting. How you want to fight when you use a lot of drugs and whiskey? How you want to fight 25 minutes? This is not boxing, brother. I‟m going to be close all the time. This is not a distance fight with Nate Diaz. This is completely different. We will see.

Brett : So UFC just held it is first event in Russia earlier this month. Do you think that‟s open the door for you to fight in Russia at some point in your career?

Khabib : I really want fight in Russia, because if I fight in Russia, my father is gonna bring Connor with me. Today, one more time, my father go US Embassy, they say no. he cannot come. This is my big dream, my father can stay with me, ashamed Connor. This is crazy, but I don‟t understand why US don‟t giving visa, but it‟s okay. But I‟m gonna fight in Russia, my father can come. It is very big dream, we‟ll see. I talked with the UFC people, they very happy about Russia event, cause a lot of people come at 23.000 people. I think they can make very big game in Russia with me. They can make this.

Brett : What just happened in downstairs, can you explain what that was?

Khabib : There are a lot of people, everybody come for support me. I‟m very appreciated. I never see this with fighters or something like this. This, give me very good energy, very big maturation. Next Saturday, I want to show this inside the cage.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Appendix 2 Transcript of conversation of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor

McGregor at Press Conference

Khabib : What‟s up guys, 3 p.m. this conference is beginning. I am not waiting for nobody let us go if you have a question I‟m here.

Dana : Alright, alright what‟s up everybody? Thank you coming out today, supposed to be a video played and all kinds of stuff that went on before this but uh Conor is not here yet and Khabib said he‟s not going to wait, he wants to start the press conference without. Does anybody the media have a question for Khabib? I don‟t let my crew is ready let‟s get somebody down here you guys.

Journalist : Okay, well Khabib let‟s ask how do you feel about this I mean you are here at a press conference by yourself giving that deal with what the emotion is like for you happy to be here by yourself in Conor?

Khabib : Hey, I no need to wait for nobody. This is 3:00 p.m. friends is here, media is here, everybody is here, Dana is a little bit very late, it‟s okay about 3:00 p.m. I beginning if you guys have a questions let‟s go.

Journalist : This is a huge opportunity for you mastered by biggest fight of all time in UFC history, let me ask you what do you think this does for your career what comes next, what do you see and we saw Conor get two belts we‟ve seen people go away classes. What do you do after the biggest fight in UFC history?

Khabib : Honestly, I don‟t know because I am not underestimate this guy you know, I‟m preparing my rate is good, tonight I have to make weight and it‟s like after tomorrow I‟m focused on after tomorrow, we will see we‟re going to talk after this fight.

Journalist : Dana, what‟s your emotion right now the biggest star of the sport all these people wanting to see Conor and he‟s not here. What‟s your think about that?

Dana : Listen, that I‟m excited I can‟t wait for the weight-ins I can‟t wait for the fight and Conor is in the car right now he‟s on his way here so he‟ll be here in a few minutes but yeah I‟m excited so far, so good, everything‟s been perfect and I‟m ready for the fight now.

Journalist : It dated just lastly for you I mean between the main and the co-main huge fights at lightweight item in the future the vision look exciting but we still got that Dustin and they fight out there that we‟re wondering what‟s on the back because that would seem to factor into

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA a future title shot as well. Can you give us any updates is that fight happening is it yeah the main event?

Dana : What we‟re still working on New York and yeah as far as I know right now that fights out yeah.

Journalist : Conor always tries different things to get inside your head. Are you surprised that he‟s not here or were you expecting something like this?

Khabib : About if you‟re talking about we go inside my head, we‟re gonna say on Saturday night, we‟re gonna say this.

Journalist : Are you surprised that he‟s not here or were you expecting this?

Khabib : No, I don‟t think about him you know, I have lose weight, I have a schedule, 3:00 p.m. which company has to begin because I have schedule I have to make weight I have to worry about myself, why I have to think about him, he comes or not if somebody late this is not my problem.

Journalist : Brooklyn happens six months ago almost exactly six months ago. Are you angry about what happened then?

Khabib : Little bit, if I say no this is not true, a little bit of course, I am angry little bit emotional but my job when I go to the cage I have to control my emotional I have to stay relaxed but keep going and more this guy.

Journalist : is the anger help you?

Khabib : Sometime this happened, sometime this is helped you, sometime is not, but most important stay relaxed when you go to the cage this is most important.

Journalist : Back in New York a few weeks ago Conor said a few things about your teammates your family your fellow countrymen, is it gonna safe going to Russia these days?

Khabib : Sorry, sorry, once again?

Journalist : Conor said that your fellow countrymen and your family, is it safe going to Russia these days?

