In order to understand the interconnectivity between the river and the groundwater a groundwater-surface water interaction study was completed.     ABOUT CARITAS LEBANON MIGRANT CENTER Caritas Lebanon Migrant Center (CLMC) is the pre- eminent service provider to refugees and migrants in Lebanon. Established in 1994, it has grown from a modest team of four persons into an organization with ten field offices, three community centers, five shelters and safe houses, and 24 hour presence in the Retention Center for Foreigners and is staffed by a team of over 260 professionals, all with specialized expertise in serving these beneficiaries. CLMC every year serves approximately 5,000 migrant workers and 5,400 Iraqi refugees. It regularly carries out research and needs assessments related to migration and refugee issues in Lebanon, trains other organizations in the Middle East, and contributes to regional advocacy efforts.     Iraq’s Stolen Election: How Assyrian Representation Became Assyrian Repression ABOUT ASSYRIANS An estimated 1.5 million people globally comprise a distinct, indigenous ethnic group. Tracing their heritage to ancient Assyria, Assyrians speak an ancient language referred to as Assyrian, Syriac, Aramaic, or Neo-Aramaic. The contiguous territory that forms the traditional Assyrian homeland includes parts of southern and south- eastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, northern Iraq, and northeastern Syria. The Assyrian population in Iraq, estimated at approximately 200,000, constitutes the largest remaining concentration of the ethnic group in the Middle East. The majority of these reside in their ancestral homelands in the Nineveh Plain and within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Assyrians are predominantly Christian. Some ethnic Assyrians self-identify as Chaldeans or Syriacs, depending on church denomination. Assyrians have founded five Eastern Churches at different points during their long history: the Ancient Church of the East, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Syriac Catholic Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church. The majority of Assyrians who remain in Iraq today belong to the Chaldean and Syriac churches. Assyrians represent one of the most consistently persecuted communities in Iraq and the wider Middle East.     IECS Report 1 The Christians of the Middle East and the current refugee crisis December 2015, Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, Nijmegen Introduction Over the last months, the number of Christians among the refugees that arrived in Europe in general and in the Netherlands in particular has grown considerably. This is not surprising, considering the fact that many Christians are in the middle of the current conflict; they are sometimes targeted directly and are very often affected indirectly. This first IECS Report seeks to shed some light on the particular migration patterns of the Christians during the current crisis. It is important to understand these patterns when thinking of ways to deal with the current crisis and when anticipating its long-term effects, in the Middle East and in the host countries in Europe. The majority of the refugees from the Middle East that have tried to reach Europe with the help of smugglers over the past year are people that already had been displaced in the region for a longer of shorter period. Among them are people who were displaced in the early stages of the war, often from the regions where fighting broke out between government troops and opposition groups (some of which Islamist, others not). Others were fleeing because of 1 their own or their family’s immediate involvement with the liberal non-violent opposition, fearing imprisonment or worse, or avoiding being captured again after a period spent in prison. Since the middle of 2014, these earlier refugees were joined by people fleeing the ISIS-dominated areas in northeastern Syria and northern Iraq.

I am thinking of Theodore Badal, himself seventy thousand Assyrians and seventy million Assyrians, himself Assyria, and man, standing in a barbershop, in San Francisco, in 1933, and being, still, himself, the whole race.” William Saroyan, “Seventy Thousand Assyrians” The twentieth century has not been kind to the Assyrian people. It has brought dislocation and change to this ancient community unmatched since the high-water mark of Assyrian history in the 13th century when the invading Mongols first favored and then encouraged the persecution of the Assyrian community under Il-Khanid rule. The purpose of this paper is to provide a preliminary overview of the current status of the Assyrian Christian community in the Syrian Arab Republic. It is based largely on three field trips to the Khabur in 1993-1996 as well as meetings with Assyrians in Damascus. Syria presents an interesting case because it may be the only Middle Eastern country where the parent Assyrian Church of the East, the so-called "Nestorians," is larger than its Uniate Catholic counterpart, the Chaldean Catholic Church whose head, after the Pope, is the Catholicos of Babylon and the East Raphael I Bidawid (b. 1906 in Alqosh) and based in Baghdad. In most other Middle Eastern countries where they are present - Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey - Assyrians are greatly outnumbered by the Chaldeans. Another exception may be the small Assyrian communities in the Republic of Armenia and other parts of the former Soviet Union (Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Southern Russia), where, as far as I can ascertain, there are no Chaldeans.

    The origin of the Aramean eagle By: David Dag 31st may 2013 Many of us have wondered where the red and yellow flag has gotten its eagle symbol from. And everyone is telling a variety of versions and theories on this subject. I want to shed some light on where it comes from. I will also filter away facts from myths and lies. Where does it come from? The flag is based on an eagle-symbol known as a ”winged sun-disk”. This in turn is hold up or lifted up by three mystical unknown figures whose names are not mentioned in any inscription on the stele itself since there is nothing written on it to confirm their identities. The stele is housed today in the national museum of Aleppo (Halab) in Syria. These and other archeological finds were unearthed by the German archeologist Max Von Oppenheim and his team during their excavations at Tell Halaf (ancient Gozana outside Hassake in Syria) his other finds from the same site are housed in the same museum but also housed at the Pergammon museum in Berlin in Germany. Some have erroneously claimed that it was the French Andre Dupont Sommer who excavated Gozana but this is not true. He is though the author of the book Les Arameens in French, this book in turn was translated into Swedish with the title Arameerna by Gabriel Marawge (the former chairman of the Syriac Universal Alliance, SUA today known as the World Council of Arameans [Syriacs]) It’s also available in Arabic as Al-Aramiyun.
