The modern nation-state is reaching out beyond its territorial boundaries, bringing in migrants in the diaspora and reorienting their gaze back towards India. It is part of a larger strategy built around dominating cyberspace and exercising power over minds instead of bodies. A critical discourse analysis of OFBJP.org shows the priorities of the organization. It is built around recreating the hierarchy of the BJP and playing on migrants’ emotional attachment to India to compel them to donate money and invest in the country in exchange for cultural capital. In doing so, it helps (re)produce a particular vision of India.

CALTECH/MIT VOTING TECHNOLOGY PROJECT A multi-disciplinary, collaborative project of the California Institute of Technology – Pasadena, California 91125 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 MILITARY VOTING AND THE LAW: PROCEDURAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS TO THE BALLOT TRANSIT PROBLEM R. Michael Alvarez Caltech Thad E. Hall, Brian F. Roberts University of Utah Key words: overseas voting, military voting, military voter participation, ballot transit VTP WORKING PAPER #53 March 2007 During the 2000 presidential election controversy in Florida, the ballots submitted by individuals living overseas—especially military voters—were seen as crucial to the election outcome as the margin of potential victory was so small that these ballots could turn the election from one candidate to the other. Headlines at the time noted that “Odds Against Gore Absentee Gains: Republican-Leaning Counties Appear to Have More Uncounted Overseas Ballots,”1 “Bush Lead Swells with Overseas Votes,”2 “Military Ballot Review is Urged,”3 And “How Bush Took Florida: Mining the Overseas Absentee Vote.”4 For many Americans, however, the controversy surrounding the votes of military personnel and overseas voters, despite its importance, may have seemed both bewildering and esoteric. The debate centered on minute details; whether or not certain overseas absentee ballots were valid and could therefore be counted if they lacked postmarks, were received within given time periods, had missing signature or were deficient in other statutorily required characteristics, that are beyond the interest of the typical individual. However, several key legal skirmishes were fought within the broader context of the recount battle concerning whether certain absentee ballots could be counted, the resolution of which could have swayed the outcome of the 2000 presidential election.5 Issues of equal protection, 1 Keating, Dan and John Mintz.

  • Each New Day a Miracle
Each New Day a Miracle © 2021 Peter Rhebergen Last modified on September 29, 2021 EACH NEW DAY A MIRACLE Poetry by Peter Rhebergen For most of my life I have written poetry. Some of my poems may be good (perhaps even very good), some are merely average and far too many are pleasing only to me. I do not pretend to be a great poet; I am just a man who has experienced both joy and grief and has reflected on these in words. I write because I know The God listens who reads my heart; who finds worship in every smile and tear; who receives each joy as praise and who will heal every wound. The words on these pages have sprung from the realization that I have no one on whom I can depend other than God. These poems are cries to Him for help; praise to Him for His wonder; and reflections of the universe He has made for us to enjoy. They are the marks of my passage through this wonderful life He has given me. I hope that in seeing my footsteps your own may be made more sure. These poems are my worship to God. It is my prayer that in reading them you will be encouraged to worship God and praise Him for the life He has given you, regardless of its pain or joy. • America's Overseas Voters: 2016'S Forgotten Constituency?
AMERICA’S OVERSEAS VOTERS: 2016’S FORGOTTEN CONSTITUENCY? Halbert Jones and Patrick Andelic Rothermere American Institute The 2016 U.S. presidential campaign has proven one of the most unpredictable in recent decades, largely due to the unpopularity of both major party candidates, historically high levels of undecided voters, and unusually high support for third party candidates. Though Democrat Hillary Clinton appears to have opened a clear lead over her Republican opponent Donald Trump since the first presidential debate in late September, analyst Nate Silver has noted that ‘the polls have been considerably more volatile this year than in 2012.’1 Indeed, while most observers now consider a Clinton victory to be highly probable, some polls indicate that the race remains tight, even after what have widely been seen as significant reverses for the Republican nominee’s campaign in the past few weeks.2 Moreover, recent unexpected outcomes in elections and referenda in different parts of the world have served as a reminder that the conventional wisdom about the likelihood of a particular result can be proven wrong when the votes are counted. In such a climate, neither party can take anything for granted. As the race enters its final weeks, and with control of not just the White House but also the Senate and the House of Representatives in contention, candidates and parties are scrambling to ensure that their supporters turn out to vote. At this critical juncture, one bloc that that may still be underestimated is also one of the largest: American voters living overseas. 1 Nate Silver, “Election Update: Where the Race Stands Heading Into the First Debate,” FiveThirtyEight, 25 September 2016, http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/election-update-where-the-race-stands-heading-into-the- first-debate/, accessed 4 October 2016.
