The Montgomery File Quoting Shane Montgomery Born ...... March 14, 1967 (About the Cincinnati Game): We were really disappointed about the outcome of the game. We felt like we were prepared going into it. We knew it would be a challenge because they are Age ...... 40 a very good football team coming off a huge win against Oregon State. Even though we lost Hometown ...... Newark, Ohio the Minnesota game, we felt like we had a lot of momentum at the end of that game and could build on that. We had a big stop early, turned it over on our fi rst play and enabled them to go Alma Mater ...... North Carolina State ‘90 down and take a 7-0 lead. We struggled offensively in the fi rst couple of series and then had a punt blocked to give them a 9-0 lead really early. Then, they were able to score on their next COACHING EXPERIENCE possession and go up 16-0. Miami University Obviously, we dug ourselves into a big hole that we could never recover from. We tried right at the end of half to get back in the ball game. We put Daniel Raudabaugh into the game, and March 2001-Present we had our fi rst real drive on offense. I think a big series was right after we made the fi eld goal • Head Coach (December 2004-present) they went the length of the fi eld and got a fi eld goal to go up 26-3 at half time. We came out and had a great scoring drive to open the second half, 26-10. We got a stop defensively, and • Offensive Coordinator and Coach after they pinned us on the one-yard line, we got it out and had a chance. But they were able to (2001-04) score and make it 33-10, and they pulled away from there. I think we self-destructed on both sides of the ball in the fi rst half. Offensively, we had Tennessee-Chattanooga two big turnovers, four penalties and gave up three sacks early in the ball game which really disrupted what we were trying to do offensively. Defensively, we played well at times, consider- February 1993-March 2001 ing we allowed them to get some good fi eld position on special teams. We just self-destructed. • Wide Receivers Coach (1997-2000), That’s a good football team, and when you play a team like that, you just can’t put yourself in a hole that bad that early. We were just trying to fi ght an up-hill battle the rest of the game. Quarterbacks Coach (1993-1996), Recruiting (About Miami’s Running Backs): The running back situation took a big turn for the worse Coordinator (1995-2000), Co-Offensive when Andre Bratton went down on the third play of the game. After losing Brandon Murphy Coordinator (1995-96). last week, we lost our two home run threats on offense. I thought Austin Sykes came in and did a great job, rushing for over 70 yards. He did what he is capable of doing. He doesn’t have a lot North Carolina State of breakaway threat, but he is a good runner inside the tackles, and he always gets that extra yardage and does a good job of taking care of the football. Obviously, we’ve got to fi nd out who August 1991-February 1992 our next guys are. Cory Jones went in and got some plays. That’s the fi rst time he’s gotten into • Graduate Assistant Coach a ball game as a fi fth-year senior as he too has had a lot of injuries throughout his career. Jamel Miller played in his fi rst game ever and touched the ball a couple times. With Andre Bratton out PLAYING EXPERIENCE right now and not knowing what his status is, we’re probably going to have to get true fresh- man Thomas Merriweather ready. Raleigh Durham Skyhawks ...... 1990 (About Miami’s Quarterbacks): Going into the game, I felt good with Mike (Kokal). I felt like • Quarterback during inaugural season of World he was the guy to start that game. I knew Daniel (Raudabaugh) would come off the bench if League of American Football we needed him to. We took Mike out early. He struggled. He ended up hurting his thumb on one of his last plays, which we were unaware of until later in the ball game. Daniel came in and I North Carolina State ...... 1985-1989 thought he did some really good things. In his fi rst three series, which was the last series of the fi rst half and the fi rst two series of the second half, I thought he looked tremendous. He really • Three-year letterwinner at QB got us into a groove offensively. He tried to force some things later in the second half, but the • Second-team all-ACC in 1989 game was pretty much out of reach. We asked him to just drop back and throw every down and take some chances. He probably forced a couple balls, but overall I thought he played • Offensive MVP of the ‘88 Peach Bowl and ‘89 pretty well. As we go into this game (at Colorado), our plan right now is to probably start Daniel Copper Bowl Raudabaugh and give him a chance to start and see what he can do. We’ll take it day to day with Mike and see how is thumb is progressing as we go through this week. We’ll also give Clay Belton some reps to keep him ready in case we need him. (About Joey Hudson): Joe Hudson is a tremendous story. One week ago on Sunday, we felt like there was a chance he could be out for the year. We got some good news after the MRI, and we expected him to probably be out for a couple weeks. He started feeling better on Wednes- day, practiced some on Thursday, went out and ran around on Friday and really begged us to put him in the game. The doctors cleared him because they felt like he was as good as he was going to be. Tremendous kudos to Joe for being in tremendous shape, which allowed him to come back from an injury like that. I know when he went into the ball game after being on the sidelines for a while, he gave us a lift. You could see him fl ying around out there. Even though he was hurt with a knee injury, he probably played the best game of the three games he’s played this year. I’m really proud of him and what he brought to the table on Saturday. (About Colorado): I watched some of their game against Florida State. They played pretty well and it was a close game throughout. They were really good on defense last year and struggled on offense. Early this year, they had a big win over Colorado State, outscoring them in overtime. They got off to a 14-0 lead on Arizona State two weeks ago and got beat 33-14, so they have given up some points this year. They had struggled on offense the last two games and were getting ready to be shut out on Saturday for the fi rst time in 224 games, but they scored late and were actually still in the ball game. They tried to go for two with about four minutes left and ended up losing 16-6. Obvi- ously, they were very competitive against a very good Florida State team. We are going into a hostile environment, and it will be a tough road game for us especially with some injuries that we have. They are a much improved football team from a year ago, and they have played a very tough schedule so far and have some tough games ahead of them with their league schedule coming up behind us. It will be a challenging road game for us, and we are going to have to get better and more consistent on both sides of the ball. They use a lot of formations offensively, which will challenge us. We’re going to have to have a great week of practice because they do a lot of things out of a lot of different personnels that will challenge us defensively. Offensively, they use some schemes that we haven’t seen a lot of this year. They do man-to-man coverage, so we’ve got to be ready for that. We’ll see a physical front line on both sides of the ball, so that will challenge us up front on both sides. 2007 Football 7 miami university media services Whom To Contact ...
