Today, Tristano is known primarily for his contribution to jazz and jazz piano in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He is also recognized for his pedagogical success as one of jazz’s first formal teachers. Beyond that, however, Tristano remains a peripheral figure in much of jazz’s history. In this thesis, I argue that Tristano’s contributions are often overlooked because he approached jazz creation in a way that ignored unspoken commercially-oriented social expectations within the community. I also identify anticommercialism as the underlying theme that influenced the majority of his decisions ultimately contributing to his canonic marginalization. Each chapter looks at a prominent aspect of his career in an attempt to understand how anticommercialism affected his musical output. I begin by looking at Tristano’s early 1950s loft sessions and show how changes he made to standard jam session protocol during that time reflect the pursuit of artistic purity—an objective that forms the basis of his ideology.

    Lee Konitz With Warne Marsh | Jazz Journal 13.06.19, 1036 Lee Konitz With Warne Marsh By Derek Ansell - March 29, 2019 This sterling 1955 session for Atlantic paired the two leading lights of the Tristano school to produce a programme of cool bop to satisfy most modernists of the day. Konitz was at his considerable best at this time and Marsh wasn’t far behind. They had a top-notch rhythm section in Mosca, Pettiford and Clarke with that fine guitarist Bauer adding ballast to the section as he did not get a lot of solo space here. The two front-line horn players were highly compatible and with the Konitz cool alto and Marsh playing soft focus tenor in the high register, it is often difficult to tell them apart. No matter, the music swings along in low key with Pettiford adding to the solo strength with his strong, warm bass sound. The programme begins with the old Basie favourite “Topsy”, both horn men keeping a continuous melodic line moving. They do the same on all these selections. The sextet take “Donna Lee” at a fast clip, similar to Parker’s tempo although the cool sounds are distinctive in Tristano mode. “Don’t Squawk” is the longest track, a slow blues by Pettiford which he introduces and sets up. Although an original bopper he fits into this music like the master he was. His powerful bass line and solos provide an extra dimension in tandem with Clarke who is also first class throughout. “Ronnie’s Line” and “Background Music” are the best tracks to hear the continuous melodic lines that Konitz and Marsh fashion here.

Kirchner: . .Two thousand eleven, and we’re in Lee Konitz’s apartment in Manhattan, and I’m Bill Kirchner, and we’re about to begin the oral history with Lee. Konitz: Welcome. Kirchner: Let’s start with the most obvious possible thing. Konitz: I was born at a very early age. Kirchner: Most of us were. Konitz: [chuckles] Kirchner: We have that in common among other things. Konitz: October thirteen, nineteen twenty-seven. Kirchner: And for the record, what is your full name? Konitz: “Leon” was my given name and “Lee” has become my second name. The fact is that I had two older brothers and I was supposed to be a girl, and my name was going to be “Leonna”. So I became “Leon” and then after a while my friends called me “Leo”, and then “Lee”, and it’s going to “Le”. When I get to “L” I think I’m leaving town. Kirchner: [Laughs] As I understand it from Andy Hamilton’s book your parents were both born in Europe? Konitz: Yes, my father in Austria, my mother in the Ukraine.