Khabib : He can say whatever he want, when alcoholic someone drunk I talk, nobody cares about him, we just live in Milan ignore him and when we go to the cage we will see, we‟re gonna talk.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : Just lastly, the wake up we know it‟s always difficult, how much have you got left it up to come tonight and have a tree weighting right now away?

Khabib : Because it‟s all always is hard, Thursday this is my weight kind of day and you know, that‟s why I don‟t want be wait for someone 30 minutes, 40 minutes, that‟s why 3:00 p.m. press conference, after press conference I have to go home and focus on my World Cup.

Journalist : Khabib, question for you, win or lose will you shake Conor‟s hand after the fight?

Khabib : I‟m gonna shake his hand after fight? No, no way.

Journalist : Why not?

Khabib : Because…

Journalist : I know you‟re on a strict schedule, how much time are you gonna wait for Conor to get here, do you have to leave after a set period of time?

Khabib : I don‟t know I had not gone I go say maybe two minute maybe 20 minutes. I‟m gonna let you know guys before I leave.

Journalist : Tommy Ferguson was at the media day today and he brought his belt, he believes he‟s the real champion, what‟s your response to that?

Khabib : You have to believe, when you fight like this high-level fight you know, you have to believe champ, nobody can beat “oh it is okay, I am okay about this”, but I am not okay about when Dana says where Conor belt is. I am not okay about this because Dana already knows where Conor‟s belt is. He have to know but you know he brings within belts like believe his self, it‟s okay I‟m okay about this and tell this guy, hey he lose his belt he lose his mind two years he didn‟t fight in UFC.

Journalist : Last question, I know there‟s some rumors around a 165 belt being introduced one day, would you be interested in fighting for a 165- pound title?

Khabib : I like this favor I like this wait, why not 165, 175, or 170 like I think in future you‟ll see it‟s gonna do these weights like right know I don‟t know and I don‟t think about this way to you know because after tomorrow I have biggest fight in UFC history and I will focus on this fight.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : When you sit down and visualize Saturday night, what‟s your vision happening in the Octagon?

Khabib : How I see fight is going, I think like beginning on the kill shot I have to be careful with him because we have good I mean good boxing you know, but my resting at my pressure, my resting at my pressure you have to kill me first you know, Insya Allah I‟m gonna stop this game, gonna finish this guy, this is my plan.

Journalist : Khabib over here, to your right. Dana, um… given what‟s happened in the build up to this and in New York and the way you‟ve been with each other the discussion of Islam the whiskey last week, has this become bigger than just a fight in a steel cage on a Saturday night?

Khabib : Honestly, this is for me this is more than defend my title, for me is for them fight for the title more than event you now, for me it‟s personal. Honestly, it is personal and of course this is because fight in UFC history and we cannot this broke this record numbers already talked about this and you know. For me it‟s personal.

Journalist : Finally, do you believe that the way Conor McGregor behaves not turning up on time disrespects you as the champion and the sport?

Khabib : I don‟t care about this you know, most important this is believe myself, this is most important, I don‟t care about someone believe me or not.

Journalist : Khabib, you said before that you‟re gonna give him 25 minutes in jail inside the Octagon though he still feel the same way is the fight going to decision?

Khabib : Maybe decision, maybe I‟m gonna finish him you know, but all the time when he tired didn‟t he give up, this is all the time like before bites you, he talks like “I‟m ready for this” when you fight with Diaz, when you fight with Mayweather, but when he‟s tired, he gives up all the time.

Journalist : How do you think your level of hunger in this fight compares to Conor‟s?

Dana : Go said again honey, I‟m sorry I was lose my pay attention.

Journalist : How do think your level of hunger compares to Conor‟s?

Khabib : Sorry about this, because I don‟t hear. Of course I believe myself. How come here if I don‟t believe myself, I am UFC champion undefeated undisputed if you don‟t believe yourself high we can take

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA this and I believe God first and after I believe myself. You know I‟m here because God helped me, that why I‟m here.

Journalist : Do you think you want this more than Conor does know that Conor has money and think who‟s hungrier?

Khabib : We‟ll see. Saturday night I‟m gonna show this. All question is gonna be answered. Please wait two more days.

Journalist : and Dana for you, you had expressed in the past concern that McGregor may not be hungry because he made all that money and has all that fame now that this fight has been made. What do you think about his hunger?

Dana : that McGregor might what?

Journalist : You don‟t know if he would take another fight, because he made a ton of money and already accomplished what he had wanted. What do you think about his level of hunger?

Dana : yeah, I know basically what I said is when a guy makes a hundred million dollars you don‟t know if he‟s ever gonna fight again you know Conor made a lot of money and he went and I‟m sure he had a lot fun and did what he wanted to do and you know there‟s no matter how much money you make you can only sit home for so long and you start to go crazy and this you can tell this guy‟s passionate about fighting he loves it he loves breaking records and he obviously loves making money, so he‟s back.

