Congregational History Society Magazine, Vol. 8, No 3, 2017 1 EDITORIAL We welcome Stephen Tomkins to our pages. He gives here a consideration of the Elizabethan separatists, in this 450th anniversary year of the detention by the sheriff’s officers of some members of the congregation meeting then at Plumbers Hall, London. In addition this issue of our CHS Magazine includes the promised piece on history and preaching to which many of our readers in this country and abroad contributed. Although this is merely a qualitative study, we hope that it may offer support to those who argue for the retention of specialist historians within ministerial training programmes. Certainly its evidence suggests that those who dismiss history as of little or no use to the preacher will lack support from many practitioners. -

LEVY Preface NE of the pleasant by-products of doing research O work is the realization of how generously help has been given when it was needed. The author owes much to many people who proved their interest in this attempt to see America's past a little more clearly. The Institute of Early American History and Culture gave two grants that enabled me to devote a sabbatical leave and a summer to direct searching of colony and church records. Librarians and archivists have been cooperative beyond the call of regular duty. Not a few scholars have read the study in whole or part to give me the benefit of their knowledge and judgment. I must mention among them Professor Josephine W, Bennett of the Hunter College English Department; Miss Madge McLain, formerly of the Hunter College Classics Department; the late Dr. William W. Rockwell, Librarian Emeritus of Union Theological Seminary, whose vast scholarship and his willingness to share it will remain with all who knew him as long as they have memories; Professor Matthew Spinka of the Hartford Theological Sem- inary; and my mother, who did not allow illness to keep her from listening attentively and critically as I read to her chapter after chapter. New England Church ' Relations^ and Continuity in Early Congregational History BY RAYMOND PIIINEAS STEARNS AND DAVID HOLMKS BRAWNER N HIS ground-breaking study of early Engiish dissenters, I ChampHn Barrage announced a half-century ago that the "beginnings of Independency or Congregationalism, are not, as heretofore, traced to the Brownists or Barrowists, but to the Congregational Puritanism advocated by Henry Jacob and William Bradshaw about 1604 and 1605, and later put in practice by various Puritan congregations on the Continent, when it was brought to America and back into England."^ This evolutionary scheme, as developed and substantiated in later studies, has by now acquired considerable authority. The late Perry Miller's Orthodoxy in Aíassachiíseits was ''a development of the hints" received from Burrage and others; Charles M. RELIGIOUS CONTROVERSIES IN PLYMOUTH COLONY by Richard Howland Maxwell Pilgrim Society Note, Series Two, June 1996 Plymouth Colony was born out of a religious controversy and was not itself immune to such controversies. The purpose of this lecture is to consider some of those controversies in order that we may better understand the Pilgrims, their attitudes, and their relationships with some other individuals and groups. We will start with some background concerns central to the identity of the Plymouth group, then move on to consider the relationships the Pilgrims had with some of their clergy, and focus finally on two groups who were not welcome in Plymouth or any other English colony. I wish to begin with two pairs of terms and concepts about which we seem often to find confusion. The first pair is Pilgrims and Puritans - or more accurately, Separatists and other Puritans. Some of you have heard me expound on this theme before, and it is not my intention to repeat that presentation. To understand the Pilgrims, however, we need to understand the religious and cultural background from which they came. We need also, I think, to understand something about their neighbors to the north, who shared their background but differed with them in some important ways. That shared background is the Puritan movement within the Church of England. The most succinct description of Puritanism that I have read comes from Bradford Smith’s biography titled Bradford of Plymouth. Smith wrote: Puritanism in England was essentially a movement within the established church for the purifying of that church - for ministers godly and able to teach, for a simplifying of ritual, for a return to the virtues of primitive Christianity. -

Pilgrim Homes In Leiden Pilgrim Homes In Leiden By Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs Excerpt The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 154 pgs. 413-445 When the English Separatists who were to become famous as America’s Pilgrims settled in Leiden in 1609, one of the first problems they had to solve was housing. Although for most of them their solutions during the first months of the Leiden exile are unrecorded, that in itself implies that they were renters. Eventually several bought houses. Property transactions in Leiden were carefully recorded, and the records are preserved. The pilgrims who bought or sold houses before 1620 were William Robinson, William Jepson, John Robinson, Henry Wood, Jane White, Roger Wilson, Robert Cushman, William Bradford, William Minter, Richard Masterson, John, Ellis, John Kebel, Henry Coleth (or Collet), William Bristsman (or Bridgeman), RogerSymons, Phineas Edwards, Henry Richard, Bartholomew Smith, John Carpenter, and Thomas Rogers, besides Jan Allaert whose connection with the Pilgrim congregation is less certain, but who might be John Allerton. Various Pilgrims rented houses in more or less identifiable locations. The Leiden betrothal records, as well as other types of documents, identify some people’s place of residence. Several Pilgrims lived “in Douveren” or near it: Elizabeth Pettinger, William Pontus, Jane Peck, John Spooner, and John Jennings. Dover was the name of a brewery situated between the Haarlemmerstraat, a major street running through the northern third of the city and the Oude Rijn (the north branch of the Rijn, or Rhine River), midway along the block bounded by the Hooijgracht bridge to the east and the Hooglandsekerksteeg to the west. -

THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -

PILGRIM AND PURITAN: A DELICATE DISTINCTION by Richard Howland Maxwell Pilgrim Society Note, Series Two, March 2003 Near the end of his term as president of the United States, Ronald Reagan delivered an address in which he sought to call the American people back to the values of - in his words - "that old Pilgrim, John Winthrop." Reagan's successor in office, George Bush - who, according to some, ought to have known better because he is a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Howland - compounded the historical error in his 1992 Thanksgiving proclamation by saying, "This Thanksgiving… let us renew the solemn commitment that John Winthrop and his fellow Pilgrims made more than 100 years ago." Mr. Bush not only had the Pilgrims and Puritans confused; he missed their dates by more than two centuries! And a bit more recently, the November 1994 issue of the Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine suggested that we include in our Thanksgiving that year "the Puritans in Plymouth, Massachusetts from whom most of our traditions come." The same article later described the "first Thanksgiving" as "the 1621 feast to celebrate the first long winter the Puritans survived in the New World." These illustrations of the apparent ignorance of many Americans concerning at least some parts of our own history have produced among some of us Mayflower descendants an emotional reaction. We become highly incensed if someone refers to the Plymouth settlers as "Puritans," and we become downright angry at the thought that Winthrop might be called a "Pilgrim." The purpose of my presentation today is to examine with as little prejudice as possible the shared history, similarities, and differences between the two groups we commonly call Pilgrims and Puritans. -
