Coalgate Saleyards 29th September 2016 Prime Lambs -2500 A large yarding of mainly heavy lambs saw the market ease by $2 to $3 per head today. Medium weight lambs sold on par with previous sales. Tops $130 - $140 Good $115 - $130 Mediums $100 - $115 Light $90 - $100 Prime Ewes - 500 Medium sized yarding of ewes saw the market lift by a couple of dollars at today's sale. Tops $90 - $105 Good $80 - $90 Mediums $70 - $80 Light $60 - $70 Store Lambs – 800 A feature line of Perendale ewe lambs met with solid demand selling up to $140 per head. The remainder of the store sale was made up of smaller lambs which sold on par with recent weeks. Tops $115 - $136 Good $100 - $110 Mediums $85 - $95 Light $60 - $70 Prime Cattle - 150 A quality line of Hereford/Friesian cross steers sold from $2.95 to $3.04 per kg ($1875 per head). Hereford/Angus cross steers at 597 kgs made $2.98 per kg ($1778 per head). The heifer market peaked at $2.98 per kg for very well finished Charolais heifers. Other Hereford/Friesian cross sold up to $2.85 per kg. Steers $2.85 - $3.04 Heifers $2.76 - $2.98 Cows $1.68 – $1.90 Store Cattle – 340 Quality Angus yearling steers made up to $1175 per head with the Angus heifers selling up to $1000. Friesian yearling steers made $790 per head with the Hereford/Friesian cross bulls making $880 per head.     CHAPTER ONE The Pastoral Frontier: Occupying the Grasslands t four o’clock in the afternoon on 4 january 1855, the Royal Stuart dropped anchor at Lyttelton after eighty-six days at sea.1 Among the passengers was John Barton Arundel Acland, the youngest son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet, who held Athe estates of Killerton in Devon and Holnicote in Somerset. Acland, who was thirty years old at the time of his arrival in New Zealand, had been educated at Harrow and taken a degree at Christ Church, Oxford. He had practised law in London, but had become bored with both the law and the city.