Journalist : just quickly Khabib, what do you think of the crowd here because they‟ve been very loud leading it to this fight, does it affect you at all dealing with the fuse, has it affected you mentally and like surprise there‟s no more Russian fancy?

Khabib : I love these fans you know, because without this fan this event is not happen you know and thank you so much guys, they come here buy tickets I‟ll plan, they come you know without friends is nothing happened, thank you so much, and these guys give me maturation.

Dana : All right, this is awkward.

Journalist : Dana, we got a question for you. In the center in the back straight ahead, can you give an update you said yesterday the pay-per-view

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA was tracking, can you give us any updates has it changed since yesterday?

Dana : It is crazy that the track all the numbers are tracking higher than Mayweather and McGregor and you know this is a fight is the global quiet the whole world literally will be watching this fight so I don‟t know man, it‟s huge, its massive I don‟t want to come out and say we‟re gonna do Mayweather, McGregor numbers but we could possibly do Mayweather McGregor numbers.

Journalist : How does this Khabib leaving us are getting you know stared out today, how does this affect the final day is building up to this way?

Dana : It doesn‟t you know, obviously this wasn‟t the plan today you know, this should happens.

Journalist : didn‟t show up on time of Conor are you upset with Khabib?

Dana : They‟ll both be at the weight-ins tomorrowon time and we‟ll get the stare down the bar when it matters the fights actually gonna to be honest with you I prefer that anyway tomorrow we saw the stare down at New York. I want to see the stare down tomorrow that‟s the one I‟m interests in.

Journalist : Just going back to what you said earlier about 165, why are you so adamantly against?

Dana : Never been talked about it is fake news.

Journalist : So just the concept of it, why do you not like it?

Dana : I don‟t like anything about it. It depletes the 55-pound division and all the guys that can‟t win titles at 55 or 70 are gonna run a 65 and try to win a diamond.

Journalist : The press conference always a good way to I guess people to satiate your appetite for a fight like this. Are you disappointed with how things have turned out here?

Dana : Listen, this should happens like I said, we have press conference in New York this one was you know what we planned not how we planned it to go down but at the end of the day you know like I always say about McGregor with the mental warfare game to go on and all the things that have said there‟s a counter to it right there I‟m here on time I could I spoke to the media I‟m out of here so I‟m not gonna play your game and wait for you. This is all part of that goes on leading up to the fight.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : This is a contractual obligation for Conor to be here we‟ve seen what happened in the past that he has not showing up to a conference is there any consequences for anything of this nature?

Dana : is what? Conferences?

Journalist : Dana, I see you said from the beginning when you guys came in that this is a global sport you can go anywhere in the world and people love to watch two guys fight. Is this literally what you had in mind a guy from Ireland and a guy from Dagestan the biggest fight in UFC history I mean this is what you planned for all along and what you said it was coming. How does it feel now that you‟re here with a fight like this?

Dana : Yeah, I‟ve talked to many people about this week you know as you continue to grow the sport and you know go into all these different countries and find new talent and as technology continues to get better with OOT and literally the world can tune in and watch a fight together so yeah we‟re there this is just the beginning of getting to that place that I used to talk about.

Journalist : and you‟re a big boxing guy, do you think now Conor is the biggest cell in combat sports is he the biggest star with this fight coming in coming back and what he did against Mayweather. Mayweather it had a couple fights around 500,000 buys and then he fights Pacquiao and Conor, but is it a two state Conors the biggest star in the world and combat sportnet 100 cent?

Dana : If you look at what he‟s done think about this when you talk about Floyd Mayweahter‟s numbers, we‟ve made whether it‟s been fighting for 20 years, Conor McGregor has not been around for 20 years and he‟s been pulling big numbers you know, pretty much right after he got in here so the answer that is absolutely.

Journalist : Dana, I want to ask you, if you have any updates about Joe Jones any opponents in mind anything you can tell us and also what do you think about the east side of deal didn‟t know?

Dana : John Jones isn‟t in shape yet, John Jones hasn‟t trained as he got ready, so he‟s got to get into camp before we can even think about when he‟s gonna fight I‟d like to see him fight at the end of the year at the beginning of next year but we‟ll see, and what was the last question?

Journalist : What do you think about you said a deal that he had hold because a change thing?

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Dana : What do I think about these sorts of thing?

Journalist : You said that they got a deal 33 I guess they made a deal you started made a deal with him right then if he tales information?

Dana : Sorry, sorry I don‟t understand one words you‟re saying right now, you say the only thing I ever heard.

Journalist : So he got he made a deal with him right they put it like a be supposed to be snitching giving information about other fighters?

