The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arbores- cent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of SANBI is partly based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbolises the commitment of SANBI to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s excep- tionally rich biodiversity for all people. Lloyd, the writer began, in 1884, a quarterly publication entitled Drugs and Medicines of North America, with the object of considering, consecutively, the American remedial agents then in use by members of the various professions of medicine in America. It was planned to give the historical record of every American medicinal plant, as well as its pharmaceutical prepara- tions, whether Pharmacopeial or otherwise. The literature on the sub- ject being largely Americana, the authors believed that they were in a position to do passable justice to the subject, inasmuch as they had, for a number of years, given much study in that direction. This publication was kindly received by the medical and pharma- ceutical professions of America, as well as by scientists throughout the world. However, notwithstanding the cordial reception of the work, its authors became convinced that, before going further in this direction, much reference literature not then at their command should be provided. -

Generally, the phytochemical constituents of plants fall into two categories based on their role in basic metabolic processes, namely primary and secondary metabolites. Primary plant metabolites are involved in basic life functions; therefore, they are more or less similar in all living cells. On the other hand, secondary plant metabolites are products of subsidiary pathways as the shikimic acid pathway. In the course of studying, the medicinal effect of herbals is oriented towards the secondary plant metabolites. Secondary plant metabolites played an important role in alleviating several aliments in the traditional medicine and folk uses. In modern medicine, they provided lead compounds for the production of medications for treating various diseases from migraine up to cancer. -

We headed north through the hills that fringe the Algarve. Here the traffic declined and we enjoyed a winding scenic transfer through these little-visited hills. The roadsides held an abundant and diverse range of flowers for the sharp-eyed to pick out. We stopped at a scenic viewpoint Mirador on a hilltop at the halfway point, to stretch our legs and take in a little of the botanical riches to be discovered. Birdlife was unfortunately rather thin for those interested, but the trip ahead would more than make up for it. The most notable plant found were a number of examples of Ornithogalum broteroi: a species confined to Iberia. Having spent rather too long ‘stretching our legs’, we headed on to complete our transfer to Mertola a little later than planned, where we were soon assigned our rooms and arrangements made to meet up later for our evening meal in town. Day 2 Wednesday 18th April Our day today was fully spent within the Castro Verde SPA, looking for the specialised and threatened steppe birds for which the area is renowned. -

Bail.ex Diels 1 Calumba root is a herbal medicine used for poor digestion, especially due to low stomach acid, diarrhea, gas, and loss of appetite. 2,3 Taxanomy: Kingdom : Plantae (unranked):Angiosperms (unranked): Eudicots Order : Ranunculales Family:Menispermaceae Genus : Jateorhiza Species : J.palmata 1 Colombo is a climbing plant, with a perennial root, formed of a number of fasciculated, fusiform, somewhat branched, fleshy, curved, descending tubers, of the thickness of an infant's arm, covered with a thin, brown epidermis, marked, especially toward the upper part, with transverse warts; internally they are deep yellow, inodorous, very bitter, filled with numerous, parallel, longitudinal fibers, or vessels. The stems, of which 1 or 2 proceed from the same root, are annual, herbaceous, about as thick as the little finger, simple in the male plant, twining, branched in the female, rounded and green; in the full-grown plant, below, they are thickly clothed with succulent, longitudinal hairs, which are tipped with a gland. The leaves are alternate and large; the younger ones thin, pellucid, bright-green, generally3- lobed, and upward gradually more numerous; the older ones remote, a span in breadth, nearly orbicular, deeply cordate, 5 to 7-lobed, the lobes entire, often deflexed, wavy on the surface and margin, dark-green above, paler beneath; hairy on both sides; the nerves, according to the number of lobes, are 3, 7, or 9, pale, connected by veins which, in themselves, are reticulated and are prominent beneath. -

(Thymelaeaceae). Methods: The dry chloroform and methanol extracts of the leaf and twigs of Daphne alpinа were used for analysis. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined by established procedures. Antioxidant potential was investigated by several methods. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts were obtained by microdilution method. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed for the identification of the most abundant metabolites, present in D. alpina extracts. Results: The total phenolics of the extracts ranged from 78.98 to 88.98 mg GA/g while total flavonoids were in the range 28.09 to 34.65 mg GA/g of fresh weight. HPLC analysis of the extracts showed the presence 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 7,8-dihydroxycoumarine and 7-hydroxycoumarine.
