WASHINGTON, DC 1 WELCOME TO TEMPLE SINAI Temple Sinai is a vibrant place of learning with a respected nursery school, a thriving religious school, an active teen program, and varied adult education classes and lectures. Our library is filled with excellent Jewish resources. We offer a variety of worship services on Friday evenings, Saturdays, Holy Days, and holidays as well as during festivals. Organized in 1951, Temple Sinai is a Reform Jewish con- gregation affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ). The Reform movement has enabled the Jewish people to introduce innovation while preserving tradition, embrace diversity while asserting commonality, affirm beliefs without rejecting those who doubt, and bring faith to sacred texts without sacrificing critical scholarship. We have a proud tradition of being at the forefront of social justice, working with religious and secular groups 2 OUR SANCTUARY AND SHABBAT SERVICES throughout the Washington, DC, area on social action. We are a congregation that embraces the needs of our diverse membership. We welcome all people. We know that our congregation’s strength rests on a caring, welcoming community of Jewish life from birth to death. We support each member’s unique value and continue to build a strong foundation for the future. The cornerstone, set in 1956 at the front doors of the main entrance, is a relic from the third wall of ancient Jerusalem. The stone was excavated in 1925 and the founding documents of the congregation are sealed in a case under the stone. TEMPLE SINAI . WASHINGTON, DC 3 THE TREASURES IN OUR SANCTUARY Every synagogue contains religious symbols that evoke centuries of Jewish history. In Temple Sinai’s main sanctuary, we are surrounded by religious sacred objects that are also works of art. Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark). The centerpiece of the Boris Aronson bimah is the ark, the sacred cabinet containing the (1899–1980) conceived the Torah scrolls. WASHINGTON, DC 5 6 OUR SANCTUARY AND SHABBAT SERVICES THE TREASURES IN OUR SANCTUARY CONTINUED Ner tamid (eternal light). Above the ark, the flame of thener tamid is always lit. The flame is sheltered in a pomegranate, a biblical fruit with many allegorical interpretations. The ner tamid is placed in a triangle representing the one shaped by fingers of the high priest raising both hands in benediction to bless the congregation. Above these hands curves a shofar (ram’s horn), which in ancient times was blown to summon the congregation to prayer. Its penetrating call—said to reach to the throne of God— continues to be heard on the High Holy Days of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. The curve of the shofar culminates in the letter yod, which stands for God. The Torah scrolls. The Torah, the most revered and sacred object of Jewish ritual, is the handwritten scroll of the Five Books of Moses. The Torah is written on parchment rolled around two wooden poles. It is kept in the ark with a cloth covering, often adorned with rimonim (silver ornaments) and a breastplate. The text of the Torah, unchanged through countless generations, is scribed by hand and must be letter-perfect. Of the Torah scrolls in our sanctuary, the tallest one has a special significance. It was written in 1780 for the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague, Czech Republic. It is one of hundreds of Torah scrolls rescued after the Holocaust and distributed to synagogues throughout the world by the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust. See pages 12 and 15 for more about the Torah. TEMPLE SINAI . WASHINGTON, DC 7 THE TREASURES IN OUR SANCTUARY CONTINUED The doors of the ark. On an enameled background of blues and greens, the doors of the ark present an intricate sculpture of Judaic symbols and Hebrew words. The designs in four rows read from right to left, as does Hebrew. The Hebrew word kadosh (holy). The ark contains the Torah, the one object in the sanctuary considered holy. A red menorah (candelabrum). This plaque in three segments depicts a blue chuppah (marriage canopy), representing Judaism’s commitment to the perpetuation of life, according to the commandment, “Be fruitful and multiply.” 8 OUR SANCTUARY AND SHABBAT SERVICES The Lion of Judah (mentioned in Genesis) is depicted in orange. The Magen David (Star of David) is an ancient symbol of the Jewish people. A landscape of arcs highlights three Hebrew letters to the right of the menorah: shin, dalet, and yod—spelling the word Shaddai, an early name for God. A garnet-colored water jug represents the ancient Levites, drawers of water at the Temple. Another inscription of kadosh is positioned at the top of the plaque. A scroll of the Book of Esther and a second Magen David. TEMPLE SINAI . WASHINGTON, DC 9 THE TREASURES IN OUR SANCTUARY CONTINUED Candlelighting. The blessings welcoming Shabbat (the Sabbath) are traditionally said in the home at sundown on Friday. They have been included in the Reform Shabbat synagogue services as well. Menorah. The temple menorah at the front of the sanctuary (see photos on pages 5 and 16–17) reminds us of the seven-branch candelabrum of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. It symbolizes the seven days of the Creation. Standing eight feet tall, our menorah, as are all of the other cast bronze ceremonial objects, is by sculptor Harvey Moore (z”l). The spiraling shapes of the seven candles recall the braided challah, the bread we eat on Friday evening after lighting the Shabbat candles. The menorah in the rear of the sanctuary is a chanukiyah (pictured above), lit during the festival of Chanukah. It has eight branches—one for each night of the holiday— as well as an additional holder at the base for the candle called the shamash (servant), used to light the other candles. This chanukiyah was originally designed to burn oil, which is the tradition of the festival. TEMPLE SINAI . WASHINGTON, DC 11 THE SHABBAT SERVICE During the two millenia in which the Jews have been dispersed among the peoples of the world, two traditions, the Sabbath day of rest and Torah study, have enabled the passing-on of Jewish traditions and the survival of our people. Shabbat services are held on Friday evening and on Saturday morning.