Dana : Talking about John Jones?

Journalist : Yes.

Dana : Yeah and what would happen with John Jones? Yeah you‟d have to ask Jeff Novitzky about that I don‟t know enough about it to honestly give you an educated answer on that. I don‟t give a shit about drug testing anymore a lot of that business you saw it does it, that was the biggest nightmare of my life.

Journalist : I know you were on an instagram chat and you‟d mentioned that Nate Diaz like you would talk to Nate Diaz about that Madison Square Garden headlining event is that is there any update on that?

Dana : Don‟t I said I would talk to him about it?

Journalist : well you said…

Dana : Somebody asked me on there that fight should be five rounds.

Journalist : Do they agree to that though?

Dana : No, dude that‟s the last thing I‟m thinking about right now, not even it shows out there right now I‟m here.

Journalist : Dana I‟d wanted to ask to Khabib this before he left but do you have any insight into why his father was denied a visa again?

Dana : Did I have any insight into what?

Journalist : Do you have any information about why his father was denied a visa again?

Dana : Why? Who‟s? Khabib? His father didn‟t get a visa, I don‟t even know.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : and also just curious because Conor is sufficiently late how much logistically goes into giving leeway for venue rentals and things like that just to make sure the UFC doesn‟t get dinged too hard on fines?

Dana : What was the question?

Journalist : How much leeway do you plan for logistically speaking for Conor to be late?

Dana : Listen, when I got here at 2:57 they said Conor was on the car and I was on its way here so it says just Conors in the car on his way here he said I‟m not waiting I‟m doing the press conference I‟m a professional and I was here at 3:00.

Journalist : Dana, you‟re taking the situation in stride pretty well right?

Dana : I‟m not giving a shit right know, he‟s listen he just said what he had to say he‟s gonna show up here in a minute and he‟ll answer everybody‟s questions and do whatever you know I mean then tomorrow we‟re gonna have these two face off at the waves they‟re gonna weight in they‟re gonna face off and on Saturday they‟re gonna fight out we‟re here man this is all I care about us so wait into the fight this would we I know that did this fight so big that everybody had a lot of questions and everybody wants to you know he answered his questions he‟s going to come answer his and tomorrow is one of my favorite days leading up to the fight in mid Saturday I can‟t wait to least to walk out of the tunnel.

Journalist : Let you know the world want to see them face off the day, when everybody wants to see them?

Dana : They‟re gonna see him face off tomorrow, one when it really counts one that we both know that they both made weight you know what I mean they‟re both mentally wherever they are after these weight cuts is going into Saturday you cannot deny that the weigh-ins on Friday or the best day other than the fight when they square off and not what I‟m looking forward to, we did this things they‟re gonna answer some questions whatever people happen you know.

Journalist : Is today the biggest day of your professional career?

Dana : Yeah, it‟s definitely one of them I mean there‟s a when you talk about my professional career there‟s been a lot of big days signing the deal with ESPN was a very big day and my career sign of the deal we did with box and many other days but when you talk about fights and

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA the magnitude of a fight and you know the amount of people that are interested the fight definitely.

Journalist : As a fight fan yourself, could you maybe rank the height of this fight compared to maybe other box fights in history or MMA fights?

Dana : Well, if you look at the history of big fights in boxing or any other sport to get over 2 million pay-per-view buys is almost impossible, you look at some of the biggest ones Mayweather and De La Hoya and Mayweather Canelo Tyson and I don‟t even think Tyson and Lennox Lewis broke 2 million didn‟t right Lennox Lewis that Mike Tyson didn‟t break 2 million pay-per-view buys so it‟s big, it‟s very hard to do and this thing is trending to smash 2 million so I would say the hype of this fight is like nothing I‟ve ever seen before.

Journalist : So everyone‟s excited about this fight but we‟ve seen people not make weight we‟ve seen late injuries, how hard is it to come up with that back-up plan and you have a great co-main event, how do you choose which fighter can trust into the main event of one fighter has to pull out?

Dana : Well, then you have to look at that both those guys make weight you know there‟s a lot if the different factors but right now Tony Ferguson is the guy without a doubt if anything should happen obviously Tony Ferguson would be next in line.

Journalist : and if you have to go through that again we‟ve seen we haven‟t seen Conor miss a fight but you can‟t seem to book Khabib versus Tony to save your life right that fight never happens, if you get Khabib versus Tony would you still be satisfied with that as a title main event?

Dana : That‟s not what I want obviously. This fight has to happen we‟ll see what happens dude the way you‟re thinking and that isn‟t even in my head right now I don‟t even want to think like that.

Journalist : Who‟s good asked earlier?

Dana : Go ahead, I was gonna hit your last question and because I‟m done after this.

