Older citizens utilizing the Senior Center had been picnicking and having var- ious classes at the riverside and Worley told Britt that he thought he could secure funding for picnic tables in the area. With seed money of $5,000 and the construction assistance of Darren Currie, then parks and recreation director for the county and now Whiteville city manag- er, Fair Bluff bought enough lumber for the beginnings of the Riverwalk. “We took that $5,000 and used it as a 20 or 25 percent local funding match to get state and federal parks and recreation grants to build the first phase of the elevated Riverwalk with Community Development Block Grant Funds,” Britt said Saturday. By the time the first phase of the Riverwalk had been completed, former Fair Bluff Commissioner Willard Small had been appointed to the governing board of the state’s Tobacco Trust Fund Commission. Small, thought to have been the longest-serv- ing town board member in the state’s history when he re- tired from the board of com- missioners in the early 2000s, was joined by Tabor City Town Manager Al Leonard on the Tobacco Trust Commission and, together, they were able to shepherd approval of grants for two subsequent expansions of the Riverwalk, expansions that lengthened the structure to close to a half mile in length. While some, including Britt, wonder what the future holds for Fair Bluff’s one-block Main business district, Britt holds no doubts that the Riverwalk will be rebuilt. “Will it come Staff Photos by Allen Turner back?” he asks. “Yes, definite- Britt says the circular pattern of bark stripped from a pine tree ly. In one of the many ironies of this election, a robust turnout in early voting was the path to victory for those who had earlier sought to suppress it. More than 12,000 people voted early at the board of elections office or at five satellite locations in Columbus County, where overall turnout was heavy at 60 percent. Before the election, a federal judge overturned a 2013 voter ID law enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly, ostensibly for voter fraud. The law added more stringent identification require- ments for voters at the polls, but it also shortened the early voting period The point from 17 to 10 days Ironically, a federal judge’s and restricted ruling that overturned North Sunday as an early Carolina’s 2013 Voter ID law voting day.
