Herman Miller Seating CAPER CHAIR DESIGN STORY Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber, cool, colourful Caper chairs help people quickly and easily come together, move around, and move apart--whatever the work requires. They are ideal for informal and flexible spaces where reconfiguration is encouraged, smaller scale is important, and budget is a concern. • easy to move, lightweight and uses limited floor space • seat and back are perforated with holes to let air pass through, helping to maintain a constant skin temperature • with casters or glides a stack of up to six chairs can be easily transported • 100 percent recyclable • waterfall seat edge helps maintain proper leg circulation • stacking chairs with ganging connectors can be easily linked to maintain orderly rows of properly-spaced seating; connectors come installed and don’t interfere with stacking APPLICATIONS Meeting Rooms Training Rooms Cafeteria Exam Rooms Procedure Rooms Patient Rooms lc ERGON CHAIR DESIGN STORY In 1976 the Ergon chair revolutionized office seating by introducing ergonomics to the North American market for the first time. Herman Miller and designer Bill Stumpf, conducted 10 years of research on how people really sit when they work. Consultations with orthopedic surgeons and cardiovascular specialists were conducted to understand the effects of seating and the seated posture on the body’s circulatory system, muscles and bones. The Ergon was developed to help reduced physiological stress by providing exceptional spinal support and unrestricted blood flow. • high-performance, highly adjustable, and thickly cushioned seating in three sizes for long-term work • sitting pocket naturally aligns the body in the most comfortable posture that cradles the user • high backrest maintains the spine's natural curve and supports the upper back • soft edges and a waterfall seat front help maintain proper circulation • no pressure, when the user leans back, feet stay flat on the floor and the front edge of the seat doesn't rise APPLICATIONS Offices Nurse Care Stations Doctors Offices Laboratory Pharmacy Meeting Rooms Conference Rooms lc ASIDE CHAIR DESIGN STORY Designed by Mark Goetz, the Aside chair offers superior comfort and quality. With double-thick seat cushions, high and wide backs, and supportive contours, it is uniquely supportive and comfortable. A fixed-position seat extends below the chair frame for great support and comfort. • curved rear legs extend out beyond the back, keeping the chair from marking the walls and surrounding furniture • stacks five high on the floor • available with several different caster and glide options to accommodate hard floors and carpets • all chair parts are 100% recyclable with recycling and stacking instructions molded into the bottom of the seat pan • a high, wide back and broad seat accommodate a large variety of users APPLICATIONS Meeting Rooms Training Rooms Cafeteria Exam Room Procedure Rooms Patient Rooms Registration Triage Waiting Rooms lc EQUA CHAIR DESIGN STORY In developing the Equa chair, introduced in 1984, designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick analyzed the changes and trends in office work. They found that office seating was becoming more specialized in terms of how people sit in chairs and the types of tasks they perform. They felt that a chair has to respond and interact with the person sitting in it, and do that automatically, without requiring the person to manipulate a host of buttons and knobs. In 1989, Time Magazine selected the Equa Chair as “Design of the Decade”. • key to the chair's passive ergonomic design, is its one-piece H-shaped shell where the seat and back act independently providing good back support • an opening in the shell allows air to circulate that prevents heat buildup during long term sitting • a few easy adjustments fine-tune the fit for simple operation • optional tilt-lock feature secures the work chair in an upright position for work-intensive postures • waterfall front edge reduces pressure under the thighs so circulation isn't restricted • stools have a tilt option APPLICATIONS Nurse Station Sterile Processing Laboratory Pharmacy lc AERON CHAIR DESIGN STORY Herman Miller turned to designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick to revolutionize seating when it introduced the Aeron Chair in 1994. The design that fulfilled the anthropometric and environmental criteria, met all expectations and shattered some of them. It wasn't upholstered. It wasn't padded. It didn't look like any other office chair. And its revolutionary concept incorporated more patentable ideas than any previous Herman Miller research program. Millions of Aeron chairs have been shipped to customers all over the world. The Aeron chair was cited as “Design of the Decade” by Business Week in the 1990’s. • air can pass through the Pellicle, allowing the sitter to stay cool and comfortable • Kinemat Tilt lets people move naturally and effortlessly, from forward-leaning through reclining • the backrest and seat pan move in proper relation for correct support in all positions • PostureFit breakthrough, provides natural, custom-fitted lower-back support below for healthier posture and outstanding lower-back comfort • work stool matches the work chair's performance and incorporates a height-adjustable foot ring that moves up and down with the seat pan APPLICATIONS Sterile Processing Physicians Conference Areas Chiropractors Allied Health Laboratory Diagnostic Imaging Pharmacy Nurses Dentists Naturopathic Doctors lc MIRRA CHAIR DESIGN STORY Studio 7.5, envisioned a chair that was like a second skin, like a shadow of the sitter, when it was