A Prayer for Veterans Heavenly Father, King and Lord, You Instill in All of Your Creation an Order and Value November 17, 2019 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time A Prayer for Veterans Heavenly Father, King and Lord, You instill in all of Your creation an order and value. You call Your children "very good." We surrender to You the conflicts that tear your family apart. We pray for an end to blindness that places pride, greed, power, and selfishness above human dignity and brotherly love. We pray in gratitude for all of those who have defended peace, virtue, and justice with honor. We pray especially for those who have suffered in mind and body from the ravages of war. Let Your Kingdom come! May Your peace that surpasses all understanding reign in our hearts and in our world. Amen. If you would like the Eucharist brought to you or a loved one, contact the parish office at (303) 799-1036. Do YOU yearn for greater intimacy with Jesus? Secular Order Discalced Carmelites are men and women, married or single, from all walks of life. Under the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and inspired by the Carmelite Saints, we commit to seek God through prayer and to share Him with others. The Denver Community of the Holy Spirit meets monthly at St. Thomas More Parish in St. Francis Hall. These meetings consist of formation in Carmelite Spirituality, contemplative prayer and mutual support. We cordially invite you to join the first session of our annual Aspirant Study Group on December 14, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Ida Rubin, O.C.D.S., 303-805-4853 or [email protected]. Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time -2- November 17, 2019 UNDERSTANDING THE LITURGY... so we can fully participate in our liturgical celebration After Communion, it is convenient to leave a time of silence so that both the priest and the faithful can take advantage of those moments of intimacy with the Lord. The Holy Father, in his apostolic exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis speaks about this: "Furthermore, the precious time of thanksgiving after Communion should not be neglected: besides the singing of an appropriate hymn, it can also be most helpful to remain recollected in silence." (SC, 50) To complete the prayer of the people of God and to conclude the whole Communion Rite, the priest says the post- Communion prayer, in which we ask that the Mystery we have celebrated produce abundant fruit in the faithful and in the Church. (Cf. GIRM, 72) After the post-Communion prayer, the priest greets the faithful and blesses them, tracing the sign of the Cross and invoking the Trinity: "May almighty God bless you. The Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit." It is necessary to point out that the priest here does not ask for the blessing of God to descend upon us. He - if he celebrates the Catholic liturgy - transmits, effectively and with the certainty of the liturgy, the blessing that Christ grants to His people. He does so as Our Lord who, speaking to His disciples in the moment of His ascension, "raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them, he parted from them and was taken up to heaven." (Lk 24:50-51) So now, through the priest who represents Him, the Lord blesses the Christian people, who have come together in the Eucharist to celebrate people, who have come together in the Eucharist to celebrate the memorial of "the death your Son endured for our salvation, his glorious resurrection and ascension into heaven, and ready to greet him when he comes again." (EP III). • Faith Voices Letter
In Support Of Keeping Houses Of Worship Nonpartisan August 16, 2017 Dear Senator: As a leader in my religious community, I am strongly opposed to any effort to repeal or weaken current law that protects houses of worship from becoming centers of partisan politics. Changing the law would threaten the integrity and independence of houses of worship. We must not allow our sacred spaces to be transformed into spaces used to endorse or oppose political candidates. Faith leaders are called to speak truth to power, and we cannot do so if we are merely cogs in partisan political machines. The prophetic role of faith communities necessitates that we retain our independent voice. Current law respects this independence and strikes the right balance: houses of worship that enjoy favored tax-exempt status may engage in advocacy to address moral and political issues, but they cannot tell people who to vote for or against. Nothing in current law, however, prohibits me from endorsing or opposing political candidates in my own personal capacity. Changing the law to repeal or weaken the “Johnson Amendment” – the section of the tax code that prevents tax-exempt nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates – would harm houses of worship, which are not identified or divided by partisan lines. Particularly in today’s political climate, engaging in partisan politics and issuing endorsements would be highly divisive and have a detrimental impact on congregational unity and civil discourse. I therefore urge you to oppose any repeal or weakening of the Johnson Amendment, thereby protecting the independence and integrity of houses of worship and other religious organizations in the charitable sector.

Address on Conscience and the Catholic Layman Boston Catholic Men’s Conference Boston, MA March 17, 2007 Carl A. Anderson Gentlemen, it is an honor for me to join you this afternoon, as you ponder the question of how we, as Catholic men, are called to live our lives as “Workers in Christ’s Vineyard.” Inasmuch as I have the privilege of serving as head of the world’s largest organization of Catholic laymen, I’ve had occasion to think about this subject quite a lot. Some of you are undoubtedly brother Knights, and so you know that we’re celebrating our 125th anniversary this year. Since our founding down in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882, we’ve provided an opportunity for millions of Catholic men to live out their faith together, bound by devotion to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. We’ve faced many difficult challenges over the years, and have met them together, as Catholic gentlemen who strive to be loving husbands and fathers, and as men whose Catholic faith is much more than a perfunctory visit at Mass on Sunday. It has never been an easy thing to live one’s life as a faithful Catholic. We all know that in the earliest days of the Church, Christians frequently paid with their lives for simply worshiping the one true God. Martyrdom was the price of faith, and many willingly paid the price. We tend not to think too much these days about martyrdom. The days of Nero and spectacles in the Roman Coliseum are long gone, but martyrdom is not.

This is my gift to you. ~ John 14:27 It is this peace of Christ, a divine gift, that motivates the Catholic peace movement. The movement takes its name, Pax Christi, Peace of Christ, from this faith basis. But this peace is understood as a gift that must be shared, a blessing that requires not only a struggle against war and violence, but also the building of just structures. In pursuing this agenda Pax Christi members are encouraged by the words: “Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

2007-02-22,_SS_Benedictus_XVI,_Adhortatio_'Sacramentum_Caritatis' POST-SYNODAL APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION SACRAMENTUM CARITATIS OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI TO THE BISHOPS, CLERGY, CONSECRATED PERSONS AND THE LAY FAITHFUL ON THE EUCHARIST AS THE SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF THE CHURCH'S LIFE AND MISSION INTRODUCTION 1. The sacrament of charity (1), the Holy Eucharist is the gift that Jesus Christ makes of himself, thus revealing to us God's infinite love for every man and woman. This wondrous sacrament makes manifest that "greater" love which led him to "lay down his life for his friends" (Jn 15:13). Jesus did indeed love them "to the end" (Jn 13:1). In those words the Evangelist introduces Christ's act of immense humility: before dying for us on the Cross, he tied a towel around himself and washed the feet of his disciples. In the same way, Jesus continues, in the sacrament of the Eucharist, to love us "to the end," even to offering us his body and his blood. What amazement must the Apostles have felt in witnessing what the Lord did and said during that Supper! What wonder must the eucharistic mystery also awaken in our own hearts! The food of truth 2. In the sacrament of the altar, the Lord meets us, men and women created in God's image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:27), and becomes our companion along the way. In this sacrament, the Lord truly becomes food for us, to satisfy our hunger for truth and freedom. Since only the truth can make us free (cf.

From that he expounded on the nature of reverence, both as a matter of interior activity and exterior stillness.
