SENATE RESOLUTION 61 By Crowe
A RESOLUTION to honor Captain Ronald D. Deering, USN, for his meritorious service as Commanding Officer of USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734) (G).
WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this legislative body recognize those who in their years of work have performed with extraordinary dedication and unprecedented devotion; and
WHEREAS, Captain Ronald D. Deering is one such outstanding person who has served with alacrity and acuity for 26 years with the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, a native of Liverpool, Ohio, Captain Ronald Deering received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Youngstown State University in 1970; and
WHEREAS, in 1971, Captain Deering entered the United States Navy by way of the
Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program; and
WHEREAS, he was commissioned in February, 1972 and when he completed nuclear power training, Captain Deering reported to the USS JOHN C. CALHOUN (SSBN 630) (GOLD) for his first sea tour, which lasted from 1973 to 1976; and
WHEREAS, upon completion of Submarine Officers Advanced Course at Naval
Submarine School, Captain Deering reported for duty on the USS RAY (SSN 653) as an
Engineering Officer; and
WHEREAS, he then reported to the Naval Nuclear Power School as the Director of
Enlisted Nuclear Power Training; and *87512323* *008903* 87512323 *00890337* WHEREAS, Captain Deering reported to the USS JOHN C. CALHOUN (SSBN 630)
(BLUE) as an Executive Officer until August 1986; and
WHEREAS, from March, 1989 to November, 1991, Captain Deering served as the
Commanding Officer of the USS WHALE (SSN 638); and
WHEREAS, during this tour, WHALE was awarded a meritorious Unit Commendation and the Submarine Squadron Ten Battle Efficiency “E”; and
WHEREAS, from January 1992 to January 1993, Captain Deering was assigned as the
Director of Special Operations and Intelligence on the staff of the Commander, Submarine
Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; and
WHEREAS, he later served with acumen as a senior member of the Atlantic Fleet
Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board until February, 1995; and
WHEREAS, Captain Deering became the Commanding Officer aboard the USS
TENNESSEE (Gold); and
WHEREAS, under his sagacious leadership, the USS Tennessee became the first
Trident II submarine to complete an extended refit period; and
WHEREAS, the USS TENNESSEE was also selected to be the test platform for the alternate Bearing System; and
WHEREAS, Captain Deering will leave the USS TENNESSEE Gold to join the staff of
Commander Submarine Group 10 in Kings Bay; and
WHEREAS, his countless accomplishments aside, Captain Ronald Deering is most appreciative of the love and companionship he shares with his charming wife, Carolyn, and their two sons, Craig and Brent; and
WHEREAS, Captain Deering’s adroit qualities include the uncommon ability to motivate others to fully realize their potential, perhaps the most valuable of all skills; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE-HUNDREDTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, That we extend to Captain Ronald D. Deering our best wishes for every future success.
