FACULTY NEWS Professor Shelvin Singer presented a paper on guilty pleas at a seminar for judges, sponsored by the 's Traffic Institute, in Chicago, on October 11, 1983.

JUDICIAL EXTERN PROGRAM - SPRING 1984 SEMESTER The Judicial Extern Program, a three credit course, is open to second and third year law school students. Judicial Externs do legal research and writing for course credit for federal court judges. The course requires 12 -~15 hours per week during the spring term for three credits. Judges.in the federal courts select their externs, and all applicants are in competition. Starting this term, credit will be granted forexternships with federal court judges and magistrates only. The two hour externship course at the state courts has been discontinued. Visiting students at Chicago-Kent must see Dean David Rudstein before applying for this course. Students are cautioned against arranging their own externshLps without consulting first with Judith Saunder s i Students are limited to a maximum of two semesters and sLx credit hours of a judicial externship, general externship, or a combination of the two. Students will not be allowed to register"" for ,the judicial extern course until they have a confirmed extern placement. Because these placement decisions are not usually made until Decem~er or January for the spring semester, students will not be able to pre-register for this course. Those interested in applying should obtain a copy of the COl.lrse d~scription and application form in the Placement Office, room 321, after October 20, 1983. Applications to the judges must be submitted to Mary Kralovec in the Placement Office by 5 p.m., Friday, November 4, 1983.

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS NEEDED A law student with computer programming ·expertise is needed to join a team of programmers working with Ralph Brill, Debbie Holdstein, and Aviva .. }leridian Kaiser on a book and series of computer exercises. SPRING 1984 SCHEDULE Dean Rudstein will hold two meetings on Tuesday , October' 25, .todiscuss :the.tenta­ tive class schedule for spring 1984. The day division schedule will be discussed from 12 - 1 p.m. in room 101; the evening division schedulewi1l be discussed from 5 - 6 p.m. in room 101. All students are encouraged to attend. Copies of the tentative schedule will be available by Thursday, October 20.

GRADUATION PICTURES Pictures of January 1984 graduates will be taken on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Th~rs­ day, October 25, 26, and 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., in room 309. Graduation invitations will be available and cap and gown cards should be completed at those times. -2-

PLACEMENT NEWS Resume· Preparation Workshop Learn how to construct a resume and' a cover letter. This program is aimed speci­ fically for first year students but all are welcome to attend. There will be two sessions, each covering the same materials: Tuesday, October 18, 12 noon, room 324, and Wednesday, October 19, 5 p.m., room 325. Conference on Law Career Options The Young Lawyers Section of the Chicago Bar Association will hold its Fifth Annual Conference on Law Career Options on Saturday, October 22, 1983, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance. Flyers about this conference are on the second floor table near the elevators and in the Career Planning and Placement Office. Pick one up now. Ou-r new CBA. representative is Tom CerOne. He can be contacted in the SBA office on the second floor. Fall Interview Update Information about the Fall Interview Program, including assigned interview rooms, names of recruiters, appointment times .and changes·in schedules are always posted on the bulletin board outside of the Career Planning and Placement Office. The number of students participating in this program is very large. Americans United for Life Internship for Summer 1984 The American's United for Life Legal Defense Fund is now accepting applications for its 1984 summer internship program. Students in their first or second year of law school may apply. Information is available in the Career Plannin~ and Placement Officeo See Handout #6.

KARGMAN LOAN FUND There is a small amount of long-term loan money available in the Wallace I. Kargma~ loan fund to be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. Students who are interested in being considered for the loan should submit a letter to Dean Kleiman, room 306., stating their qualification, ~ later than October 28, 1983.

EXAM REVIEW Exam Review for Professor Barnett's Contracts II (Spring, 1983): All those who wish to read their exam·answers may sign up to do so. A sign up sheet will be posted outside room. 312. You must sign up if you wish to attend the review ses­ sion which will be held on Friday, October 28th at 5 p.m. You· must attend the review session if you wish to schedule an individual review of your exam. Indivi­ dual reviews will be scheduled on Friday afternoons, beginning November 4th. .. -3-

LEGAL SERVICES CENTER SPRING REGISTRATION ~:INTRODUCTION TO THE CENTER ON OCTOBER 18 Registration for Legal Services Center for the spring 1984 semester began on October 15. Students interested in the Legal Services Center should attend a meeting to learn more about the programs being off ered. Meetings will be held on Tuesday, October 18, from 1 - 1:45 p.m., in room 102 and from 5:15 - 5:45 p.m., in room 641. Center professors will be available to discuss the program and answer questions. The Center offers beginning and continuing classes in Civil Practice and Criminal Litigatio~, and an Advanced Clinical Externship Program for students who have successfully completed one or two semesters of LSC. Applications to register for Legal Services Center classes for spring 1984 are available in room 601, and on the second floor. They must be completed and turned in to Mrs. Battle in room 601, by 5 p.rno, Friday, October 28, 1983. All students, including those taking LSC this semester, as well as students from the fall waiting list, must submit an application for spring. The applications must be turn~d in for LSC I, LSC II, Advanced LSC, and the Advanced Clinical Extern~ ship Program. MOOT COURT Reed Millsaps will be an emergency replacement for ~~rk King as a member of one National Moot Court team. , Chicago-Kent's team iII the Benton Moot Court· competition, sponsored by John Marshall Law School, will be Cory McAlpine, Roxanne Mizner and Judy St. Pierre.

TOUCH FOOTBALL .There will be two football games at Gra~t Park, on the fields located at 11th and Columbus Drive, where the old bandshell was located, on Friday, October 21, at 3 p.m. Chicago-Kent Freshmen,. with Professor Brill coaching, will play the senior men, with Professor Sodaro coaching. First year women will pay senior women. Buses will leave Chicago-Kent at 2:15 and 2:30 .to Grant Park. There will be no buses back, but there will be a big "after the game" party at the Aquarius on the corner of ~1adison and Wells starting one-half hour after the games are over. CHICAGO~KENT CO~fPUTER SOCIETY The newly formed Chicago Kent Computer Society will meet for the first time on Thursday, October 20. Two sessions are being held so that day and evening students will be able to participate. The day session will be held at 12 noon, in room 645, and the evening session at 5 p.m. in room 6420 Everyone is invited. No knowledge of computers is needed in order to participateo
