Abbeys’ path around Rome The word “Abbey” was once used for “abbot” meaning the person at the head of and responsible for a community of monks. Later it came to mean the communities themselves, particularly those in the west that followed the Rule of St Benedict. Finally the word was used to indicate the buildings in which the communities lived, especially the Church and also included the patrimony, which was often very rich. The deep religious feelings of the people of Latium gave birth to many important abbeys. Some, like those of Montecassino and Farfa, are among the first examples in Italy of buildings designed around the open space of the cloister. Proceed to Alatri, characterized by its belt of Polygonal walls, which has five access gates. Departure to Veroli, visit to the Basilica of S. Salome (famous for its Holy Stair, a place of special religious interest, due to the fact it enjoys the same privilege as the Lateran Steps), the Cathedral of S. Andrea.
