Macquarie Scorpions Rugby League Football Club Sponsorship Proposals for 2015 MACQUARIE SCORPIONS RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB SPONSORSHIP PROPOSALS FOR 2015 MACQUARIE SCORPIONS RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB Macquarie Scorpions tackle violence head on The Macquarie Scorpions will be wearing their new jerseys with pride this season, as the Club is one of only two local rugby league clubs in the Newcastle and Hunter area selected to take part in the Let’s Tackle Domestic Violence programme which is run by the Department of Premier and Cabinet. The Let’s Tackle Domestic Violence programme sees selected football clubs and club member’s act as ambassadors within the local community against the act of domestic violence. “It is a huge honour that the Macquarie Scorpions were selected to take part in the programme and it will see every club official and team member sign a code of conduct that commits to refraining from domestic violence, agree to become community role models and participate in a community education campaign and display the Tackling Domestic Violence logo on the club jersey, game programmes and supporters merchandise,’ “Both the club and players will also be affiliated with the Good Sports Program, an initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation that assists clubs manage alcohol responsibly as well as participate in a local television and radio campaign to help spread the word of the Let’s Tackle Domestic Violence programme,” said Macquarie Scorpion President, Kevin Maher. The Scorpions are gearing up for a strong 2015 season not only off the field with the Lets’ Tackle Domestic Violence programme but also on the field with its 2015 recruitment drive coming to a close before Christmas. “We have completed our recruitment for 2015 and everything is looking in good shape”. ‘The coaching staff are very happy with their squads and coming into the Christmas break we have over 60 players contracted to start the year and everyone is very positive and upbeat for our chances in 2015,” concluded Kevin. First Grade Coach: Barrie Moore: Barrie is a Macquarie Scorpions junior, playing for the Scorpions senior sides for a number of years before moving into coaching and having great success with Scorpions junior sides. Barry coached lower grades at Kurri Bulldogs before moving to South Newcastle to coach the Reserve Grade side to success. Barry Returned in 2012 to take over the Scorpions Reserve Grade and taking them to a Reserve Grade premiership in 2013 AND WAS First Grade Coach in 2014. Reserve Grade Coach: Shane Ward: Shane has extensive experience as a player at NSW Cup level with North Sydney and also as a player on the Central Coast. Open Grade: Heath Hodges: 2015 will be heath's first year as a senior coach but has extensive experience as player with Macquarie Scorpions and Central. Heath will be assisted by his father Dru who is a very experienced junior coach with the Macquarie United Schoolboys. Newcastle Knights: Affiliated with the Newcastle Knights through the Newcastle Rugby League. Macquarie Scorpions supplies many junior players to the Knights. The Macquarie Scorpions were successful in winning a First Grade Premiership in 1991 and Reserve Grade Premierships in 1974 2006, 2008 and 2013 and were Open Grade Premiers in 2008 the club was beaten grand finalists in 1994, finalist in 1967, 1974 and 1978 and semi finalists in 1968, 1981, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013.

Mr TIM OWEN (Newcastle) [10.02 a.m.]: I support the Sporting Venues Authorities (Venues NSW) Amendment Bill 2011, which was introduced by the great Minister for Sport and Recreation, who is seated at the table. The bill delivers key elements of the Government's policy agenda for building stronger, healthier and more engaged communities. Quite simply, the bill makes sense. Sport and entertainment are at the forefront of bringing regional communities together in good times and in bad. Sporting and entertainment venues—at which one cheers on the local under sevens, has the chance to see a major international performer without having to travel to Sydney, or watches the local footy team beat the opposing side—are the lifeblood of regional communities. The government-owned venues in my electorate that will come under Venues NSW include Ausgrid Stadium, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Newcastle Showground, as well as a number of other venues currently managed by the Hunter Region Sporting Venues Authority. The bill is focused on achieving the best performance of these venues for the people of Newcastle.

    A History of the Football Club, Harker Oval and the Leagues Club History of the WSRLFC Western Suburbs, together with South Newcastle, Central Newcastle and North Newcastle, were the 4 inaugural teams in the Newcastle Rugby League Competition that commence on the 14th May 1910. These 4 clubs played for the Potter Shield. West Suburbs Rugby League Club was formed mainly by players from Lambton Rugby Union Club (the Maroons), and New Lambton Rugby Union Club (the Greens) and many players came from the coal mines in the "Pit Paddock" on the border between Lambton and New Lambton where the high quality "Lambton" coal was mined. The players were dissatisfied with Rugby Union, hence West Rugby League Club was formed, and played in the colours of Red and Green - the red from Lambton Rugby Club and the green from New Lambton Rugby Club. The foundation meeting of the club was held at Smiths Pub in Lambton (now the "Snake Gully"). Bill Balks was elected as President, Tom Shiner as Secretary and Bill Phillips as Treasurer. West's first game on the 14th May 1910 was against South, with the final score being South 18, West 0. Ted Rees was the referee, and the 12 West players were Bradley, Bartley, Kay, Edney, Brien, Milgate, Thornton, Young, Long, Lewsam, Anderton and Thompson. West won the Potter Shield in 1915 (West 16, North 8), in 1916 (West 10. North 8) and in 1922 West won the Cornish Shield and Kerr Cup (West 5, Central 0).     1992 Neil Baker continued as Captain / Coach in First Grade, Geoff Coburn continued on as Reserve Grade Coach and while Wayne Dawson took over Third Grade. WHAT A SEASON!! Following on from 1966 and 1984, West again had a “Golden Year” by winning all 3 Grand Finals...and it was even better than that. West First Grade were undefeated in the competition rounds, and final series, and were awarded the “Clayton Cup”. (The Clayton Cup is awarded to the “Best performing team in Country NSW” – see last 2 pages). West’s winning First Grade side was 1. Greg West (goal) 2. David Wild 3. Darren Treacy (2 tries) 4. Wednesday 23rd June 2021 Owned and Loved by Locals Circulation 6000 N0.23 Knobbly the Pelican saved by team effort For the last decade, Knobbly the pelican, has made himself a resident of the Red Spot fish shop on Little Street in Forster. This might have something to do with his love of mullet! Last month, Tim Love (then Manager of Red Spot) noticed that poor Knobbly had a fishing line stuck in his throat. What happened next is an amazing chain of events that eventually resulted in a recovered Knobbly being released into the channel a few weeks later in front of all his rescuers. On that day, the 11th of May 2021, Tim saw at once that help was needed if Knobbly was to survive. He called the Sweet Pea Vet Clinic who gave him good advice on how to capture a pelican. Tim used a mullet to distract Knobbly while his colleague covered the pelican up with a sheet. Tim then scooped Knobbly up and took Below: Tim Love with Knobbly the Pelican.
