22 DECEMBER 2014 DECEMBER 2014 23 Celebrity riders take the “PATH Home” By Gary Koz Mraz

In 2010, QuickThrottle featured actress Katee Sackhoff in our “Women Who Ride.” Later that year Sackhoff and motorcycle riding compadre, Tricia Helfer motorcycled from L.A. to Louisiana to raise funds for the Gulf Restoration Network. Check out their movie “The LA LA Ride” at www.actingoutlaws.tv Katee and Tricia met on the set of Battlestar Galactica and realized they both loved motorcycles and the ride never stopped.

Their first annual Acting Outlaws PATH Home charity ride was a rousing success. PATH, People Assisting the Homeless, is a family of agencies working together to end homelessness for individuals, families and communities by building housing and providing supportive services in 22 locations from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.

Tricia and Katee are riders and they enlisted other celebrity riders to get involved. They understand that the love of motorcycling brings people together. “Riding brings out the best in everyone and it’s the perfect thread to weave charitable camaraderie. Nearly 80,000 people are languishing on the streets of Southern California alone. These are women with children, people struggling with health issues, war veterans, and teenagers without families. We want in some small way, to help,” Katee said. PATH has spent 30 years working to help our homeless neighbors make it home, and in the last 18 months, has permanently housed over 3,300 individuals, veterans, and families. Learn more at www.epath.org.

You couldn’t ask for better ambassadors than Katee and Tricia – they are totally down to earth, engaging, and completely throw themselves into their passions.

A great mix of motorcyclists and celebrity riders turned out on everything from Harleys and sport bikes to cool vintage motorcycles. Celebrity riders like actor Michael Trucco, comedian David Alan Grier, actor Gilles Marini, Thom Barry of the Cold Case and of course Captain Bluebeard lead the pack. Beautiful weather brought out the best in all of us for the very first PATH Home ride. We staged at the parking lot in La Canada while Peet’s coffee supplied a hot cup of joe. Registration went smoothly and the group headed up the Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch. It was there we were all provided a great lunch and entertained by the house band. The raffle winners walked away with some serious goodies. It was great fun, all for a good cause.

I suggest you pay attention to the Acting Outlaws. These women are serious riders championing a credible cause. Katee and Tricia make everyone feel like family and know how to get the party started.

36 DECEMBER 2014 DECEMBER 2014 37 These men are my life. My husband, Matt has known them for so many years, and each one of them is considered a brother to him, and now to me. The man on the back of the motorcycle behind the man with the long gray beard is Gavin, a man whom I had the honor to know and love, but not for long enough. The long gray beard on the front of the bike is Art (Grizz), who rode out from NM to CA to take Gavin on his last ride.

Gavin was diagnosed with Cancer a mere 11 months before he passed. These two men knew each other since Jr. High. Gavin was living with my husband and myself through his entire illness up until 2 weeks before he passed away, at which point he needed round the clock care, and we were both working full time and couldn’t provide it. Weeks before he died, Gavin went into the hospital and made my husband promise that he get to go on one last ride, and so a last ride he got. We had to tie strap Gav onto the back of Art because he was too weak to hold on. By the time he was off the bike, there wasn’t a dry eye in site, as you can well imagine. His family, blood or brotherhood, were there to watch him ride and lend support and love. I was honored to photograph it from the back of Gavin’s truck that my husband drove just to allow me to capture it all.

There were 2 clubs involved, Art is a standing member in the VNV, and Gavin was in the Devils Disciples. I feel this group of men have a great message in their story, showing that no club can separate Brotherhood. Gavin died on October 17th 2012, this ride happened on October 6th, just 11 days before. He has been missed every day after by so many.
