“We believe that all can succeed” Message from the Head

As ever, a newsletter like this can only scratch the surface of school life. Nevertheless, I hope that it gives you at least a flavour of the activities and opportunities that are available to pupils at Llanishen High School, and how all of these add so much to the classroom-based curriculum.

Taken together, they represent a great body of achievements by a wide range of students. We hope that this all adds to the chances of pupils, both present and past, succeeding to the best of their abilities.

Consequently, on behalf of pupils and parents, I would like to thank all the staff who have helped to make these things possible.

Kind regards.

RA Smyth Headteacher

“We believe that all can succeed” “We believe that all can succeed” Challenge Heddwen Frost

In July, I took part in the voyage from Bay to Cowes in preparation for completing the Round the Island Race—one of the largest 1-day yacht races in the world; travelling around the Isle of Wight involving 1700 boats. We set sail on Challenge Wales, a 72 foot yacht normally used for worldwide voyages. I soon got to know the 15-strong crew and it was a great way to make new friends and build up team skills as well as navigation and racing. I loved the fact that we got straight into it and learned as we were doing the various tasks.

A typical day on board would start by preparing the boat for One of the highlights of the experience was sailing so roles such as hoisting and feeding the sails, working sailing around Land’s End; we had been on the winches and the helm to name but a few! After you set watches for a day or so and my team were off sail, 2 people are placed on helm whilst the others tidy up, duty but I felt a bit seasick so decided to stay up tweak the sails or make lunch. on deck and read my book. The sun was shining and as I watched the bow glide through the water, a pod of dolphins came to play! It was magnificent seeing them play with the wavers we were creating! It’s something I will never forget. Find the whole story on our website.

“We believe that all can succeed” “We believe that all can succeed” Dragons Den Autism Base

The Autism base is now up and running. This is the third Autism Base within Cardiff and is located within the Youth Centre building. The purpose of the base is to support pupils within a mainstream school but also offering them a ‘safe haven’ to visit at unstructured times. They have been well-supported within their classes and have already made lots of friends. In the Summer term we intend to develop a sensory garden and vegetable patch so any help with that would be great. We are also developing our kitchen facilities and hope in the future to raise money for charity by selling our baked goods. Anybody wishing to visit the base and find out more can contact the school.

In the summer of 2013 our KS4 Welsh Baccalaureate students competed in groups to pitch their ideas and advert for a charity event. Their presentation was in front of formidable groups of Dragons including our Governing Body, executives from the Principality Building Society and local business people. The winning group were invited to the Llanishen branch of the Principality where they each opened a savings account, into which, £25 was kindly deposited by the Principality. We hope they save wisely for the future!

“We believe that all can succeed” “We believe that all can succeed” World Challenge Peru, July 2013

In July 2013, a team of twelve courageous students left for the trip of a lifetime. Although travelling is an incredible thing, not many people take the opportunity to do it, so listen to this account of our trip and, hopefully, be inspired! We went to Peru, in South America – land of llamas, Incan artefacts, incredible views and a ridiculous number of potatoes. The trip was organised by a group called World Challenge, the largest schools expedition provider in the world, who provide organisation for schools to take students everywhere. We each raised our sum of £4195 ourselves. through car washes, our own businesses, After about two years of preparation, we were finally part time jobs, and a huge amount of cake sales. Also ready for the most incredible month of our lives. The story of Faust is brought to life in an explosion of hit songs, high energy dance routines and glitter-ball spinning action. Burn, baby, burn—Disco Inferno.

Whilst they did not win, they both felt that the evening was of enormous benefit as they received some very helpful comments from the judges.

As a music department, we are very grateful to both pupils for taking so much time in prepar- ing for this event. Karis is an outstanding cel- list who leads our cello section. Rachel, who hopes to read music in London next year, has made an outstanding contribution to the music department singing in choirs, concerts and com- munity events as well as being an active part of our music productions.
