Dear friends-

Each year the Society for the Propagation of the Faith asks each parish in the Archdiocese to host a visiting missionary. We all know that the economy in the United States has its problems at the present moment and that there are many people in our own country who are unemployed.

Having said that, there are many places in our world where conditions are so much worse. There are countries where people live without the things we so often take for granted—clean water; food; basic medicines; even rudimentary health care. Many people in parts of the world are born into poverty and suffering and will die in poverty and suffering. In parts of our world today, there are parents who will not see their children survive to adulthood because of poverty, disease, and violence.

It is in those often forgotten places that so many missionaries labor day in and day out. Sometimes we consider actors, musicians, or athletes as role models and heroes. I think these missionaries are true heroes whose hard work often goes unnoticed and unheralded. They depend on us if they are to be able to continue in their vital role.

Our turn to host this appeal is the weekend of July 3-4. We will have envelopes and donation baskets, if you wish to help. I wanted to give you a “heads up” since—believe it or not—July 3 and 4 is next weekend.

On Saturday June 26th, we hosted the 31st “Special Needs Day” here at the parish. This is a wonderful day when we host some special people from our community and beyond. I always feel that there is an aura of goodness on that day, because we are truly doing the work of Jesus as we share our property and care with those people who have a very special place in God’s heart.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers—some of whom have been part of this program since the beginning—some who are volunteering for the first time. I’m sure that you would agree that you received much more than you gave. Let us hope that as a parish we can continue this good work and many other good works like it as we try to continue the work of Jesus in our corner of the Lord’s vineyard.
