In his thirtyjive years as a professional musician, ANDOR TOTH has pursued parallel careers as a violinist, chamber music performer, educator, and conductor. A graduate ofthe Juilliard School, he was one ofthe youngest members of the NBC Symphony under . Described as "a brilliant violin soloist" (L.A. Times) and as ranking "with the all time best" as a conductor (Houston Press), he is currently Professor ofMusic at where is Director of Orchestras and Opera and founder of the newly formed Stanford String Quartet. He has performed in such major centers as London, Berlin, New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Paris, The Hague, Leningrad, and Moscow, and has been a frequent soloist with many orchestras, notably Cleveland, Dallas, and Houston. He has worked with , , Dmitri Mitropoulos, and . Andor Toth has been a violinist with the for over twenty years: "Peerless masters ofthe ensemble art"(Moscow ), offering "chamber music as near to perfection as could be imagined." (New York). As the leader of the , he has toured worldwide. The group has recorded the complete Bartok Quartets which are available on Vox and Decca. Play­ ing first violin, he performed with the Oberlin String Quartet in 1958 when it was a prize winner in the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Belgium. Andor Toth's conducting career began in 1948 when he became assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Symphony. While there, he conducted the Cleveland Little Symphony, a chamber orchestra composed of key players from the Cleveland Symphony. Later, he was the Associate Conductor of the Houston Symphony where he was also a successful producer-director of music theater, ballet, and opera. Mr. Toth has also guest conducted the Denver Symphony and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The formation and direction of The Primarius Ensemble, composed of key players of the Symphony, is one of the latest accomplishments of his inter­ national career. From Oberlin College, where he taught violin and chamber music, to his current post at Stanford University, Andor Toth has distinguished himself as an educator. He organized the Oberlin Sinfonietta, composed offaculty and award winning students;founded the Baroque String Ensemble while teach­ ing opera and string arts at the University of Colorado; conducted the University ofTexas Orchestra; and directed the Morrison Chamber Music Foundation at San Francisco State University.