Journalist : Have you give a chance to Tony Ferguson it all this week, he said that he demeanor a little bit angry?

Dana : I did. Tony always angry so that‟s the way he likes to that things so yeah I‟m totally cool with Tony.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : If he wins he assumed that maybe he‟s next in line on darkness, you know the name that‟s the fight that every?

Dana : We‟ll see.

Journalist : All right thanks.

Conor : What‟s your morning? The other shop back in town will you fuck in love it the traffic is heavy and you‟re not yourself.

Journalist : We appreciate you coming, can you give us an idea what was going on this afternoon for with your late arrival and what‟s just the conscious decision maybe a little bit of a mind game maybe a little psychology?

Conor : You knew why I coming late cause the traffic isn‟t that heavy now bustier McGregor Floyd Dana I don‟t where that little fools is he‟s better off from them anyway you know yourself I bet you he was saying a loaded shit be here he didn‟t say anything the last time so I mean whatever it is but it is focused these things happen.

Journalist : Are you disappointed in our conference I don‟t we you know the face off we were all looking forward to today and maybe that be an opportunity for you to kind of get his head a little bit up in, are your disappointed that you don‟t get to stare him down today?

Conor : Yeah, well I mean don‟t get I didn‟t plan this I tried the yeah you know I said I‟, only a couple minutes late my fuck shit now my backwards couldn‟t you just stay put but whatever I just saw it he doesn‟t want to be around me, he doesn‟t want to be around these people, and that‟s it he said look at the New York and I got a Dana said he while I was in here so that‟s the truth of it so hey it is what it is fucking are giving user look plain face offs and all this year of them over many years so look I‟m here to fight this man Saturday night, he has to make way make sure he goes against now hooker way off and that‟s more important for me I want to make him wait I want them to show up on Saturday night because he has pulled it off which very last minute bit of rush no hospital and all these are polyps so get that money that I saw me and cougar looking the chickens all that he is.

Journalist : Conor, you‟ve accomplished a lot of incredible things in your career already but can you kind of…?

Conor : Lose on the problem whiskey, only and then that comes go beyond with you.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : Can you talk about where this would rank I mean stepping away for two years from the sport coming back facing the undefeated you know unbeatable Russian champion the toughest stylistic matched up for you, where would this rank in terms of your career accomplishments at?

Conor : At 10:09 a Centon abajo and knocking it out of the park I plan on knocking that man‟s nose straight into the nose please that‟s what‟s gonna happen on Saturday night.

Journalist : And last thing for me Conor me, was the break down this fight we see the two opportunities to meet, he may have is grappling in cardio, how much do those two factors into your camp we know you like to break things down to be scientific about it so how much were those a focus of your camp?

Conor : I‟ve been grappling unrest and much heavier man this whole camp 200 pounds is even only yesterday 200 pounds is 25 minutes strength you know I have caught no corners here I am ready for all outcomes.

Journalist : You just say it yourself there the fans were very New York we‟re here today is this the way always should have been?

Conor : This is what I campaign for in New York as well I almost wasn‟t gonna show up to the New York press conference it‟s great to see the fans here now they‟re gonna keep common in common a common and it‟s gonna be a great fight week so I‟m very excited I‟m filled with energy to seeing my people come here and support me and I look forward to going a big and every single year out on Saturday night thank you so much truly from the bottom of your heart it‟s good to be back.

Journalist : Khabib is carrying his belt around Tony Ferguson carrying a belt around, where is your belt?

Conor : Over zero Julio Trujillo letting me cast enemy badgering what a minute but actually do I actually forgot them as I came out but there‟s

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA a blouse gone back to get them but because I was late because that little backwards Koontz printed off the stage I was like fucking or just come on the damn stage let them carry down, let them create a fake belt, let them do this and do that, it‟s all good to me, I‟m here I know who the king is and I‟m gonna show in Saturday night.

Journalist : You mentioned a minute ago about in making way part of memories leaving earlier was because he says he wants to kill on schedule to go and make the way tomorrow if he doesn‟t do we still have a fight?

Conor : You know what matter always avoid going on somewhere, who don‟t give a polish about the way or any that but you must make that way for the championship way but if he doesn‟t we‟ll figure it out when it when we get to it. Knowing point you know that.

Journalist : Yesterday the open work days Khabib had a few things to say about the Irish language and about your army and obviously know you don‟t get the chance correctly for, what do you have to say to those comments that email?

