President’s Message

Graduates, family members and friends,

This extraordinary time has brought challenges and hardships to so many Oregonians, and to millions across the U.S. and globally, in ways never imagined or seen in modern history. At Oregon Tech, planning and deployment of strategies to deliver high quality teaching and learning to our students amid the pandemic were done with resolve and speed, putting the safety and health of our students and university communities above all else.

I’m so proud of our students, especially those who are graduating today, for adapting so quickly to remote learning; proud of our faculty for switching gears with speed and adapting the curriculum to remote learning practically overnight; and proud of our staff who have been managing operations across the board, collaborating with our communities, and doing whatever is needed to move us forward. This includes quickly designing a creative virtual commencement ceremony when it was clear we could not have an in-person event, including giving our graduates the option to also participate in the June 2021 ceremony.

Class of 2020, we honor you today, the class that has a capacity for creating a vision of where we will now go as a world community. You are the class who will lead the next generation of innovators, directing your intellect and skills to build us up from these times of struggles. We need you, who you have become, to help get us though this incredible challenge. I know you are prepared to go out and transform the world. We can’t wait to see all that you will do as you move forward in your professional careers, and as contributing members of your communities.

Congratulations Class of 2020! Go Owls!

Dr. Nagi G. Naganathan President, Oregon Tech 1 Commencement Speakers

Jeff Merkley U.S. Senator, Oregon As Oregon’s U.S. Senator, Jeff Merkley's goal is to make Washington work for working Americans. He is fighting to create good jobs for Oregonians, protect consumers, and ensure that all Oregonians have access to high-quality, affordable education.

Born in the timber town of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Merkley is the son of a millwright and the first in his family to attend college. After earning an undergraduate degree from Stanford and graduate degree in Public Policy at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, he worked as a national security analyst at the Pentagon and at the Congressional Budget Office.

In 1991, he returned to Oregon to lead Portland’s Habitat for Humanity, empowering low-income families through homeownership. He went on to serve as president of the World Affairs Council in Portland before entering the Oregon House of Representatives in 1998.

Merkley became Speaker of the House in 2007, leading the most productive legislative session in decades. The legislature increased education funding, expanded access to affordable prescription drugs, passed landmark environmental and energy legislation, established domestic partnerships, cracked down on predatory payday and title lending, and created Oregon’s first ever Rainy Day fund.

In the U.S. Senate, Merkley continues to fight to create living-wage jobs, to push back on unfair trade policies that ship Oregon’s jobs overseas, and to save our planet from climate change. He has worked on college affordability, retirement security for seniors; and led reforms to breaking up Senate gridlock.

Senator Merkley serves on the Senate Committees on Appropriations; Environment and Public Works; Budget; and Foreign Relations.

Danny Jacobs, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S. President, Oregon Health & Science University Dr. Danny Jacobs is the fifth president of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians and advance research and education innovation in service to the state and the nation. Dr. Jacobs grew up in Arkansas. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard, a medical degree from Washington University–St. Louis, and completed residency and chief residency in general surgery and research fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also earned a master’s of public health from Harvard. After serving as endowed chair of the departments of surgery at Creighton and Duke University, he was appointed as James Professor, Executive Vice President, Provost and Dean of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with tenure in surgery, public health and translational medicine. Serving as a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Board of Directors, the Oregon Business Council Board of Directors, as well as the OHSU, OHSU Foundation, and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation Boards of Directors, Dr. Jacobs actively pursues health care, research and education solutions for communities across Oregon. Dr. Jacobs engages in a wide range of national and regional health care, research and education initiatives while serving as a member of the Association of Academic Health Center’s President’s Council on Cybersecurity, the Oregon Council of Presidents, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, Science and Technology Experts Group. A prolific author and editor with research interests in the metabolic effects of malnutrition, stress, infection and injury, among other interests, Dr. Jacobs has more than 125 peer reviewed publications, as well as three books and 82 reviews, chapters, editorials and other educationally relevant publications. Accolades for his contributions to academic missions include the National Medical Association’s Presidential Award, the Julius A. Mackie Distinguished Graduate Award from University of Pennsylvania, the Matson Award for Teaching from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an Outstanding Service Award from the Harvard Community Health Plan, the Alumni Achievement Award from Washington University – St. Louis School of Medicine, election to the National Academy of Medicine and, most recently, being invited to join the founding editorial board of New England Journal of Medicine’s Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery. Graduating Speakers Clark “CJ” Anderson Electrical Engineering, Klamath Falls Originally from Tigard, Oregon, CJ Anderson has been pursuing his degree at Oregon Tech for five years, but has been involved in the institution for eight years, ever since his wife began working in the Admissions office in 2012. He has supported and helped her with recruitment events and later began volunteering at other activities when she moved to a position in Campus Life. His involvement has included almost every Music Garden, panels at Preview days, registration event tours, and serving on committees including the Commission on College Teaching and the Sexual Misconduct Commission, the latter which produced a successful proposal for an informational display that is used on campus today. Also helping as a student worker, CJ’s most recent position was in the Office of International Student Services, allowing him to come in contact with a diverse and valued community of students he may not have met in his courses. Graduating from Electrical Engineering, CJ has already secured employment with Intel, where his wife and three-year-old daughter will join him in Hillsboro. Nashmy Luna Applied Psychology, Portland-Metro A first-generation college student from Newberg, Oregon, Nashmy Luna began at Oregon Tech in 2014. Originally interested in Medical Imaging Technology and Medical Laboratory Science, after a year off in between the two she decided that Applied Psychology best fit her areas of interest. Her early involvement at the university included serving as communications officer with ASOIT Portland-Metro, working as a student ambassador and aiding the Resource Budget Commission as a student representative. During her last year with Oregon Tech, she was vice president of ASOIT Portland-Metro, president of the Psychology Club, once again a student ambassador, and she expanded her committee involvement to serving on the Commission on College Teaching and Tuition Recommendation Committee. After graduation, Nashmy will pursue a job in student services and a career in higher education. 2 Student Awards (Klamath Falls)
