Sunday, July 8, 2018 GULF TIMES 9 SPORT COMMUNITY Ascending rock climbers with disabilities in Germany An amputated leg, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy are no hurdle for so-called paraclimbers in Germany. After recently holding the first national competition, one association is working towards adding competitive rock climbing to the international Paralympics sports. By Larissa Schwedes

hen Martin Seeger abseils down the last few metres, he doesn’t land on his feet. Instead, his wheelchair is waiting for him at the Wbottom of the climbing wall. When he was born, he didn’t get enough oxygen, so he now suffers from cerebral palsy. But that doesn’t stop him from climbing. Seeger, who studied computer science and has been working for 20 years as a software developer at a firm in Germany, usually writes down his thoughts because he doesn’t always speak that clearly. And in his free time, he climbs steep walls. “I see climbing as great training for maintaining my mobility. And you meet impressive people,” he says. Many of the people he’s referring to are members of the Karlsruhe Alpine Association’s paraclimbing group. Some 30 adults and 10 teenagers meet every week at the climbing hall in the south- western German city: Some use their metal prosthetic limbs to climb the wall, while others pull up their legs with their arms, and still others feel their way up the wall without sight. “Sometimes it’s not so easy to switch between the different disabilities” on the wall, says Uwe Benitz, who trained as a climbing instructor specialising in the disabled a few years ago. The team was recently joined by nearly 70 climbers with disabiliteis from all over Germany, ranging in age from 14 to 72, for the country’s fi rst-ever paraclimbing competition. RISING UP: The wheelchairs of Steff en Tillmans, right, and Martin Seeger wait at the bottom of a climbing wall in the German city of Karlsruhe.
