    Magnetorheological Fluid Technology for Vehicle Applications Jim Toscano, Shigeru Shutto Lord Corporation, United States of America Abstract In recent years devices and systems using magnetorheological (MR) fluid technology have been commercialized across a wide range of industries, the most prominent and promising being automotive applications. Commercially successful MR fluid systems and devices have been developed for primary suspension in passenger automobiles; driver’s seat suspension in off-highway, construction and agricultural equipment; and steer-by-wire operator control in industrial, off-highway and marine vehicles. Today, thousands of vehicles are in operation and more than 100,000 MR dampers, shock absorbers and brakes are in use. For automotive platform applications alone, anticipated annual growth in demand for MR devices is more than 1 million. MR Fluid may be tailored for specific applications, provides high strength and is durable and robust. MR Fluid is highly developed with fundamental material data and device design and models and is backed by extensive experience-based guidelines.     Active suspension 1 Active suspension The active suspension and adaptive suspension/semi-active suspension are types of automotive suspensions that controls the vertical movement of the wheels with an onboard system, rather than in passive suspensions where the movement is being determined entirely by the road surface. This technology allows car manufacturers to achieve a greater degree of ride quality and car handling by keeping the tires perpendicular to the road in corners, allowing better traction and control. An onboard computer detects body movement from sensors throughout the vehicle and, using data calculated by opportune control techniques, controls the action of the active and semi-active suspensions. The system virtually eliminates body roll and pitch variation in many driving situations including cornering, accelerating, and braking. Active suspensions can be generally divided into two main classes: pure active suspensions and adaptive/semi-active suspensions. While adaptive suspensions only vary shock absorber firmness to match changing road or dynamic conditions, active suspensions uses some type of actuator to literally raise and lower the chassis independently at each wheel. Manufacturer brand names for adaptive suspensions include Airmatic suspension (Mercedes-Benz), Adaptive Damping, and Road-Sensing Suspension. Active suspensions include Active Body Control (Mercedes-Benz) and Active Roll Stabilization (BMW).[1][2][3][4] For instance, in the 2005 model year, the Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG has the Active Body Control active suspension as standard equipment, while the Mercedes-Benz S430 comes with the Airmatic adaptive suspension and has Active Body Control as an option.[5] According to The Truth About Cars, Active Body Control (ABC) "senses body movement and strangles it at birth.

OnStar® currently depends on active and functioning 2G CDMA networks to deliver services. As a result, in order to continue to provide OnStar® services without interruption, Canadian vehicles that do not have OnStar® 3G/4G LTE will need a hardware upgrade. In order to upgrade their vehicle hardware and continue receiving OnStar® services, a customer will receive a letter from OnStar® with instructions for the upgrade process when the hardware is available for installation on their vehicle. There are different versions of hardware required for vehicles that will be available at different times in early 2015, so it is important that customers first receive the communication from OnStar® to begin the upgrade process. Problem Definition The primary objective of this project is to determine the suitability and feasibility of using magneto rheological damper technology as part of an actively controlled bicycle suspension system. The goal of this investigation is to create a laboratory system that demonstrates the ability to influence damping characteristics from external computer controls and to create a conceptual design of the hardware/software/algorithms that would be needed for prototyping. There are over 5 million Mountain Bikes (MTBs) sold each year in this country alone. The suspension system is a significant driver of overall performance and unit cost. Any improvements that enhance performance or reduce cost would have a huge market potential. Of particular interest is the use of magneto rheological damper technology as part of a MTB suspension system. Magneto rheological (MR) fluid is a magnetic fluid that changes viscosity in the presence of a magnetic field. An electromagnet is used to change the viscosity of MR fluid. MR fluid is used as a damper in shock absorbers. When MR fluid is brought into a magnetic field, the metal particles in the fluid are aligned according to the magnetic field lines [1]. The stronger the magnetic field, the higher the viscosity of the MR fluid. Figure 1[2][3] shows a basic depiction of the various parts of the system.
