A Grade Match Report - Round 7 Stats Leaders - 3/2/2010 By Paul Ainslie V Woodville Rech @ Matheson Reserve Grade Batting Runs Bowling Fielding Catches

We travelled to Matheson Reserve to take on Woody Rech, JT won the toss and elected to bat A Jarrad Taylor 448 Jarrad Taylor 15 Jarrad Taylor 5 on what looked to be a nice flat track. A Michael Fraser 229 Ed Williams 12 Michael Fraser 3 JT and Ainslie got off to a solid start before Ains went and the score was 1/42. This brought Fraser to the crease, and he and JT took the total to 78 before JT was dismissed for 46. Frase B Damian Sullivan 191 Leigh Horan 27 Tory Minervini 6 continued hitting the ball well and with Starry took the score to 2/157, before Starry was fired LBW for supposedly not offering a shot (I think a little Urb’s influence over the Ump). Frase and B Leigh Robertson 161 Damian Sullivan 16 Vince Minervini 3 Tom Saint then took us to 3/175 at tea and looking in a commanding position. Unfortunately Frase was dismissed just after tea for a very solid 63, we then lost another quick wicket to be C Tate Spurgeon 95 Andrew Vesey 12 Tate Spurgeon 4 5/179. Tommy Saint continued to work the ball around and was eventually out caught to a half tracker from their ‘spinner’ for 42. Dan Gill and got us off to a good start bowling some good T20 Jarrad Taylor 226 Dean Gough 6 Jarrad Taylor 3 lines and restricting them to about 2 runs per over. Then Goughy and Ben Gill continued the quality bowling until eventually Benny picked up the first wicket. Their number 3 started to go T20 Chadd Sayers 125 Bradford Parker 4 Chris Wheatley 3 after our bowling and that’s when we turned to JT and Sainter to try and turn the match and that they did, with JT getting the next wicket, each of them bowling a long spell of economical bowling, while still taking regular wickets throughout. JT finished with 15 overs 3/32, and Tommy Saint 22.3 overs 5/60. So we managed to get Rechy’s all out for 208, and another good win by the Reds. In a match where 37 wickets were lost for 353 runs, the game ended up On a nice windy evening we strolled out to Ledger Reserve to be greeted by a brief with the points essentially being shared between the two teams. On day 1, Woodville South sent us patch of rain and a pitch that was watered that morning, so no surprises when I won into bat on what appeared to be a flat wicket. This decision was well warranted when they had us in the toss and bowled. trouble at 4 for 43. It only got worse, with wickets consistently falling to have Flinders Park bowled out for 76 in 36.4 overs. Best of the batsmen was Simon Ballestrin (18) and Sean Conaghty (15).

On a pitch the suited medium pace, we used 5 bowlers for their maximum and re- With 40 overs still to be bowled for the day, it looked like the game was over providing Woodville stricted Woody Sth to 5/114 off their 20 overs. All of our bowlers bowled in good South could put together a few partnerships to beat our small total. But as with out innings, wickets fell areas and helped restrict Woody Sth from posting a big total. Wickets were shared consistently to have Woodville South 5/20, with a real possibility of victory in sight, considering only 9 around, with Dean Gough and Chadd Sayers each taking 2 wickets, and JT with his wickets were needed due to an injury to a Woodville South batsman. Jason Soar (3/34) and Leigh Horan (5/20) kept up the good work to have Woodville South dismissed for 55, giving Flinders Park meds and the Gilly boys all taking 1 each. 1st innings points.

The chase got off to a good start of 20 runs after 2 overs, then we lost our first On day 2, the game essentially restarted, but with a similar result in the second innings on a testing wicket, which bought Chaddy Sayers to the crease to join JT. They put on 69 for the pitch. Another middle order collapse (5/5 for wickets 4-8) had us 8/41. Some resistance for the last second wicket, making us 1/82. We then lost JT and Tory in quick succession to be two wickets saw the total creep to 99 on a pitch that was two paced. Best of the batsmen were Soar (29) and Horan (17n.o). 4/99 with about 9 overs to spare. We then got to Woody Sth score of 114 after 15 overs, however we made it as hard as possible by losing 3 wickets in 3 overs without scoring that vital last run, until the saviour Goughy came in and hit the one run Going into bowl again, we had a 120 run lead that Woodville South would need to get outright vic- required. We finished 7/115 off 18.4 overs. tory. This time, Woodville South only had 9 fit batsmen which worked in our favour if we could get down to the tail. Things started well with the game in the balance at 5/54. Unfortunately, the next few batsmen put together substantial partnerships which appeared to have Woodville South on the path to victory. Another twist at the end saw the 2 nd to last wicket fall with 4 runs needed. With only 2 runs This puts us 3-1 and looking solid to make the knockout phase of the competition. needed, a ’sitter’ of a catch was put down which would have given us the win. After a day riddled with poor batting, fielding and testing conditions, this put the final nail in our coffin and Woodville South went on to win second innings points.