introduced in 2003. The chair's flexible back design is based on research involving the laser scanning of several thousand subjects in different postures, and with a wide variance in back shape, particularly between women and men. Mirra is designed to accommodate 95 % of the world's population. Working with Bill McDonough, co-founder and principal of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, Mirra represents the most advanced and complete application of the Cradle-to-Cradle design protocols to date. Mirra has won numerous Environmental Awards and was recognized in the 2003 BuildingGreen Top-10 products. • geometric shapes in the back create flex zones in the upper, lumbar and sacral areas conforming to a person’s size, posture, and movements • an elastomeric suspension seat follows the contours of the body, distributes pressure evenly and provides aeration • sitter adjusts the seat depth without moving the seat pan; there's never a gap between the seat and backrest • made of a minimal number of parts and is easily disassembled for recycling APPLICATIONS Sterile Processing Physicians Conference Areas Chiropractors Allied Health Laboratory Diagnostic Imaging Pharmacy Nurses Dentists Naturopathic Doctors lc FORAY CHAIR DESIGN STORY Foray was introduced by Geiger in 2006. Designed by Eric Chan and informed by Geiger's expertise in executive workspaces, Foray continues the legacy of collaborating with innovative designers to create modern classics. Foray displays classic architectural forms eased by fluid, unbroken contours, inspired by the shape of the palm of a nurturing hand. Foray combines executive–level luxury and comfort with task–seating performance. Foray was designed according to a strict Cradle to Cradle protocol for environmental sustainability. • instantly makes the sitter more effective with an array of intuitive, user-defined options as well as carefully engineered materials selected for strength and durability • features a form-fitting back cushion, ergonomically adjustable arm pads and tilt tension control • patented “Super Seat” suspension system provides long-term comfort, enhancing productivity by eliminating fatigue • back is specially contoured to ensure that the user sits erect, with pelvis rotated forward, so that his properly aligned spine can carry the bulk of his upper body weight as intended • designed according to a strict Cradle-to-Cradle protocol, which measures the human and environmental health impacts throughout the chair’s life APPLICATIONS Executive Offices Personal Workspaces lc EMBODY CHAIR DESIGN STORY Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber, Herman Miller introduced Embody in 2008. Over the past 30 years, Herman Miller’s seating products have built the foundation of research and knowledge for the next. Herman Miller once again reinvents the reference point for ergonomics by designing a chair that actually enhances your health. Embody restores balance to the human/ computer relationship by supporting both your mind and your body. It’s design is based on extensive research including; the study of biomechanics, seating behaviours and postures, anthropometric data, metabolic measures, and tissue perfusion. • back adapts to your unique spinal curvature; allowing you to move freely and naturally to improve blood flow and eliminate discomfort and distraction • narrow back allows your arms to move back and forth naturally; opening up the chest cavity and letting your lungs intake more air sending more oxygen to the brain • removes stresses on your body at every contact point; accommodates a diverse population • reduced pressure improves circulation and facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within cells, keeping you mentally fresh and comfortable • stabilizes your pelvis in the seat pocket in every position and supports your thoracic back while correctly aligning your eyes with the computer screen • seat surface length expands and contracts to reduce pressure on the thighs APPLICATIONS All applications where employees utilize the computer for work. lc .

  • DEAR SHAREHOLDER Our Business Reality Has
2003 HE DEAR SHAREHOLDER Our business reality has been—in a word—unreal. Over the past year, the economy— especially the business-to-business sector in which we operate—was suspended in a state of wait-and-see. Wars and rumors of terrorist threats kept many people and businesses awash in anxiety. When the present is characterized by chaos and confusion, and the future prospects are just too uncertain to predict, buying o÷ce furniture generally drops near the bottom of the priority list. But it is counterproductive to dwell on the things you can’t control—so we spent our time working on the things within our control. Our central aim was to better position the company for growth and profitability in the future. None of the work was easy. A great deal of it was joyless—telling good people that we no longer had enough work for them . eliminating programs . consolidating operations and facilities. We’re not thrilled about the kind of work we’ve had to do, but we are proud of how we’ve handled the situation. Although our sales fell $132 million last year, cash flow from operations was $145 million, an increase of more than $90 million from the prior year. On a percent-of-sales basis, our gross margin improved 1.7 percentage points, a testimony to our continuous improvement e≈orts and the Herman Miller Production System. Total R operating expenses, which include restructuring charges, declined by MAN M I L L E more than $144 million from the prior year. Through all of this, we were able to maintain our level of spending on research and development.
