Anglesey Coastal Path Description Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path Route Description SECTION 7: BEAUMARIS – MOEL Y DON On the road out of Beaumaris, pass the Liverpool Arms Hotel, and join the promenade in front of the bus stop past a number of benches. Just after the speed restriction signs a lane goes off right (signposted to golf course). Pass the entrance to Baron Hill Golf Course. Shortly after this, turn left up the drive to Pen-y-Parc. In winter – due to the muddiness of this section – it is advised that you carry on along the lane, past the reservoir, and turn left at the crossroads to re-join the path at its far end by a stone stile. Bear right off the drive to a kissing gate next to a stone wall. Follow the stone wall, cross a track and join an enclosed path. At a gateway, bear left to a kissing gate. Go through it, turn left and walk through a field, keeping to the left-hand side. Following a wall you’ll reach a kissing gate. Go through it and head over the higher ground through the trees, through another field and along a cleared path that comes out in front of a stone stile next to a gate. Turn left and follow the lane into Llandegfan. Go past the Post Office and a shop, and you’ll start to descend a hill, crossing over the road to follow the pavement. Walk down Cichle hill and on meeting the main road turn right. Follow the road over the bridge over the Afon Cadnant, and into Menai Bridge. Go past Nant Terrace on your right and then turn left up Ffordd Cynan (St. Georges Rd). Go past the chapel and the Ocean Science department of Bangor University, and at a T-junction by Cadfan Villa turn right. At a junction in front of you carry straight on, go past the dock and then turn left onto the promenade along the pier. Bear right off the pier go straight ahead past the Liverpool Arms and at the junction turn left. Go past Porth y Wrach, past a few right hand junctions and where the road splits bear left. Go under the Menai Suspension Bridge. Bear left through a hole in the wall and along the path in the wooded area past a sculpture dedicated to the Coastal Path and around the Eisteddfod standing stones. Coming back out onto the road, turn left; and shortly bear left again down onto the Belgian promenade. At a cross-roads where a causeway crosses to St. Tysilio’s Church carry straight on along a shoreline path that runs behind a set of gabions and follows the perimeter of the Rugby club. Come out through a gate into a parking area, past a pumping station and bear left up a lane to the main road. At the main road turn left, and follow the road through the lay-by opposite the telephone exchange. Just after the speed restrictions signs out of Menai Bridge turn left onto a path down a field. At the bottom of the field go through the wicket gate and turn right, across the field, over a drainage ditch, and through a small area of woodland. Head for the kissing gate at the bottom of the fence-line in front of you. Go through it and follow the fenced path, past the wooden sculpture. At a junction in the paths, carry straight on through a wicket gate, along the bottom of the next field to enter Coed y Môr. Follow the defined path along a boardwalk through the bottom of the wood, passing a path leading off to the right up though the wood. Cross a large ditch and the path opens out under the Britannia Bridge. Go through a gap in the wall and bear right before the bridge itself. Follow the track up to a lane by the Carreg Bran Hotel. Turn left. Walk through the churchyard of St. Mary’s church and follow the path down to the shore. This next section is tidally restricted – about an hour either side of high tide – and where it leaves the shore is closed over the hours of darkness and between 9pm and 7am. Turn right and follow the shore past Nelson’s statue for about 250 metres. Bear right up the steps and turn left along an enclosed path. On reaching a boathouse bear left, cross the pier and follow a raised walkway. Where the walkway ends, bear left up through woodland to come out onto a lane at Pwllfanogl. Head up the lane and on reaching the main road go left over a footbridge over Afon Braint. Cross the drive past the lodge and shortly cross the road and follow the pavement to the north of the A4080. On reaching Victoria Cottages, go right then immediately left through a kissing gate into an enclosed section through the fields and along boardwalks. On eventually reaching a driveway, go through the kissing gate and follow the drive through a field gate and to Llwyn Onn. At Llwyn Onn, take the kissing gate into the field, and keeping the field boundary on your right, you’ll soon reach a kissing gate. Go through the gate and cross the field, heading for Bryn Celli Wen. Go through another kissing gate and head towards a footbridge. Don’t cross it, but head left, keeping the stream to your right. You’ll soon reach a ramp leading up to the main road. Head left here and follow the road, carefully crossing the A4080, taking the road down to the coast at Moel y Don. .

  • Anglesey Plants and the Flora Group in 2014: Ian Bonner
Anglesey Plants and the Flora Group in 2014: Ian Bonner (As appeared in the Welsh Bulletin of the BSBI No.95 February 2015) Before the first indoor meeting at Treborth in March Pat Denne used the 9597 records added in 2013 to update the map showing the total taxa recorded in each of the 800 monads. Andrew Dixon made an electronic version of it available for subsequent reference. At the meeting it was again agreed to concentrate effort on collecting monad data toward the Atlas 2020, a future county flora and keeping the Rare Plant Register up to date. Barry Wrightson kindly agreed to take over the circulation of information about recording days and the coordination of bookings. Over the weekend of 26-27th April Professor John Richards and Dr Tim Rich led a Taraxacum workshop at Treborth, which included field visits to parts of Anglesey and Caernarfonshire. Some 39 taxa were noted on Anglesey, of which 26 were new VC records and will be published in Plant Records in due course. This illustrates the need for targeted recording of difficult taxa to back up basic monad coverage in the run-up to Atlas 2020. Atriplex species (Oraches) on coastal strandlines come into this category. They featured in the 2013 Report and Paul Green came up in early September to assist and make collections. Based on further work this year, it appears that as well as six species, the Anglesey coast may have a complex of four different hybrids. Material is now with the BSBI Referee for the genus. Atriplex portulacoides (Sea-purslane) is one that is easy to spot.

This assessment was undertaken in accordance with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) guidelines (Defra, 2006a). Because of the large number of watercourses within the study area a screening exercise was carried out which identified all significant watercourses within the study area and determined whether these should be carried through to the Appendix F assessment. The screening exercise identified that the following watercourses should be subjected to the full Appendix F assessment: .