Conor : You should never take information from an informant, you should keep distance from the informant at all times and that‟s putting it for the media that‟s the friendly way upon it. His manager is a fucking snitch terrorist rat and that‟s it I could go with their heavy detail and I will go into every detail, he was pulled off of a flight down from Cairo Egypt to New York City on September 11 2001, he was caught with five passports in his possession, he turned informant and torn on the people that he was working with, he is a well you know what even though her man is in this country but all face and I‟m sure everyone here the earliest people I faced it all the same immigration stuff on the way over my own people are phased in my family it‟s getting stopped at the airport and it‟s not and then you‟ve got this man with such as crazy background valley Abdul Aziz and he‟s working around free, it‟s bitch believed to be honest but hey! Don‟t ever take information from an informant and that‟s what that man is doing, he‟s a rat bastard and I‟m gonna kill him on Saturday night.

Journalist : The fact that the response to the eye response to something he‟s never done before, do you think the presence of all these are responsive kind of Khabib and mentally?

Conor : Fuck him and his mentality, we don‟t give a fuck about him, my heart is black towards this man, towards his team, towards his people, I could see I could truly see inside of that man‟s head and smile, I don‟t give a fuck about him or his people like I said that is way deeper

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA than just fully on side ain‟t no you so it is I‟m here I‟m gonna sell this thing all the way from myself and then see what happens after that.

Journalist : They said you couldn‟t get an outlaws had, they said you couldn‟t get any out Brazos head. Do you think that Khabib ten right now he‟s obviously not here for the press conference, where are you at with that?

Conor : Where‟s he at, he‟s breathed an hour here I mean it‟s clear as day but again I don‟t really care about his mentality idea what‟s he‟s doing and I do not give a fuck, I am ruthless here I am coming to put a hole in this man‟s skull did my knuckle in through his orbital bone and that‟s what I am going do.

Journalist : You have been said this is a very personal fight, you have been very gracious before and went in wins and also in defeats, do you see yourself being able to kind of squash the beef after fighting with him that you shake your hand after the fight on Saturday night?

Conor : Fuck peace, there will never be peace here I always say you should aim for peace but you can‟t aim for peace aim between the eyes, and that‟s it I‟m gonna aim right between that man choices and this never over never ever, ever over.

Journalist : Let‟s talk about whiskey for one second we have the crowd seems to be very pleased about that but your whiskey hasn‟t been announced in Israel has it arrived yet and I wonder if it‟s good because it‟s some places I‟ve read in the business insider it‟s…

Conor : have a drink of it now what you think there‟s always gonna be big roaches and people I hate and this is a and it comes with the territory when they‟re at their top of their game trust me it is the tastiest all right explicitly there is on the planet, all you put in loving I know you don‟t give up bollocks what anyone says I‟m not even trying to sell just have a shit of it just take all the jelly enjoy yourself now not you to smell you get keep me America putting in a negative machine you asked for polish me. This is for your each people but half whether we count the tree I want that everyone in filled in the stream and then chopping their loans fuck it damn it here brothers.

Journalist : With the whiskey it seems like it is selling open a lot of different places especially here in Las Vegas, have you been getting any numbers back on how well?

Conor : It‟s exceeded expectations it‟s actually following the people like I made involved a couple people that are involved in the liquor business their entire life and they‟ve never seen anything like this and I‟ve just

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA got to thank my fans and my people who are supporting me that love that they‟ve shown me for this say I wish to myself I‟m actually going away, it has story roughly we‟re trying to meet with the man now so we‟re in a stage where we‟re trying to get the glass sweet more class created and keep the whiskey flowing so bear with us put that itself apart. I tell you what though it‟s thrown in Las Vegas that is for you we know that, we got that side.

Journalist : You talk about approaching he‟s fight like they‟re wars at the last press conference just so much information about Khabib that a lot of people I guess it must have really entrenched in the sport don‟t really know about. Is that part of the art of rewards you is learning as much information about your opponent as possible?

Conor : I just observed I know if we shut everyone throws I know every move everyone makes that‟s it I just keep my eyes on the game that I run that‟s it I overlooked my empire with a heart bullying so that‟s it.

Journalist : And after the open worked out yesterday Khabib started to talk about stuff from your past, what do you think that means that if that he went to?

Conor : Sorry, what was you say?

Journalist : What do you think it means that he went to them and started looking into informant?

Conor : I don‟t care what he said whatever it‟s all good that may mean it‟s closing in on fight time you just cook yourself and that sonic you smelly Pakistani rat beat it in 40th highway and beat it on shiny as I fucking for you that‟s it, say what you want though we don‟t give up bollocks and I fought under the pause enough to stay here with a couple of minutes actually he got an hour here, he spotted chance acquaintance and that‟s it like in the fight I believe he‟ll spot an exit and he‟ll try and take it but I won‟t let it happen.

Journalist : Dana was worried for a while that you wouldn‟t come back it made too much money he‟s mentioned falling out of love with the game, are you here to say the place is bustling to have you back?

