This compound is the lighter of the two monomers used to form melamine resin and Novolac. A pyridine derivative with no substituent at the 4 position is produced by the reaction of this compound with two beta-keto esters in the Hantzsch synthesis. An amine nucleophilically attacks this compound in the first step of a reaction which forms a beta-amino carbonyl, a compound also called a (*) Mannich base. The proton NMR spectrum of this compound consists of only one peak at around 9.6 ppm. In ChIP, this compound is used to cross-link DNA to proteins. That story begins with its central character daydreaming about dodgem cars while his teacher talks about Masterman Ready and concludes with his cousin Bert trying to break them onto the title carousel at the Goose Fair. The family of the narrator of another story by this man entertains itself by muting the TV during politician’s speeches.

  • MEMORIAL MEDAL of the RIJEKA EXPEDITION (Medaglia
Prister: Spomen-medalja ekspedicije u Rijeku Num. vijesti, broj 72., Zagreb, 2019. SUMMARY MEMORIAL MEDAL OF THE RIJEKA EXPEDITION (Medaglia commemorativa della spedizione di Fiume) The Croatian Sabor (parliament) broke off state links with the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy on 29 October 1918. On that day the Croatian National Council in Rijeka received the order from Zagreb to take over rule in the city. Dr Rikard Lenac (1869- 1943) was appointed Governor of Rijeka, but this did not resolve the situation. The newly-created State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, founded on 29 October 1918, could not defend Croatia’s rule in Rijeka. Conflict broke out between Croatia and Italy, and to prevent it the Joint Allied Command was established on 3 November 1918. The regular Italian army was also part of the international forces, and this showed itself decisive for the further fate of the city. On 16 November 1918, units of the Italian army broke into the Governor’s Palace, evicted Dr Rikard Lenac from it, took over Rijeka and occupied Sušak. A serious dispute broke out among the Allies because of Rijeka, and the situation in the city was at boiling point because in the spring of 1919 almost twenty thousand armed Italians were stationed there, and also several battalions of British, French and American soldiers. Under international pressure, the Italian National Council was disbanded and the members of the Rijeka Legion were banished from the city. On 27 August 1919, the First Regiment of Sardinian Grenadiers also had to leave Rijeka. This military unit was transferred to Ronchi near Trieste.

National Museums and the Negotiation of Difficult Pasts Conference Proceedings from EuNaMus, Identity Politics, the Uses of the Past and the European Citizen, Brussels 26-27 January 2012. Dominique Poulot, José María Lanzarote Guiral & Felicity Bodenstein (eds) EuNaMus Report No. 8. Published by Linköping University Electronic Press: http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp_home/index.en.aspx?issue=082 © The Author. Conflicts, Borders and Nationalism: The Fiume Archive-Museum in Rome Ilaria Porciani (University of Bologna) Abstract The Fiume Museum in Rome offers at first sight nothing spectacular and certainly does not qualify as ‘national’. However, it can help focusing from a new perspective on the construction of an (imagined) community and the role of museums to build cohesion and identity; the process of constructing material heritage in order to materialize the nation and crystallize a center for the community; the construction of an historical narrative on traumas, identities, national belonging and contested heritages. Moreover, following the story of this museum helps consider the politics of memory as often overlapping with a clear public use of history. Two examples are perfect cases in point. D’Annunzio’s occupation of Fiume 1920– technically speaking a putsch against the will of the Italian government and international diplomacy – was a powerful rhetoric tool in Mussolini’s hands. It created a myth while the battle was taking place: the so called ‘bloody Christmas, the heroic sacrifice of Fiume’s defenders - in short the myth of the ‘mutilated victory’. Even more than Istria, Fiume is a synecdoche for Italian nationalism. After World War II the birth of the Fiume museum and the activity of the Istrian and Dalmatian community was deeply connected with the violent memory war on the foibe – the natural pits in the carsick area where about 3000 victims of political violence were thrown (dead or still alive) from 1943 to 1945).

Date ~ ~AM z!Jo-6' Anne York, C Date ~j)r Date Abstract This thesis examines how the war aims of Italy developed during the First World War as formulated within the Treaty of London, which helped give political birth to Fascism. Emphasis is put on the Treaty itself and the months of negotiations between Italy, France, Russia and Britain that allotted Italy various territorial spoils along the Eastern Adriatic Sea where thousands of Italians lived, giving rise to irredentist claims. The eventual refusal of the inter-Allied delegates to honor the Treaty at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 resulted in social discontent and a feeling of betrayal among numerous Italians. The thesis also examines the political transformation of Benito Mussolini from his Socialist origins to being the fascist Premier of Italy. Particular emphasis is placed on how Mussolini used the Treaty of London as a propaganda tool to obtain political power. Fascist foreign policy regarding the unfulfilled articles of the treaty is shown as a prime motivating tenet to rationalize Italian expansion.
