C. O’HAIR, CORNELIUS STAM, AND CHARLES BAKER CONCERNING THE ORIGIN OF THE CHURCH, WATER BAPTISM, AND THE COMMISSION OF THE CHURCH Adam O. Christmas Moderate ultradispensationalism found its historic inauguration within the teachings of three men: J. C. O’Hair, Cornelius Stam, and Charles Baker. These individuals purported that the doctrine they instructed was a true resemblance of biblical “dispensationalism.” This research aims to determine if this assertion is correct on the basis of the accepted hermeneutic of dispensationalism: the grammatical-historical method. The question that this research seeks to answer is, “Did the historic proponents of moderate ultradispensationalism, Stam, O’Hair, and Baker, arrive at their ecclesiology concerning the origin of the Church, water baptism, and the commission of the Church by interpreting ecclesiological passages in harmony with the grammatical-historical method, the hermeneutic which leads to a truly dispensational theology?” From this question, the purpose of this research is to analyze and evaluate the interpretations of O’Hair, Stam, and Baker concerning iv v the origin of the Church, water baptism, and the commission of the Church in order to determine their adherence to the grammatical-historical method of interpretation. This research utilizes the principles of the grammatical-historical method of hermeneutics and the “Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics” as the criteria for analyzing and evaluating the interpretations of O’Hair, Stam, and Baker. These principles are as follows: 1) context, 2) other Scripture, 3) grammatical considerations, 4) historical background, and 5) genre. They are utilized by forming them into a series of questions in order to determine an overall evaluation (i.e. “Is this interpretation in harmony with the context of the text?”). The results of the evaluation is that the interpretations of O’Hair, Stam, and Baker, concerning the origin of the Church, water baptism, and the commission of the Church, are not in harmony with the principles of the grammatical-historical method of hermeneutics and the “Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics.” Therefore, the conclusion is that they employed a different hermeneutic; and further research necessitates investigation in order to ascertain that exact hermeneutic they applied. THE WALVOORD LEGACY by Thomas Ice The comprehensive sweep of the Bible, as it looks at history from God’s point of view and then presents the glorious future that is awaiting the child of God, gives the Christian a life of meaningful activity, a system of values that transcends the materialism of our day, and a glorious hope in a world where there is much happiness.1 —John F. Walvoord On December 20, 2002 one of the giants of the church went home to be with the Lord. John F. Walvoord, theologian, writer, and teacher, seminary president, and defender of dispensational pretribulational premillennialism passed from our midst. He was 92 years old. It would not be an overstatement to say that Dr. Walvoord was the foremost proponent of pretribulationism and one of the world’s leading interpreters of Bible prophecy. We will miss him! However, as giants are prone to do, he has left behind a great legacy. Dr. Walvoord came to Dallas Seminary in 1931 as a student and remained there until his death in 2002.

    The Journal of Ministry & Theology 26 The Glory of God and Dispensationalism: Revisiting the Sine Qua Non of Dispensationalism Douglas Brown n 1965 Charles Ryrie published Dispensationalism Today. In this influential volume, Ryrie attempted to explain, I systematize, and defend the dispensational approach to the Scriptures. His most notable contribution was arguably the three sine qua non of dispensationalism. First, a dispensationalist consistently keeps Israel and the church distinct. Second, a dispensationalist consistently employs a literal system of hermeneutics (i.e., what Ryrie calls “normal” or “plain” interpretation). Third, a dispensationalist believes that the underlying purpose of the world is the glory of God.2 The acceptance of Ryrie’s sine qua non of dispensationalism has varied within dispensational circles. In general, traditional dispensationalists have accepted the sine qua non and used them as a starting point to explain the essence of dispensationalism.3 In contrast, progressive dispensationalists have largely rejected Ryrie’s proposal and have explored new ways to explain the essential tenants of Douglas Brown, Ph.D., is Academic Dean and Senior Professor of New Testament at Faith Baptist Theological Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa.     CROYDON PHILATELIC SOCIETY NOTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 24TH APRIL 2018 President Richard West opened the meeting at 19.45 hours and welcomed the 14 members present. He welcomed Brian Asquith and asked him to give his presentation on Triest/Trieste. Trieste is situated at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea and has a Venetian name meaning “trade”, “market”. It was the main commercial Mediterranean port for the Austro-Hungarian Empire and “Triest” is the Austrian/German spelling. At the end of World War 1 it became a Mediterranean port for Italy and “Trieste” is the Italian spelling. The first entire shown was from Trieste to Venice in 1505. Manuscript markings were used until 1782 when the first postmark, a Gothic “Von Triest” hand-stamp came into use and was used until 1786. During the Napoleonic Wars Triest was occupied by the French briefly in1797, then again in 1805 – 1806 and a 1805 letter was shown from a soldier in Napoleon's army writing to his mother asking for money to buy shoes and shirts. Finally the French were there for a longer period from 1809 – 1814 when the coastal region of Istria and Dalmatia, including Trieste (the French spelling) was incorporated into Napoleon's Empire as “Illyrie”. Three different “Trieste/ Illyrie” postmarks were in use at this time and this entire from Spalato to Capodystria via Trieste is the scarcest of the three. 1 DEB./TRIESTE/ILLYRIE “DEB” = Déboursé This scarce mark was to warn that postage was accounted for to Trieste and that postage for forwarding from there to the destination was due.

    The Origins of Dispensationalism Most people assume that Dispensationalism started with J N Darby, one of the originators of the Brethren movement. Certainly Darby popularised this doctrine and, with the spread of Scofield’s reference Bible, the teaching went world wide. However, Darby was not the first to develop these ideas. In fact, there is now conclusive evidence that there was a plan by William Kelly (another key Brethren leader, and follower of Darby) to discredit the real origins, because of their dubious pedigree, and inflate the place of Darby. 1 We should be very clear that Dispensationalism finds no place in the entire history of the church before 1830. No one has yet found any credible evidence that anybody believed or taught such a thing. This alone should cause alarm bells to ring in our spiritual ears. When we learn the true origin of the error, we can see even more reason to steer clear. Key Distinctives of Dispensationalism Before we proceed, we need to clarify exactly what this teaching is in connection with other eschatological theories. Dispensationalism is a variant of Historic Premillennialism, that is the teaching that Christ will return after the Great Tribulation and establish a 1000 year reign on the earth (millennium) before the final battle with Satan (Armageddon), which issues in final judgment and a new earth. Postmillennialism teaches that Christ returns after a golden age of 1000 years where the church rules the earth in righteousness; Amillennialism believes that there is no Biblical teaching about a literal millennium and that the only passage which mentions is (Rev 20) is symbolically speaking of the age of grace in which we now live.

Adams Horatio Lord Nelson, Britain’s most famous naval figure, revolutionized what victory meant to the British Royal Navy and the British populace at the turn of the nineteenth century. But his legacy continued after his death in 1805, and a century after his untimely passing Nelson meant as much or more to Britain than he did during his lifetime. This thesis utilizes primary sources from the British Royal Navy and the general British public to explore what the cultural memory of Horatio Nelson’s life and achievements meant to Britain throughout the Edwardian era and to the dawn of the First World War.
