Details of the Reserve 1.1 Introduction This plan has been prepared as a supplementary plan under the Nature Conservation Strategy of the Upper North East Ecologically Sustainable Forest Management (ESFM) Plan. It is prepared in accordance with the terms of section 25A (5) of the Forestry Act 1916 with the objective to provide for the future management of that part of Orara East State Forest No 536 set aside as Bruxner Park Flora Reserve No 3. The plan was approved by the Minister for Forests on 16.5.2011 and will be reviewed in 2021. -

Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted on the effect ‘butterfly acoustical skin’ (metallic version of the lepidopterans scale coverage) on the acoustic performances of two - bladed propeller (diameter of 1200 mm, airfoil sections of NACA 2415, rotating speed of 1780 rpm, Re ≈ 2 × 105) in a low – speed straight through a wind tunnel. Attention was initially directed to this problem by observation of the porous scales and porous scale coverage of lepidopterans as well as other studies indicating the noise suppression of flying lepidopterans by wing appendages. The property of the moth coverage allows these insects to overcome bat attacks at night. These appendages are very small (size: 30 – 200 µm) and have a various porous structures. I discuss both many different micro – and nanostructures of the porous scales, and many differences in details among various structures of the porous scale coverage of lepidonterans. I consider here only porous scales of butterflies Papilio nireus, Nieris rapae, Deelias nigrina, male Callophrys rubi, male Polyommatus daphnis, butterfly Papilio palinurus as well as porous scale coverage of cabbage moth, moth of Saturniidae family and moth of Noctuoidea family. The evolutionary history of lepidopterans and the properties of lepidopterans scale coverage are briefly discussed as well as different methods of reducing aero acoustic noise of aircrafts. -

Annotated checklist of the lichens and lichenicolous fungi of Bhutan. Fungal Diversity 11: 21-48. An annotated checklist is presented of the 287 lichens and lichenicolous fungi known from Bhutan. The vast majority (225) are new records for the country, based on recent collections of 264 species by the second author. Most species were previously known from the Himalayas, but some represent considerable range extensions. Noticeable examples are the rare Ropalospora chlorantha, so far only known from eastern North America, and the fITstreport from the Northern Hemisphere of Lepraria nigrocincta. Pyrrhospora bhutanensis is described as new to science. Key words: Bhutan, checklist, Himalaya, lichenicolous, lichens. Introduction The Kingdom of Bhutan is located in the eastern Himalayas. It stretches 300 kilometres from west to east, and about 150 kilometres from north to south. Bhutan has an extremely varied landscape, going from the high mountains (up to 7553 m) in the north to the lowland belt in the south (100-300 m altitude). A number of north-south running rivers created narrow valleys with each their own characteristics. The frontier between the Palaearctic and the Oriental biogeographical regions runs midway through the country. The country can be divided in three climatic zones: alpine, temperate and subtropical. Precipitation varies enormously within the country. In the subtropical south, monsoon rainfall reaches 5.5 m annually, while in the temperate foothills rainfall is moderate and both dry and wet valleys occur. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Shrubs Shrubs 86 87 biibaya Broom bush Language name biibaya (yuwaalaraay) Scientific name Melaleuca uncinata Plant location Shrubs The biibaya (Broom Bush) is widespread through mallee, woodland and forest in the western part of the Border Rivers and Gwydir catchments. It often grows on sandy soils. Plant description The biibaya is an upright shrub with many stems growing from the main trunk. It grows between 1 to 3 metres high. The bark on older stems is papery. It has long, thin leaves which look like the bristles on a broom. Many fruit join together in a cluster which looks like a globe. Traditional use Can you guess what this plant was used for from its common name? The stems and girran.girraa (leaves) of the biibaya provided a useful broom. Bungun (branches) can also be cut and dried for use in brush fences. Paperbark trees (plants belonging to the genus Melaleuca) had many other uses also. The papery nganda (bark) was used to wrap meat for cooking and as plates, as well as being used as bandages, raincoats, shelter, blankets, twine and many other things. The nectar from the gurayn (flowers) could be eaten or drunk, steeped in water, as a sweet drink. Crushing the girran.girraa provides oil. Young girran.girraa can be chewed, or pounded and mixed with water, to treat colds, respiratory complaints and headaches. This mixture was also used as a general tonic. Inhaling the steam from boiling or burning the leaves provides relief from cold, flu and sinusitis (Howell 1983, Stewart & Percival 1997). The gurayn were also used for decoration.
