It also provides examples of sporting heritage programmes currently offered to support the curriculum in museum and sport settings across the country The physicality and accessibility of sport cuts through barriers of language, religion, class and culture. There is growing evidence that sporting heritage, taught as part of the school curriculum, is a very effective medium for motivating under-achieving pupils. Whilst the main academic focus of sporting heritage is history – most pertinently local history – it can also provide an effective springboard to cross-curricular learning and to sports participation. Many of our sports clubs were founded in the 19th century and, from Premier League football clubs to village cricket and rugby clubs, are often the best examples of living history in their communities, regularly attracting more people onto their premises and more interest in their fortunes than any other local organisations of comparable age.

  • Heavenly Readings
Heavenly Readings: A study of the place of liturgical literacy within a UK Muslim community and its relationship to other literacy practices Andrey Rosowsky Thesis Submitted for the Degree of PhD School of Education University of Sheffield Volume One May 2004 Abstract This study is concerned with the description and discussion of liturgical literacy, in its Islamic form, in a UK Muslim community. Liturgical literacy is often marginalised, misunderstood and disparaged. The central thesis of this study seeks to demystify this literacy practice by subjecting it to a thick and detailed description, and, necessarily, includes an analysis of the multilingual and multiliterate nature of this community which is both complex and problematic. The data is explored to illustrate the complex role liturgical literacy plays within the community and elicits the tension that exists between liturgical literacy and other languages and literacies, and the intergenerational tension over pedagogy. This thesis presents liturgical literacy as an intense, vibrant and esteemed cultural practice, and seeks to lay to rest the pejorative notion that it is predominantly a matter of rote learning with little or no recourse to meaning. Section I of this thesis consists of a definition of liturgical literacy and an exploration of its status and practice in different religious contexts. It also establishes the study of liturgical literacy within the tradition ofliteracy studies termed 'New Literacy Studies' and draws upon theoretical models from major works in this tradition. Thirdly, a description is given of the community in question followed by an explanation of the research methods employed. Section II uses data from interviews and observations to present the people involved: the children, their parents, their teachers and those who organise the teaching ofliturgicalliteracy.

TEACHER INFORMATION Rotherham United Football Stadium Millmoor Ground (Old Site - Capacity 8,300, built in 1907) Ken Booth took ownership of Millmoor in return for clearing £3m of debt. The pitch is one of the smallest pitches in the country at only 115 x 75 yards (even smaller than the famous Highbury pitch). For the 2008-09 season Rotherham are playing at the Don Valley Stadium (capacity 25,000) in nearby Sheffield following a breakdown in talks with the landlords of Millmoor, who have threatened court action in order to retain certain privileges should the club be sold to new owners. This has lead to the club deciding that they can no longer play at their historic home ground. The club aim to be playing at a new community stadium in the near future. Downloaded from www.geography.org.uk/projects/livinggeography/rotherham/ History Rotherham Town struggled to find a ground in the late 1880s. Originally starting life at Clifton Lane in 1882,1 the club moved to Cocker’s Field then to the West End Ground in Wellgate. Town eventually made it back to Clifton Lane where in 1887 a 500 capacity stand was erected. Difficulties with the tenancy agreement from the Cricket Club meant that Town again had to move in 1891 to Clifton Grove. An open stand was erected at the Middle Road End. The club became a limited company and Rotherham Town Football and Athletic Club Limited financed the move and cleared the debt of £247.2 In 1891-92, gate receipts totalled £270, leading to an overall profit of £158.3 However, four years later the company was dissolved, in part due to the ground expenses totalling £173 9s 3d.4 By 1895-96 the landlord at Clifton Grove was owed rent and at the end of the season The Sheffield and Rotherham Independent reported that the club’s finances were ‘on the wrong side by £400-£500’.5 Professional football had returned to the town by the turn of the century through both Rotherham Club and Thornhill United.
