PLANT Todea barbara King Fern AUS SA AMLR Endemism Life History Pre-1983 AMLR filtered records indicate a wider historic distribution across the central MLR from Mount - E E - Perennial Crawford to Mount Bold.4 Family OSMUNDACEAE Other known populations occur (no official records exist) at Black Hill CP (2 plants only), Scott Creek, Summertown (12 plants), Sturt Gorge, Cleland, Eagle Mountain Bike Park, Giles/Horsnell Gully, Magic Valley, Deep Creek and Basket Range (K. Brewer and J. Smith pers. comm.). Habitat Recorded habitat in the AMLR includes swamps, swampy gullies and creekbeds.6 All extant populations occur adjacent to permanent water, springs or soaks. Habitat is typically shrubland of Leptospermum lanigerum and Acacia provincialis over sedges and ferns including Gahnia sieberiana, Baumea tetragona and Blechnum spp. Permanent water/seepage is the principal limiting factor underpinning its distribution (T. Jury pers. comm.). Within the AMLR the preferred broad vegetation groups are Heathy Open Forest and Wetland.4 Within the AMLR the species’ degree of habitat 4 Photo: © Ann Prescott specialisation is classified as ‘Very High’. Conservation Significance Biology and Ecology In SA, the majority of the distribution is confined within Establishes via fine spores which disperse long the AMLR, disjunct from the remaining extant distances. Fire will kill plants.5 distribution in other States. Within the AMLR the species’ relative area of occupancy is classified as Aboriginal Significance ‘Extremely Restricted’. Relative to all AMLR extant Post-1983 records indicate the entire AMLR distribution species, the species' taxonomic uniqueness is occurs in Kaurna Nation (bordering Peramangk classified as ‘Very High’.4 Nation).4 Description Threats Fern with short rhizome. Erect, to 30 cm tall (in SA); Threats include access of livestock to watercourses fronds to 2 m long, clustered at the top of the and wetlands, flood scouring, overgrowth of rhizome.3 understorey, weeds (Broom, Blackberry, Arundo), altered water regimes and management, drought and Distribution and Population Phytophthora (K. Brewer and J. Smith pers. comm.).6,7 Also occurs in QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS and ACT.1,2 Very limited within the AMLR region, however the Within SA, only occurs in the AMLR region. Records for majority of known distribution occurs within 2 km of KI are questionable.7 Approximately 500 plants known confirmed or suspected Phytophthora infestations.4 in SA. More common in eastern Australia.7 Additional current direct threats have been identified Post-1983 AMLR filtered records restricted to Cleland and rated for this species.