I describe the distinct aesthetics of this art and explain its role in the Zionist nation-building project. Although Jerusalem’s art scene participated significantly in creating a Jewish–Israeli national identity, it has been accorded little or no place in the canon of national art. Adopting a historiographic approach, I focus on the artist Mordecai Ardon and the activities of the New Bezalel School and the Jerusalem Artists Society. Examining texts and artworks associated with these institutions through the prism of migratory aesthetics, I claim that the art made by Jerusalem’s artists was rooted in their diasporic identities as East or Central European Jews, some German-born, others having settled in Germany as children or young adults. These diasporic identities were formed through their everyday lives as members of a Jewish diaspora in a host country—whether that be the Russian Empire, Poland, or Germany. Under their arrival in Palestine, however, the diasporic Jewish identities of these immigrants (many of whom were not initially Zionists) clashed with the Zionist–Jewish identity that was hegemonic in the nascent field of Israeli art.

This cemetery contains very detailed, specific gravestone images that are unusual for Jewish cemeteries, including depictions of people, angels, and death scenes. Because gravestones act as a visual reference of the values, beliefs, and cultural environment of the people who used them, this paper explores traditional Jewish gravestone symbols and the prohibition of graven images in Judaism, and the importance of interpretation of this prohibition in Jewish symbols, other Jewish cemeteries around the world including the Ouderkerk cemetery in the Netherlands, and cultural and historical context of the time in which the gravestones were used in Curaçao. Specific symbols analyzed in this paper include traditional Jewish symbols such as the hands of blessing and tree of life, and also representations of professions, especially ships, and also depictions of people and angels. The combination of traditional Jewish symbolism for gravestones and also uncommon gravestone symbols in the cemetery in Curaçao suggests that the gravestones communicate cross-culturally and express cultural and historical context of the Jews of Curaçao who used them. Other cemeteries considered in a comparative context to the Beth Haim Curaçao gravestone symbolism include the Ouderkerk cemetery in the Netherlands, the Suriname Jewish cemeteries, and the Jewish cemetery in Rhode Island. The paper’s central focus is on gravestone symbolism as communicative tools that express cultural and historic experiences through universal visual elements.

