    Moorlands: People, Places, Stories Exploring people’s experiences of the Upper Nidderdale moorland through time What do the moorlands mean to you? These personal accounts reveal much about the history of the moorlands, a personal history that is not written down. Here we have an opportunity to preserve our moorland heritage by capturing aspects of history and experiences that would otherwise be lost, and to look at the landscape through different eyes. Guidance Sheet A (V1) Why the moorlands? The moorlands have been influenced by humans over thousands of years, with successive generations finding different ways to exploit the area’s rich resources, leaving their mark as clues for future generations. We hope that the project will help capture the character of the moorland landscape and of the people that live, work, and enjoy them. Join the team Moorlands: People, Places, Stories will be delivered by a newly formed volunteer group. Training will be provided and the team will be supported by Louise Brown (Historic Nidderdale Project Officer), oral history consultant Dr Robert Light, and landscape archaeologist Dr Jonathan Finch from the University of York. It is hoped that documents and photographs shared by interviewees might spark interest in carrying out some additional research. There will be the opportunity for those that are interested to become affiliated to the University of York in order to access online resources, as well as being able to access the archives held by Nidderdale Museum and at North Yorkshire County Council.

    Sunday, September 18, 2016 Wheel Easy Ride Report 541 Short Ride There were only four of us for the short ride today but it is quality not quantity that counts. So Dennis, Corinne and Malcolm joined me for a jaunt through the sunny countryside. Having been warned that the area around Beckwithshaw would be busy with a Harrogate Harriers Trail Race we opted for Oakdale Bridge and Pennypot Lane, but with Pot Bank closed for the race Pennypot was even more than usual a busy race track. But we survived and turned off to cross the A59 at the Black Bull, the swooped down into Kettlesing. We dawdled along quiet sunlit back lanes coming across the house with a magnificent flower display (photo), and arrived at Clapham Green before making haste for the inevitable Sophie Stop at Hampsthwaite. Lots of cyclists were doing a Leeds 100 event and arrived but we were comfortably ensconced in the garden and were not moving whatever arrived! Soon Steve and Neeta Wilson appeared and also joined us in the garden. Eventually we headed homeward along Hollybank Lane and the Greenway. Twenty exceptionally pleasant miles in the early autumn sunshine. Martin W Slow-Medium Ride There were two gents and eight ladies for today's ride and we set off for Boroughbridge in glorious sunshine. Lovely to see Ruth back with us after a little break over the summer. The route had to be changed from the one posted on the Internet as I was not sure of the way. We rode to Knaresborough, Abbey Road and turned right to the Wetherby Road.

Built in the 17th century the Pateley Bridge. hall was the seat of the Yorke family, Nidderdale’s major landowners at the time. It is hoped that by this arrangement the material will be more conveniently accessible to the majority of researchers. A few items, however, remain at Ripon because they are currently in use or are on permanent display to visitors. The cathedral was a parish church before it was raised to its present status and the parish registers are deposited at the North Yorkshire County Record Office, Northallerton. This list includes both the material remaining at Ripon and that at Northallerton. The archives of the Dean and Chapter have been listed twice before. A summary list was prepared for the Pilgrim Trust in 1946. A much fuller list was compiled for the National Register of Archives (Historical Manuscripts Commission) and issued in 1959. Upon the archives being inspected after their arrival at Leeds it was immediately apparent that the collection contained even more than had been listed in 1959, and it was decided with the ready concurrence of the Commission, that a new listing would be essential. This new list has been designed to avoid as much confusion as possible. It follows the style and numeration of the 1959 list and new entries have been inserted as close as possible to suitable places within its original framework. Some documents had identifications unrelated to the serial numbers used in that list; they have now been numbered to correspond and the additional items have been given appropriate subdivisions within the original notation.
