And that, we are agreed, is our definition of 'intellectual liberty'. - Virginia Woolf, Three Guineas (1938) 2 Image removed due to third party copyright ABSTRACT The high cultural profile of contemporary feminist publishing in Britain has previously met with a curiously evasive response from those spheres of academic discourse in which it might be expected to figure: women's studies, while asserting the innate politicality of all communication, has tended to overlook the subject of publishing in favour of less materialist cultural modes; while publishing studies has conventionally overlooked the significance of gender as a differential in analysing print media. Siting itself at this largely unexplored academic juncture, the thesis analyses the complex interaction of feminist politics and fiction publishing in twentieth-century Britain. Chapter 1 -" 'Books With Bite': Virago Press and the Politics of Feminist Conversion" - focuses on Britain's oldest extant women's publishing venture, Virago Press, and analyses the organisational structures and innovative marketing strategies which engineered the success of its reprint and original fiction lists. -

Sartorial Connections: Fashion, Clothes, and Character in Elizabeth Bowen’s To the North Vike Martina Plock In theory, dress is an art. The architecture of textiles ought to rank only less high than the architecture of stone in so far as textiles are less durable […].1 I Elizabeth Bowen’s writing eludes critical definition. Generically fluid, her novels and short stories include aspects of the Gothic romance, the ghost story, the spy thriller, the comedy of manners, classic realism, and the Anglo-Irish Big House novel. As its author vehemently claims in her unfinished autobiographical sketch Pictures and Conversations, “Bowen terrain cannot be demarcated on any existing map; it is unspecific.”2 Due partly to this conceptual elasticity and partly to the myth-inspiring eccentricity of the author’s biography,3 literary scholars continue to claim her fiction for incorporation in different critical fields. Even though she chose Ireland as a setting only for a marginal part of her fiction, the surfacing of Irish Studies as an academic subject was nonetheless instrumental in putting Bowen onto the critical 1 map in the 1980s and 90s. To be sure, scholars such as Vera Kreilkamp have argued persuasively that the “tensions and discordances of her Anglo-Irish experience” are central to understanding Bowen’s art.4 Paradoxically, though, it is also the responsiveness of Bowen’s fiction to conventional modes of writing that further emphasizes its formal mutability. Although Virginia Woolf is commonly considered “Bowen’s friend, mentor and, in some ways, her model as modern, professional female author,”5 an unpublished letter in the Elizabeth Bowen collection in the Harry Ransom Centre in Austin reveals that Bowen regularly sent her publications to another, more unlikely, recipient for critical inspection and approval: Agatha Christie.6 Positioning Bowen accordingly between the commercially successful crime writer and the high priestess of literary modernism suggests that her writing willingly lends itself to both a “high-brow” as well as “popular” label. -

She now was certain.’ Elizabeth Bowen, Eva Trout Thus muses Eva Trout, the ‘larger-than-life’ protagonist of Elizabeth Bowen’s final novel, 1 when visiting the National Portrait Gallery in London at the near end of a story that ultimately cannot contain her, a story in which the eponymous heroine remains, in the words of Victoria Glendinning, both ‘inexplicably large, and largely unexplained.’2 Such inexplicability has, of course, not prevented critics from trying to nonetheless “explain” Bowen’s last, unnerving heroine, and the story she generates. -

Week 13 - 19th Quaker Women v WOMEN, RELIGION AND HIGHER EDUCATION ALISON MACKINNON Women’s History Review, Vol. 7, No. 2, 1998 struggled with the relation between higher education and feminism. As Joyce Antler has concluded, the great virtue of many of the studies is the continuing joining of women’s educational experience to an analysis of women’s roles in larger society.[4] But one aspect remains strangely Educated Doubt: neglected; few have considered the way in which highly-educated women women, religion and the challenge integrated, ignored or resisted religion in the renegotiation of their subjectivities as highly educated women. of higher education, c. 1870-1920 [1] Higher education, with its emphasis on rationality and the secular, presented a major challenge to religious belief. Through several women’s responses to higher education we can reflect on the interplay between the ALISON MACKINNON secular, the activist and the mystical in their spiritual lives. Berland NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 118 i i ABSTRACT Elizabeth Bowen's merit as a writer lies in her style. She depicts people and places and British upper middle class life impressionistically. The impressionistic quality of her characterization and description is the central concern of this thesis. Bowen's use of the subject of love and marriage as a theme is explored and is approached by dividing the broad topic into certain more specific themes. The author's use of death as an impressionistic tool, her description of environment, and the uniqueness of her language, provide additional topics for investigation. Although the small body of criticism on Elizabeth Bowen deals extensively with her treatment of character and her descriptive style, nothing to my knowledge has been said about how her impressionistic technique relies on a sense of isolation. The Relinquishment of Plain dress: British Quaker women's abandonment of Plain Quaker attire, 1860-1914 Miss Hannah Frances Rumball A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2016 Hannah Rumball Dress History, Quakerism and Material Culture Page 2 Abstract This thesis discusses how British Quaker women negotiated relinquishing their religiously prescribed Plain dress from 1860 to 1914 in the context of developments in Quaker feminine identity. This thesis approaches its subjects by examining the primary source of surviving Quaker garments in British dress collections. These items provide the basis from which research methodologies and the personal narratives of Quaker women and their case studies are developed. Surviving garments, alongside historical letters, diaries, religious texts, department store catalogues, photographs and period dress illustrations are analysed in order to understand how women Quakers practised their religion and organised their public appearance through dress during this period. The original quality of this research is the outcome of an interdisciplinary approach. No other research project in the international dress history or religious history fields has discussed and critically considered the identity of British Quaker women through an analysis of their surviving clothing between 1860 and 1914. This aspect of British social history and therefore British identity has until now remained unexplored and unacknowledged. By 1860 Quakerism had undergone extreme doctrinal upheaval, which had led to the abandonment of those rules which enforced Plainness of speech and apparel that same year. Even prior to 1860, this thesis reveals that some women were incorporating fashion into their religious Plain dress, by using fashionable silhouettes and high-quality fabrics albeit eschewing bright colours and ornamentation.