    83 The Shofar and its Symbolism Malcolm Miller Part I: The shofar's symbolism in biblical and historical sources There is a sense of expectation in the silence before the shofar sound, followed by unease evoked by the various blasts. Part of its mystery lies in the interplay of the silence, the piercing sound, and the hum of the people praying. On its most basic level, the shofar can be seen to express what we cannot find the right words to say. The blasts are the wordless cries of the People of Israel. The shofar is the instrument that sends those cries of pain and sorrow and longing hurtling across the vast distance towards the Other. (Michael Strassfeld)1 This very poetic description of the shofar in its ritual performance highlights both the particularly Jewish and the universal elements of the instrument. The emotional associations and the use of the instrument as a symbol of memory and identity may find resonances with many religious faiths. Its specifically Jewish connotations are especially poignant at the start of the twenty-first century, yet the symbolism of the shofar extends far beyond the "cries of pain and sorrow," reaching across history to its biblical origins, to evoke a plethora of associations. As I hope to illustrate in the present article, the shofar has generated a rich nexus of metaphorical tropes, those of supernatural power, joy, freedom, victory, deliverance, national identity, moral virtue, repentance, social justice, and many other topics, some of which have remained constant while others have changed. At the heart of the matter is the appreciation of the shofar as not merely a functional instrument, as often believed, but a "musical" one, whose propensity to evoke a profound aesthetic response has led to multiple interpretations of its symbolism.

This essay will explore how such rereading is a political activity, one that challenges prevailing models of community, political status, and public religion. To gain admittance into European culture, education, and society, many nineteenth-century German-jews adopted a religious rather than national inheritance. They recognized themselves within a narra- tive of religious history divorced from national ties. But the stark contrast between religion and nationality should not obscure the political nature of jewish religious identity.

After the sermon in chapters 15 and 16, what else was there left for the king to do? The contrast between what I am doing and what I could be doing is simply intolerable—I can’t face it. I must get rid of the one, or get rid of the other. You can’t share them. As Brigham Young said, nothing is harder than trying to carry the load on both shoulders. It will just tear you apart. You’ve got to decide one way or the other. He [King Noah] heard the story, and he knew it was true, but it was intolerable. He couldn’t face it. The only thing to do was get the man out of sight and out of mind. So take him away and put him to death. “But there was one among them whose name was Alma,” and there’s a very important thing about Alma. You’ll notice his situation and what kind of fellow he was. What was Alma’s situation? It goes out of the way to tell us why he was in this situation. He was a direct descendant of Nephi.

I do not intend to present a systematic and comprehensive description of the dialogue and conflicts between Jews and Christians, with their various historical metamorphoses. My sole purpose is to reveal fragmented images of repressed and internalized ideas that lie beneath the surface of the o‹cial, overt religious ideology, which are not always explicitly expressed. My ob- jective is to engage in a rational and open discussion of the roles played by irrationality, disinformation, and misinformation in shaping both the self- definition and the definition of the “other” among Jews and Christians in the Middle Ages. The book revolves around three pairs: Jacob and Esau, Passover and Easter, Jewish martyrdom and blood libel. The first pair is typological, that is, it uses an existing narrative system based on the Scriptures and charges it with the later conflict between Israel and Edom, Judaea and Rome, Judaism and Christianity, a conflict between chosen and rejected, persecuted and perse- cutor. This involvement with the question of who is chosen and who is re- jected, who is “Jacob” and who is “Esau,” reflects a process of self-definition as well as, ipso facto, a definition of the other, the persecutor and rival.     JOHN AND THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD'S SUPPER DANIEL AUGSBURGER Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan John's silence on the baptism of Christ and the institution of the Lord's Supper contrasted with his obvious elaborations upon the themes of bread, water, and blood have puzzled many commentators. Why does John omit these vital inci- dents and then stress the symbols that give them all their meaning ? Is this a hint of historical or doctrinal disagreement between him and the Synoptists? Shall we seek here a clue to the attitude of the author of the Fourth Gospel toward the sacraments? A brief survey of the explanations which have been suggested will reveal how broad,the spectrum of opinions has bec0me.l I. Accident: F. Spitta thought that because of an accident, a page of the manuscript was lost.2 However, at no point can we sense a break of meaning in our text and this makes his solution untenable. 2. Old Age or Ignorance : Some nineteenth-century critics explained the silence of the evangelist by the fact that John was so old at the time he wrote his gospel that he had forgotten some of the important incidents. Others thought the author did not know these facts at all.3 But nowhere in this work can we find evidence of senility, and critics recognize more and more his remarkable knowledge of Jewish life and society. 3.
