Canadians love sports. They love Canadian football. They also love celebrations. Did you know that Canadian football will soon have a big celebration? The Canadian Football League will play its 100th Grey Cup football game on November 25. The Grey Cup is like America’s Super Bowl. The winner of the Grey Cup is the Canadian Football League champion. Canadian football is exciting to watch, like American football. But it is different from American football in some ways. Some rules are different. The Canadian football field is larger. The scoring is different. Another big difference is when the season begins. America’s National Football League season begins in August. Their last game is the Super Bowl championship in February. But winters are much colder in Canada, so the Canadian Football League begins in June. Their last game is the Grey Cup championship in November, before the cold winter begins. The East Division includes teams from Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton and Winnipeg. The West Division includes teams from British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Edmonton. The teams played 18 regular season games. The best six teams started the playoffs November 11. The East Division champion will play the West Division champion in the Grey Cup. The Grey Cup is in a different city each year. Last year, it was in Vancouver. The British Columbia Lions were the 2011 champions. Toronto is excited to have the 100th Grey Cup game, in 2012. The government has printed special postage stamps with pictures of the Canadian football stars. Canadian Grey Cup 100 Train football even has a special train to honor the game. The Grey Cup 100 train visited more than 100 Canadian cities. The train was a Canadian football museum on wheels. It even carried the Grey Cup trophy! Toronto Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen is having a 10-day Grey Cup Festival before the game. Fans will go to concerts, parties, a parade and then the big game. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering.

Combined Operating Income for Exhibition Place and Allstream Centre for the eleven months ended November 30, 2012 before net naming fees, building loan interest and amortization expense for the Allstream Centre was $1,072,969 compared to a budget (loss) of ($724,150) for a favourable variance of $1,797,119. Net Income (loss) for Exhibition Place and Direct Energy Centre for the eleven months ended November 30, 2012 was $441,847 compared to a budget (loss) of ($861,273) for a favourable variance of $1,303,120 primarily due to lower utilities, lower grounds maintenance due to minimal snow, warmer weather and lower building operating costs. Operating Income before interest and amortization expense for Allstream Centre for the eleven months ended November 30, 2012 was $631,122 compared to a budget of $137,123 for a favourable variance of $493,999. The Sales & Marketing team secured 16 new events for Exhibition Place. As of November 30, 2012, Exhibition Place staff have serviced 304 events compared to 271 in 2011 and 263 in 2010. In addition staff continue to support the tenant events on the grounds and the public’s use of the parkland. On November 22nd, the Allstream Centre sales team partnered with Cerise Fine Catering for a holiday luncheon for prospective clients. The event was a great success and RFPs were received as a result. Exhibition Place’s Recognition Committee received 84 staff nominations for the October/November period. The Year End Winner will be announced on December 11th.

    23 Ron Lancaster The man known as ‘The Little General’ began his career with the Roughriders in 1963 after being acquired in a trade from the Ottawa Rough Riders. Lancaster, who hailed from Fairchance, Pa., went on to play 16 seasons at quarterback for the Green and White before retiring in 1978. Lancaster retired as the CFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (50,535) and still holds Saskatchewan’s franchise records in career pass attempts (5,834), completions (3,186), yards (46,710) and touchdown passes (299). He was named a West Division all-star seven times (1966, 1968-70, 1973, 1975-76) and a CFL all-star four times (1970, ’73, ’75 and ’76) and won the Schenley Award as the league’s most outstanding player twice (1970 and ’76). Lancaster helped the Roughriders win the first Grey Cup title in franchise history in 1966 — they beat Ottawa 29-14 — and played in four other CFL championship games. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Roughriders’ Plaza of Honour in 1987. After his playing career ended, Lancaster had a successful run as a colour commentator on CFL telecasts and as a coach and administrator in the league with the Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He guided both the Eskimos and Tiger-Cats to CFL titles as a head coach and posted 142 career wins in his coaching career. Lancaster’s number 23 was retired by the Roughriders on June 21, 1979. He died on Sept. 18, 2008, after suffering a heart attack.

    Roughrider General Managers Jeremy O’Day 2015, 2019-Current Jeremy O’Day was named vice president of football operations & general manager on January 18, 2019. This is O’Day’s second tenure as the Riders’ general manager after he was officially named the franchises 15th general manager on August 31, 2015 – a positional he held on an interim basis for the final nine games of that season. The former Roughriders offensive lineman moved into the front office after retiring as a player in February 2011, accepting the position of football operations co-ordinator. In 2012 he was named assistant general manager, a position he held for the next four years. In December of 2015, O’Day was named assistant vice president of football operations & administration under Chris Jones. In this role, O’Day led many day-to-day football operations activities, including player evaluations, contract negotiations, and co-ordinating training camp, mini camps and free-agent camps. He also participated in the scouting of NFL, NCAA and U Sports games. O’Day’s playing career in the CFL began in 1997, when he joined the Toronto Argonauts after a standout career at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He played two seasons with the Argos, winning a Grey Cup with them in 1997. In 1999, O’Day signed as a free agent with Saskatchewan and spent the next 12 seasons on the Riders’ offensive line. He started 202 regular-season games for Saskatchewan, which ranks him 12th on the club’s all-time list of games played. He also appeared in 16 playoff games and three Grey Cup games with the Roughriders, helping them win the CFL title in 2007.

    INFORMATION BULLETIN BC PLACE REVITALIZATION FINAL COST VANCOUVER, BC: BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo) announced today the final cost for the new BC Place is $514 million. The final approved budget for the stadium revitalization project was $563 million. The project was completed $49 million under budget primarily through savings achieved during the Phase 2 Retractable Roof project. BC Place was revitalized in two stages over a period of more than three years, involving more than 5000 skilled professionals and tradespeople. BC Place was awarded ‘Project of the Year’ at the StadiumBusiness Awards in Italy, in May 2012. The stadium has also been nominated for the BC Hydro PowerSmart Excellence Awards in the ‘New Construction’ Category – achieving approximately 38 per cent in electrical savings from eliminating the old air-supported roof. Furthermore, the Rick Hansen foundation recently featured BC Place as an “Accessible Success Story” - for ‘new accessible features of a community facility’. Reopening September 30, 2011, the new BC Place became the new home to Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and home to the returning BC Lions Football Club and the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
