January 17, 2021 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time A Message from Fr. Matt ... Dear Brothers and Sisters, The First Reading and the Gospel today focus on listening. In the First Reading, Samuel is listening. He thinks again and again that Eli is calling him. Once Eli realizes that it is God who is calling to Samuel, he tells Samuel to listen again and if he hears his name being 9 Days for Life is a novena for called he is to say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” Then Samuel is to listen. the protection of human life In the Gospel, two disciples of John the Baptist listen to him when he points out to them the Lamb of God. The passage says, “They heard what he said and followed Jesus.” Join thousands of Catholics Once they catch up with Jesus there is an exchange of asking questions and listening nationwide in the annual to answers. The last question they ask is kind of a strange one. “Rabbi, where are you Respect Life novena, staying?” Let’s come back to that in a minute. 9 Days for Life Are you a good listener? Sometimes I am but sometimes I’m not. It depends on what is Thursday, January 21 through going on. If I have too many distractions, if I am angry about something or I’m tired, I don’t Friday, January 29 listen very well. How about you? Listening is so important in our human relationships. It is also important in our spiritual life. How about in prayer? Do you listen in prayer? Get daily intentions, brief reflections, and more. When I pray, I tend to do a lot of talking. Praying the Rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, these are all meaningful and important things to do. But often, Sign up at 9daysforlife.com! once I finish praying, and I’m at the point where the good stuff from praying comes in, a point of quiet, of meditation, of being able to listen, I stop! I say, well, I’m done. I prayed my Rosary and I cut off the conversation that these prayers are supposed Mass & Confession Schedule to lead to. Lots of talking. Not much listening. This schedule is altered for Holy Days & Special Events I like to build prayer into my daily routine. It sounds weird but I have a prayer I say in Monday the shower. I always pray the Angelus when I’m putting on deodorant. Things like that. Mater Dolorosa Mass - Noon This is a good thing to do. I take the stuff of my daily routine and I make them times of Tuesday prayer. But here again, I do most of the talking. The shower head doesn’t talk back to me! St. Wendelin Mass - 8:00am Do I listen when I pray? I know I don’t do it enough. How about you? Wednesday Why do you think we don’t listen enough St. Wendelin Mass - 10:00am when we pray? Is it because we have too School-Only - If School is in remote much going on? We have many worries. learning status, Mass is canceled We have many people to pray for. Maybe Mater Dolorosa Confession - 6:15-6:45pm it is because we are angry. Maybe it is Mater Dolorosa Mass - 7:00pm because we are busy and distracted. Or, Thursday I think we are not sure that we are going St. Wendelin Mass - 8:00am to like what God says to us. Could be that is just me. But, I bet that it might be some of Friday you, too. St. Joseph Mass - Noon Saturday What do you think God will say to you if you listen to Him? Will he tell you what Mater Dolorosa Confession - 11:00-11:30am a horrible sinner you are? Will God tell you that He resents the fact that you haven’t done St. Wendelin Confession - 11:00-11:30am what you know you should do? Will He tell you that He is disappointed with you? St. Joseph Confession - 11:45am-12:15pm I don’t think God will tell you any of that. St. Wendelin Vigil Mass - 4:00pm Mater Dolorosa Vigil Mass - 5:30pm Here is what I think God will tell us, if we give Him time to speak and we listen to Him. Sunday Masses Remember last week, if you were at Mass with me or if you read the bulletin, I gave you St. Wendelin - 7:00am a homework assignment. It was to remind yourself each day that you are God’s beloved Mater Dolorosa - 8:15am and that God is pleased with you. Maybe you’re saying, “How can you know that?” St. Joseph - 9:30am St. Paul can help answer that question. In the Second Reading, St. Paul says, “You are not St. Wendelin - 10:30am your own, for you have been purchased at a price.” You exist because God wants you to exist. You are God’s beloved. I think that if you listen, God will tell you that. Open Prayer Times wrap around Weekday Let’s go back to the Gospel, when the Disciples ask Jesus that strange question, “Where are Masses, with churches available for you staying?” St. Paul answers that question by reminding you that your body is a temple of quiet reflection: the Holy Spirit. This means that God is inside you. God is staying with you! If you listen, > an hour after the two 8am Masses God will tell you that you are not alone. You are never alone. God is staying with you! > an hour before the two Noon Masses and the one 7pm Mass I need to do better at listening, especially at prayer. Maybe you do, too. Here is the challenge for this week. Pray like you normally do but add time to listen. Give God all that WEEKEND MASS REGISTRATION is worrying and distracting you. That stuff is important to Him. But then be quiet and listen. Registration for weekend (Saturday Maybe even set a timer for five or ten minutes, more if you like. And just listen. I believe Vigils and Sunday) Masses needs to continue for a while longer.