Conor : Yes, that‟s why I‟m here, the fan to lower the energy you know, I can‟t you can‟t beat that truly you can‟t be that it‟s as addictive as these tasty plumbers who have whiskey but you never charge so good about which also a good thing about money but all sorts of better than money more money so that‟s here there‟s a lot more coming in and the fight I just look to be here and do what I‟m doing and I‟m just gonna

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA keep them and that‟s here I‟m only two years I‟m a it‟s just gone I‟m very, very young in the game although I‟ve been around that I‟m experienced I‟m only a young for your compared to the rest in the game so I‟m here for another good one yet.

Journalist : You said this is never gonna be over with Khabib, do you see yourself maybe fighting him more than once or if you get the devastating knockout you say you‟re gonna go is this the end in terms of?

Conor : Let‟s see what happens I don‟t know, we‟ll see, I‟d like to fight Ali, I‟d like to find out rap acid, if I hear him somewhere what‟s he when I love him non-stop I hear he‟s had a few fights I may want to fight I may want to spark Khabib and headline that Madison Square Garden at card next one is that November 1, 3rd November but or so that‟s less than a month away from this one I may want to do that one that‟s what I‟m thinking of to be honest I see what happened.

Journalist : Khabib said how he would choke you out, did you think about that?

Conor : Lovely, get a full of shit and snitch an hour audience clapping animal so let‟s go.

Journalist : I want to ask about your legacy we already talked to Dana he said he thinks you‟re the biggest star in combat sports in the world right now, and that‟s hard to argue with the numbers that you‟re generating the fans that are here from all over the world, where does your legacy go from here when it‟s already so big everything that‟s already happened in your career?

Conor : Just keep there on my team keep showing up looking for and not give it at the end of the day when I sign up you‟re gonna get a fight that‟s known for a fact I come out fast I come out aggressive and it‟s a damn fight there‟s no holding there‟s none of this stalling it‟s a straight knock so that‟s it I‟m gonna keep doing what I‟m doing my legacy assets down to a watch having to force the only everything is I just keep on going see what happens.

Journalist : What would you describe your level of hunger to be now that you don‟t have to worry about money you have your hands and a lot of different projects and might Khabib hungrier than you?

Conor : No, I‟m starving for this man‟s head I am gonna eat him alive in here and I don‟t give up all up so there‟s no way this man sweeter than me there‟s nobody that‟s hunger to me in this game, we don‟t stop unto on it, I‟m 24/7 on this game so that‟s it.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Journalist : Back in the day, you used to say that you want to come to Las Vegas maybe a month before or 40 days before to get used to the climate and to get away with the jetlag, how come you haven‟t done?

Conor : It‟s hard to leave Berlin when you‟re in it it‟s a damn good place to be the air to believe with everything it‟s my home it‟s where I‟m from so I spent a lot more time in Harlan this time but I‟ve also spent I‟ve also done the rounds in Las Vegas, I‟ve been here for many months on end so I‟m experienced with the Las Vegas climate also so I said I‟ll stay in my beautiful home of Arlen and then come out a little bit layer and that‟s what we don‟t I feel great I‟m energized up I‟m a day from the weight-ins of lots of energy so I‟m very happy with it, we don‟t inherently.

Journalist : A couple of weeks ago you looked Khabib into the eye and you‟re going to do that again tomorrow, what would you try, what did you see back then and what do you think you will see tomorrow?

Conor : I saw a man that does not want to be here to be honest and like you saw they got out quick stuff so that‟s what I saw but you can‟t warn now you‟re right now it‟s in front of you so I‟m excited about that.

Journalist : Jose Aldo was also a fighter that hadn‟t lose an eye in a very long time but could be passed and he came out very ignorant aggressively in the first round, do you think we would see something similar with Khabib?

Conor : He‟s afraid of a clatter make no mistake he does not like to be him, he has nervous reactions he‟s flincher we call them and in that notice ranks that‟s what he is, so he‟s also easily backed up so I‟m very prepared and very aware of what to expect in here and it ain‟t nothing that phases me.

Journalist : Conor, what‟re you doing?

Conor : What‟s up man!

Journalist : Thanks.

Conor : Good, how are you?

Journalist : Very good, thanks. You‟ve got one what do you think you‟ll ever need to spend you‟ve done it, your inner forth a little bit. Look at all the funds you have here. We are the artists members of the media want to see you for you can‟t open it again when is that gonna happen?

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Conor : So I said the other day like I said is the terminal for you man I know the situation with the crow park stadiums and no we want to do big but I mean I tell you what I‟d fight in the ring soil but putting the rings hood on cell check our load when I made my boxing debut or my MMA debut also I made it a ring so club next to the National Stadium and if it‟s a pole and if it‟s about 50 people but I forget waiting and that‟s I mean you gotta ask these guys here you got a stain and these guys because I am certainly I say the most fine in Ireland before I call out there.

