God gave Dwight Beacham the first two gifts and the Allen Organ Company gave him the opportunity to use what God gave him to create the sound that was always in his head. Dwight Beacham was a theatre organist who literally performed all over the United States and in several foreign countries, was a church organist from the age of 14, a music teacher, a choral director, and a groundbreaking organ designer, in a career that spanned over sixty years. The difference he made in the organ world is remarkable. Dwight was born in Glendale, California, May 14, 1946. His early years were spent in northeast Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. His family went to church every Sunday, just like most kids growing up in the ’50s, he played games with the neighborhood kids in the backyard and the family took annual vacation trips to Colorado chasing Narrow Gauge trains...his father loved those trains! As fate would have it, one year in the early ’50s Dwight’s father Wasn’t he cute? used his Christmas bonus to buy a Hi-Fi system. Remarkably, the system came with two George Wright LPs.

The dullness of the organ caused many listeners to tune out programs broadcast from Jubilee Chapel, although those who were permitted to be in the studio when the organ was being played have noted that its quality of tone was decidedly better than when hearing it over the airwaves. Whether this factor was enough to cause the BBC to sell the organ, or if the price offered by Dutch interests brought about its departure from England is not known. But the organ was sold and moved to a church in Holland, ostensibly for broadcasting over Radio Hilversum, Then, as the story goes, the two theatre organists who could play the instru ment died and the broadcasts apparently ended. Again, it is not re corded if the organ was played for church services, although it would seem likely that it was. There is little doubt that it was specifically what the church wanted, and when San Diegan Preston M. Fleet made an offer for it, very short time elapsed until it was on the high seas bound for America and the Moller factory at Hagerstown, Maryland.

For the first Mormon pioneers, the route to their Zion passed through the area that became Summit County. The county continues to serve as a major transportation corridor, carrying transcontinental freeways and railroads. From its mountains spring four major rivers, providing water that sus­ tains much of northern Utah. Its mines have produced silver, gold, lead, and zinc worth hundreds of millions of dollars, money that helped build the state and the Intermountain West. By 1997 its petroleum deposits had yielded almost 170 million barrels of oil. Its three large ski resorts have helped define Utah as a major international destination for skiers and the county as a popular recre­ ational area for Utahns, especially those liv­ ing along the Wasatch Front. These themes—as well as many others— are woven here into a colorful tapestry that is the history of Summit County.
