13 2003 OUTLOOK

An outstanding senior class will lead the 2003 Tufts Uni- versity baseball team. Head Coach John Casey’s Jumbos won a team-record 27 games last year, including two while playing in the NCAA New England Regional Tournament on Cape Cod. Stacked with veteran talent, Tufts should again be among the region’s best this year.

Tufts was ranked 27th in the final national poll and third in the New England rankings last season. Right fielder Dan Callahan, who led the team in hitting, was drafted by the world champion Arizona Diamondbacks and played Class A ball in South Bend, Ind. First baseman Tim Ayres, a three-year starter and middle- of-the-order hitter, also leaves a hole to fill. This team with mul- Coach Casey and the team tiple professional prospects should continue to roll. look on from the dugout The pitching staff, whose 3.34 was one of the nation’s best last year, is led by seniors Jon Lee and Dave Martin. Lee, the 2001 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year, overcame an early injury to finish 7-1 with a 3.26 era last spring. He’s 20-4 in his career. Martin was the conference’s top pitcher with a 5-1 record and 0.85 era before he was lost for the season with an injury. Senior Mike Byron was the team’s top reliever in ’02, making 11 appearances out of the bullpen. Junior Randy Newsom won six games, including a stand-out effort in an NCAA tournament win over Suffolk.

The offense is also be led by senior all-stars. Zupancic slugged 11 home runs and scored 47 runs last season, both team records. Shapiro is fluid at shortstop and hit .343 with seven home runs and 40 runs batted in. Both were All-New England First Team selections last spring and should bring scouts to Huskins Field this season. Senior Jon Herbert is also a three-year starter who has played infield and outfield. Catcher Bob Kenny and second baseman Frank Dinucci started as freshman a year ago and are future team leaders. Juniors Adam Kacamburas and Greg Hickey were also regulars on last season’s NCAA team. Junior infielder Nick Palange (.379 in ’02) and junior outfielder Drew Blewett could step into bigger roles.

Tufts is strong up the middle, the sign of a good defensive team. Zupancic, Shapiro, Herbert and Dinucci can steal bases. Casey, who won his 300th game with the team last year, coaches the team for the 20th year. With 74 wins in the last three years, the team has everything in place for continued success.

18 2002 REVIEW The Jumbos 2002 campaign was one of the most successful in Tufts history. The team finished with a record 27 wins, besting the previous year’s total of 26. The Jumbos defended their NESCAC Eastern Division championship with a 10-1 record, and went on to win the NESCAC championship, earning a spot in the NCAA Northeast Regional. The team finished with an impressive 27-10-1 record.

The season began with a solid spring trip, with the Jumbos going 6-3-1 highlighted by wins over Randolph-Macon, Apprentice and Virginia Wesleyan, and a hard-fought tie with #2 ranked Methodist. The team continued their stellar play up north, going 17-4 through the rest of the regular season. The pitching staff combined for an outstanding 3.34 ERA while throwing 15 complete games. The offense was also imposing, with a .318 team average, and setting team records in Hits, Runs, and RBI’s.

After winning the NESCAC tournament, the Jumbos received the #3 seed in the NCAA Northeast Regional played on Cape Cod. The Jumbos performed well, with victories over Brandies and Suffolk, and finishing in 3rd place. In the final NCAA Div III poll, the Jumbos were ranked 27th.

Many Jumbos were honored for their successful season. Senior Dan Callahan, and Juniors Evan Zupancic, Brian Shapiro, and Dave Martin were named All-NESCAC. Shapiro tied the career record for Saves, and Zupancic set records for both Runs and Home Runs in a season. Dan Callahan, meanwhile, finished his career with his name all over the Tufts record books. Dan set single-season records for RBI’s, Doubles and Triples, and set career marks for Hits, Runs, Doubles, RBI’s and Triples. Dan was also chosen in the 21st round of the 2002 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, playing last season for the Class A South Bend Silver Hawks. In a time-honored tradition established by great teams before them, the 2002 Jumbos continued the programs winning ways, and helped set the standard for future Jumbo teams. 2002 STATS

Tufts Baseball Alumni Game/Alumni Tournament Weekend of May 2nd Dear Jumbo Fans,

We are once again planning our alumni weekend this May. The Tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2003 and the 14th Annual Alumni Game is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2003 at 12:00 noon, followed by a Sunday doubleheader against Babson. We are hoping for a great turnout again. All you need to bring is your glove and all your talents. It has certainly been a very enjoyable day for all involved. Our players would love the opportunity to thank you personally for all you’ve done and I think you’d really enjoy meeting the kids. You’ll also have the chance to play on our beautiful Huskins Field and cheer each other on from a warm dugout. In addition, you’ll be able to relive all those great memories from your playing days. After the game we’ll have a cookout and swap some tall tales. I’d like to encourage all of you to attend our alumni weekend. We’d love to have you at both functions but if you can only make one, that’s great too. If you can’t this year, circle your calendar for ’04. I’m really looking forward to seeing and talking to all of you. We’ll be sending out letters in March so check your mail, but if you didn’t receive anything yet, call us in the office at (617)627- 2330 and we will be glad to mail out information right away. Thanks for all your support and we’ll see you soon! Sincerely, Coach Casey John Casey Head Baseball Coach
