Comedy & Drama Exhibition Stories, People and Programmes
Comedy & Drama Exhibition Stories, people and programmes This exhibition is the latest in a continuing series of initiatives celebrating the achievements of writers, performers and programme producers associated with the BBC. It profiles the extent and diversity of their work and provides a useful reminder of BBCNI’s long-established role in both nurturing, and providing an outlet for, local creative talent. Radio and television dramas have explored universal themes using accents and storylines familiar as our own.And comedy – as well as making us laugh - has given us alternative perspectives on the problems, pre-occupations and occasional absurdities of life wherever it is lived. BBCNI has assisted local performers in reaching audiences beyond this place and their success has helped to nurture the region’s reputation as a provider of Network programmes across a range of genre and subject areas. Building on these accomplishments by seeking out new writers and production talent is a key objective for the future. Its achievement will be critical to the growth and viability of the creative industries in Northern Northern Ireland Ireland and the social, cultural and economic benefits associated with them. Society, like broadcasting itself, is constantly changing and BBCNI’s comedy and drama output must reflect informing... educating... entertaining... connecting... that reality. Quality, innovation and distinctiveness must remain its guiding ambitions as BBCNI fulfils a role that is made uniquely possible as a result of its licence funding -

The Commitments 90% (1991) liked it Average Rating: 3.7/5 User Ratings: 28,143 Movie Info "The Irish are the blacks of Europe, Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland, and the North Siders are the blacks of Dublin ... so say it loud -- I'm black and I'm proud!" Or so Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins) tells his slightly puzzled friends as he tries to assemble a rhythm & blues show band in a working class community in Dublin in Alan Parker's film The Commitments. Jimmy is a would-be music business wheeler and dealer, and he's decided what Dublin needs is a top- shelf soul band. However, top-shelf soul musicians are hard to find in Dublin, so he has to make do with what he can find. However, after a long round of auditions, Jimmy makes two inspired discoveries: Deco (Andrew Strong), an abrasive and alcoholic streetcar conductor who nevertheless has a voice like the risen Theatrical release poster (Wikipedia) ghost of Otis Redding, and Joey "The Lips" Fagan (Johnny Murphy), a horn player who TOMATOMETER knows soul music backwards and forwards and claims to have played with everyone from All critics Wilson Pickett to Elvis Presley. Before long, the band -- called the Commitments -- is packing them in at local clubs. But do they have what it takes to make the big time? Based on the novel 88% by Roddy Doyle, who also co-wrote the Average Rating: 7.5/10 screenplay, The Commitments is sparked by Reviews Counted: 42 fine performances by its young cast and Fresh: 37 enthusiastic performances of a number of '60s Rotten: 5 soul classics; the cast, who play their own instruments, reassembled the band for a concert Top critics tour after the film became a hit. -

2 SHORT SYNOPSIS Based on Posy Simmonds’ much‐loved graphic novel, which in turn was inspired by Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd, this is a joyful but occasionally dark comedy about a young newspaper journalist torn between two lovers. Tamara Drewe’s childhood home is being sold, and her return to the rural Dorset village where she grew up causes something of a stir. Having left as an awkward teenager she returns as a smouldering femme fatale, kicking up a storm of envy, lust and gossip wherever she goes. Tamara is the ultimate modern girl but her story of love and confusion is timeless. LONG SYNOPSIS After leaving her sleepy Dorset village as a gawky teenager to seek her fame and fortune in London, Tamara Drewe is forced to return to Ewedown after the death of her mother, to renovate and sell on the family home. Much changed from the teenage ugly duckling with the enormous conk, Tamara returns as a smouldering femme fatale, media celebrity and aspiring novelist, and most importantly with her new nose job. Her arrival sends shockwaves through this quiet community, particularly amongst its male contingent: there’s successful 50‐something thriller writer Nicholas Hardiment, a serial philander to his poor wife Beth, and who once spurned the advances of a teenage Tamara; there’s Andy Cobb, her teenage boyfriend, now handyman and gardener at the Hardiments’ writers’ retreat, but surely too much of a local yokel for the new Tamara; and there’s Ben Sergeant from Swipe, rock musician and teen idol, who moves to Ewedown to be with Tamara after she interviews him at a local music festival. -