Journalist : Where there‟s a will there‟s a way Conor, you‟ve got the will?

Conor : Thank you, sir. I appreciate that and you‟re dead wrong the deadly.

Journalist : He‟s like recently about how the sport needs more weight classes you sort of compared it to boxing, somebody in your position you know a push from you would sort of mean a lot in that it‟s usually doesn‟t seem too keen on 165 but with guys that 90s does employ a push me for that how necessary you think 165 is to the UFC?

Conor : I think it would benefit we have more champions I think with an overly good health help athletes in their weight coach situation I don‟t think it‟s the be- all end-all I think when people are campaigning for these weight classes and campaigner for anything in general with the UFC or anything they usually use them more of a complaining tactic or like they don‟t do this work and it‟s like a whining tactic. I think you need to sit down and discuss all aspects of it I mean what the pros and what the cons are and the figure it out I personally believe it would benefit having more belts on the line potential Julie wait Trevor wait champions extension it would make Martha to pay more juices pay-per-views and I feel we could sit down and figure it out and we can here we get we could get to a solution. I am far at the 135, 165, 175, 185, 195, 205, and then we‟ll see where we‟re at.

Journalist : Not to look far in the future but would you potentially see your near future at 165 if that was a possibility to the pitchers maybe another belt?

Conor : I mean have you followed my career mate, oh you could go 180 boy, don‟t give a bollocks tonight is avoid there and interest me I‟ll take it so I would like the 165 pound belt I think but I‟d also like the 170 pounds belt so I mean we‟ll see what happens. I think the game is going through a stage where we‟re looking to you we‟re looking to make it better forward for the athletes who are competing and the struggles of the weight class and then also the more belts we party but

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA I understand like functions the way boxing has gone and things like that does there‟s like hesitation to it but again I think if we sit down if we map out the pros and cons I think we can come to a correct solution that benefits everyone.

Dana : I‟m gonna take one more question.

Journalist : Dana said that it feels like your mental warfare game is actually surpassed even Muhammad Ali curious like your thoughts about that comment?

Conor : Thank you so much Dana I appreciate the kind of words I true I also have nothing but good things to say about you, you‟re an OG of the fight game the work you put in over the year to get the sport today each pinnacle honestly you don‟t get enough fat that you truly deserve even this new ESPN deal that we‟ve gone with when you‟re Enzo found out and I was like wow! That‟s I did I wasn‟t sure what happened and everybody ESPN deal go on it‟s like you‟re a true pioneer and an OG in the fight game and it‟s and honor to be your peer deal business with you I know you‟ve had a ups and downs and I wore lace gear put it‟s an honor for that, alright thank you so much, thank you for my awards and always you tell the truth no matter what you tell the truth like me also so he‟s saying about Muhammad Ali in the medal offer I respect and appreciate that board Muhammad Ali is a special individual I do not I am not even close to that man‟s brain that‟s the things he don‟t wear his career he is a special individual and to be even have my name next to that man is like is truly a truly proud moment for me, thank you all, but I cannot compare myself for that great honor.

Journalist : This plays where do two million pay-per-views buys, how much money could you stand to make it two million?

Conor : I know it‟s you. We‟re estimating around 3 to 3,5 million I‟d say are closing around the 50 million dollar mark so foreign mixed martial artist to make 50 million dollars in the mixed martial arts belt it‟s quite breathtaking I‟ve got to thank my management stable president of sports management I‟ve got the thank Dana White I‟ve got the thank and Frank D schools me in the game, I knew where and the new owners and W, what‟s the name WM e IMT those guys as well I haven‟t really read them that much but they‟d be good to me so far. Marion though life is good I made the teeth where we have come from when I fought like I said the night bar Nate Diaz he was on 20 the first time he was on 20 couses to show at 20.000 to win the game has sung to so much so on so many new hikes so quickly

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA and we‟re all just trying to keep up and catch up and it‟s a great time to be involved in the sport front from myself for the fires for further promoters for the managers for the median attendance for the fans for everyone times are good, so let‟s enjoy these momentous occasions.

Dana : You want to ask question right? Go ahead buddy.

Journalist : How long until your billionaire Conor grabs on the whiskey?

Conor : Thank you so much I‟d say it that well I‟m 30 years of age and say by 25 I‟ll be 35 yes 25 good luck thank you sir, I appreciate that.

Journalist : 25?

Conor : Yes.

Journalist : Ok, good luck.

Conor : Thank you so much, sir.

Dana : Thank you guys for coming. Conor do some photo right here in front of the podium.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA
