2019 IMPACT REPORT FORWARD Greater Cleveland Sports Commission experienced its most impactful year as an organization by hosting 13 major sporting events in 2019 ranging from collegiate to professional sports. Due to the scale of these awarded events, Northeast Ohio saw an influx of an estimated $87,837,956 in economic impact. Cleveland started 2019 with welcoming 352 girls’ volleyball teams from across the nation during Junior Volleyball Association Rock ‘N Rumble. Additionally, 12 other major sporting events were held in Northeast Ohio between January and August including four NCAA Championships, Concacaf Gold Cup featuring U.S. Men’s National Team and 2019 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships. This year, approximately 12,275 competitors visited the North Coast for GCSC-hosted events and 219 Northeast Ohio youth participated in our Youth Education through Sports programs that provided them unique opportunities to experience various sports and events. A major highlight of 2019 was MLB All-Star Week on July 5-9, which brought the top baseball athletes and their fans to Cleveland for events such as MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet, T-Mobile Home Run Derby and the 90th MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. The footprint of America’s favorite pastime extended beyond the ballpark including MLB PLAY BALL PARK at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland and countless community festivities. This event provided an estimated $65 million in economic impact to Northeast Ohio. “This was by far the largest year of economic impact that we’ve experienced at the Sports Commission,” said David Gilbert, president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. “Having the opportunity to reach nearly $88 million in one year is a big achievement for our small non-profit. Our team is extremely thankful to the Northeast Ohio community and our partners, such as the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Mid-American Conference, as well as the City of Cleveland and State of Ohio for helping us make Cleveland the destination for large-scale sporting events.” In 2019, Greater Cleveland Sports Commission was also responsible for increasing its event portfolio through new and returning events that will create success within the organization and in the community for many years to come. (BESCO) to get the job done. The project required over 650 new and replacement signs as well as large format graphics that demanded a company with experience working on ballparks, stadiums and arenas. A perfect fit for BESCO with decades of demonstrated experience working with professional sports venues including Progressive Field (formerly Jacobs Field), Browns Stadium and Quicken Loans Arena.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 24, No. 3 (2002) Tony Adamle: Doctor of Defense By Bob Carroll Paul Brown “always wanted his players to better themselves, and he wanted us known for being more than just football players,” Tony Adamle told an Akron Beacon Journal reporter in 1999. In the case of Adamle, the former Cleveland Browns linebacker who passed away on October 8, 2000, at age 76, his post-football career brought him even more honor than captaining a world championship team. Tony was born May 15, 1924, in Fairmont, West Virginia, to parents who had immigrated from Slovenia. By the time he reached high school, his family had moved to Cleveland where he attended Collinwood High. From there, he moved on to Ohio State University where he first played under Brown who became the OSU coach in 1941. World War II interrupted Adamle’s college days along with those of so many others. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Middle East theatre. By the time he returned, Paul Bixler had succeeded Paul Brown, who had moved on to create Cleveland’s team in the new All-America Football Conference. Adamle lettered for the Buckeyes in 1946 and played well enough that he was selected to the 1947 College All-Star Game. He started at fullback on a team that pulled off a rare 16-0 victory over the NFL’s 1946 champions, the Chicago Bears. Six other members of the starting lineup were destined to make a mark in the AAFC, including the game’s stars, quarterback George Ratterman and running back Buddy Young.

My research uses an ethnographic approach to investigate social life in one racially diverse suburb of Cleveland, OH: Shaker Heights. Specifically, I investigate how African Americans who occupy this space—as residents, employees, and visitors—think about, describe, and participate in social life in a diverse suburb. After two years of ethnographic fieldwork, I conclude that, although Shaker Heights is statistically integrated, the residential spaces and social lives of black adults do not reflect this demographic reality. Moreover, black adults interpret the rare, discrete instances where racial diversity is promoted as inauthentic. Finally, my research explores connections and commonalities among the black adults living in the segregated sections of Shaker Heights. This information will help scholars better understand dynamics of race relations in a neighborhood context that is both seldom explored and growing in demographic importance. ii Copyright 2018, by Alan V.
