Americanization and Cultural Preservation in Seattle's Settlement House: A Jewish Adaptation of the Anglo-American Model of Settlement Work ALISSA SCHWARTZ New York City This articleexamines the dual agendas of Americanization and preserva- tion of Ashkenazic Jewish culture through an historicalanalysis of the work of Seattle's Settlement House, a social service center founded in 1906 by elite, Americanized Jews to serve poorer, immigrant Jews of Ashkenazic and Sephardic origin. Such analysis is set against the ideologicalbackdrop of Anglo-Americanism which pervaded the field of social work in its early efforts at self-definition and professionalization.Particular attention is paid to the role of the arts at Settlement House, with comparisons to Chicago's Hull-House, the prototypical American settlement operating at the turn of the century. This case study analyzes a German Jewish adaptationof an Anglo-American, Christian model of social work. -

Translating Expertise Across Work Contexts: U.S. Puppeteers Move

Holma Abstract Expertise is a key currency in today’s knowledge economy. Yet as experts increasingly move across work contexts, how expertise translates across contexts is less well understood. Here, we examine how a shift in context—which reorders the relative attention experts pay to distinct types of audiences—redefines what it means to be an expert. Our study’s setting is an established expertise in the creative industry: puppet manipulation. Through an examination of U.S. puppeteers’ move from stage to screen (i.e., film and television), we show that, although the two settings call on mostly similar techniques, puppeteers on stage ground their claims to expertise in a dialogue with spectators and view expertise as achieving believability; by contrast, puppeteers on screen invoke the need to deliver on cue when dealing with producers, directors, and co-workers and view expertise as achieving task mastery. When moving between stage and screen, puppeteers therefore prioritize the needs of certain audiences over others’ and gradually reshape their own views of expertise. Our findings embed the nature of expertise in experts’ ordering of types of audiences to attend to and provide insights for explaining how expertise can shift and become co-opted by workplaces. Radiant Impressions Note to Teachers UCI Institute and Museum of California Art (IMCA) aims to be a resource to educators and students by offering school visits, programs, digital tools, and activities designed for grades 3–12 that contribute to the development of stronger critical-thinking skills, empathy, and curiosity about art and culture. When students are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in discussing and creating art, they awaken their imaginations and nurture their creative and innovative potential. School visits offer opportunities for students to develop observation and interpretation skills using visual and sensory information, build knowledge independently and with one another, and cultivate an interest in artistic production. This Teacher Resource Guide includes essays, artist biographies, strategies for interdisciplinary curriculum integration, discussion questions, methods for teaching with objects, a vocabulary list, and activities for three works in IMCA’s collection that are included in the exhibition Radiant Impressions. About the Exhibition From California Impressionism to the Light and Space movement, California artists have been celebrated for their skillful rendering of the perceptual effects of light. Focusing on painters working in California throughout the 20th century, Radiant Impressions considers the ways these artists have engaged with light not only for its optical qualities Radiant Impressions but also for its power to infuse ephemeral moments with meaning and emotion. Whether the warm golden tones of the California sun or the intense glow of electric bulbs, light in these paintings communicates a sense of anticipation, celebration, rest, and reflection. Presenting works organized in thematic groupings—The Domestic Realm and Work, Capturing the Scene, Play and the Social Sphere, and Lighting the Portrait—the exhibition brings together a diverse selection of landscapes and portraiture as well as genre scenes depicting people at work and at play. -

Located in the heart of Beverly Hills as the cornerstone of the golden triangle, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (The Wallis) officially opens its doors to the public on October 15-18, 2013 with a dedication ceremony and a series of Galas, followed by programming beginning November 8 with the Martha Graham Dance Company. This new venue transforms a Beverly Hills city block, facing Santa Monica Boulevard, between Crescent and Canon Drives, into the first performing arts center to be built there: a vibrant arts destination and a major cultural and education hub for audiences of every age, with two distinct, elegant buildings: the renovated historic 1934 Italianate-style Beverly Hills Post Office and the new, contemporary 500-seat, state-of-the-art Bram Goldsmith Theater. Together these two structures embrace the city’s history and future, creating a new artistic and visual landmark, and an entryway into Beverly Hills’ fabled shopping district. ATLANTA (January 14, 2014) – Center for Puppetry Arts officials announced today details on the organization’s highly anticipated renovation and expansion plans. The project, set to be completed in 2015, will include a new museum, with a Global Collection and the world’s most comprehensive collection of Jim Henson’s puppets and artifacts. Project highlights also include a new library and archival space, a renovated entryway and many other upgrades to existing spaces that will ultimately enhance the experience for Center for Puppetry Arts’ visitors. As the nation’s largest nonprofit dedicated to the art of puppetry, these updates will allow the organization to continue to touch even more lives through the art of puppetry while giving guests a new appreciation for the global scope and universal power of the art form. As part of the project, the Center is protecting and preserving hundreds of international and Henson treasures for future generations to explore and understand. In 2007, Jim Henson’s family announced a momentous gift of puppets and props to the Center for Puppetry Arts. Approximately half of the expanded museum space will be dedicated to the Jim Henson Collection, which will feature recognizable puppets from Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal and Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. Featured icons will include Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, Bert, Ernie and many more. -

California Art Club Artists Showcase the Golden State’s Coastal Beauty with Painting California: Seascapes and Beach Towns, unveiling June 28 at the USC Pacific Asia Museum The Month-Long Display, which Shares the Name of a Book Published about the Century-Old Arts Organization, Spotlights Beloved Sites Where Land Meets the Pacific Ocean PASADENA, Calif. – The California Art Club celebrates the Golden State’s defining natural beauty with the exhibition Painting California: Seascapes and Beach Towns, on view from June 28 to July 29 at the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. The exhibition features classic beach imagery along the state’s famed coastline and iconic Pacific Coast Highway. The nearly 45 paintings include not only pristine vistas of unspoiled beaches and dramatic seaside cliffs, such as Crystal Cove and Diver’s Cove in the southern part of the state and the Monterey peninsula and its signature Cypress trees to the north, but also beloved landmarks, including the Santa Monica Pier and the Venice Canals. Painting California: Seascapes and Beach Towns shares the name of the 276-page deluxe book published about the century-old organization in 2017 by Skira Rizzoli.
