What Time Is It? Welcome Two New Staff Members
May/June 2018 What time is it? Vol. XLVI No.3 Time to tutor! Terri Fedak, an AARP Foundation Experience Corps literacy tutor was the inaugural recipient of the Frances White Gale Award for Educational Excellence due to her volunteering efforts day-to-day and year-to-year – 17 of them! Terri came to volunteering after accepting a company “buy-out”. She had the same questions most people have when they experience a life-style change; what do I do now? She reflected on wanting to work with children. She wasn’t sure how to go about doing this and let it simmer in her life for a while. An ad in her church bulletin brought that thought forward again. She reached out to Greater Cleveland Volunteers for more information. Terri has embraced the literacy program because of the guidance and support she, and all tutors, receive. She serves as a mentor to new tutors and many of them enjoy shadowing her for a better understanding of the position. Her greatest motivation is what she has witnessed over the years. “It’s the other tutors! They show their love for children and this inspires me.” She keeps coming back year after year because she knows how important literacy skills are and the earlier they are developed the more confident the student is. Welcome two new staff members: Melissa Elick: Joining our agency as the Special Projects Coordinator, Melissa was the Community Event Specialist for the City of Akron coordinating festivals and other events for the community. She is a Kent State University graduate with her B.A in Communications.

2015 Report to City of Cleveland Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Introduction The mission of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is to measurably enhance the economy, image and quality of life in the Greater Cleveland community by attracting and creating significant sporting events and activities. The philosophy of the Sports Commission sets it apart from others by operating as an economic and community development organization utilizing sports as a vehicle to forward other community agendas. The organization takes the unique approach of becoming a management and financial partner in each event with the goal of producing events that are more successful in Cleveland than other locations in which they have been held. Since 2000, the Sports Commission has been responsible for attracting, creating and/or managing over 160 sporting events resulting in estimated economic activity of more than $460 million to the region. The Sports Commission has an operating budget of nearly $1,000,000. 2015 was another extremely impactful year for the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. The organization hosted a total of nine events that produced over $16 million of economic activity. The Sports Commission also secured six events for future years. These six major events are expected to bring an additional $18 million of economic activity in upcoming years. The Sports Commission also launched bids for several events that will bring an international spotlight and an immense economic impact to Cleveland. The MLB and NBA All-Star Games highlight this list of exciting bids. The Sports Commission’s work in 2015 improved Cleveland’s image by placing the city in the regional, national and international spotlight.

Impact Report Forward
2019 IMPACT REPORT FORWARD Greater Cleveland Sports Commission experienced its most impactful year as an organization by hosting 13 major sporting events in 2019 ranging from collegiate to professional sports. Due to the scale of these awarded events, Northeast Ohio saw an influx of an estimated $87,837,956 in economic impact. Cleveland started 2019 with welcoming 352 girls’ volleyball teams from across the nation during Junior Volleyball Association Rock ‘N Rumble. Additionally, 12 other major sporting events were held in Northeast Ohio between January and August including four NCAA Championships, Concacaf Gold Cup featuring U.S. Men’s National Team and 2019 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. This year, approximately 12,275 competitors visited the North Coast for GCSC-hosted events and 219 Northeast Ohio youth participated in our Youth Education through Sports programs that provided them unique opportunities to experience various sports and events. A major highlight of 2019 was MLB All-Star Week on July 5-9, which brought the top baseball athletes and their fans to Cleveland for events such as MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet, T-Mobile Home Run Derby and the 90th MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. The footprint of America’s favorite pastime extended beyond the ballpark including MLB PLAY BALL PARK at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and countless community festivities. This event provided an estimated $65 million in economic impact to Northeast Ohio. “This was by far the largest year of economic impact that we’ve experienced at the Sports Commission,” said David Gilbert, president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
