Joey Beauchamp – the Player of a Generation
Joey Beauchamp – the player of a generation My dad spoke about it evocatively, a moment of silence, a collective disbelief. In the split of a second your mind slows the world down to allow your brain to comprehend what you’ve seen, converting it into a physical reaction. It happened to him once, watching Wolves in the 1960s, a moment in a game where your perception of what’s possible and the reality of what you’ve seen leaves a silent, motionless gap. It lasts a nanosecond, but you can live in it for an eternity, even when it passes, fragments of your memory retain it. You can revisit it when you need a safe space. Physically, you move on, metaphysically, you can rest. I’ve been there twice; against Wrexham in 2009; we needed a goal deep into injury-time to sustain our unlikely promotion charge out of the Conference. The ball was worked out to Craig Nelthorpe. At the other end, Billy Turley theatrically threw himself to the turf, he couldn’t watch, but we didn’t need him anymore, it was now or it was never. Nelthorpe looped in a cross, James Constable leapt, straining every muscle. He connected, guiding the ball towards goal. It clipped the underside of the bar and dropped down behind the line. The forging of what you want and what you get. And there it was, that moment of disbelief, a glimpse of hyper-reality, that silence. And then, an eruption. But it was the first time that was most memorable and a moment that lives in the collective psyche of those who were there. -

Comments Received Australian Institute of Sport ‘Recently, scientists at the Australian Institute of Sport quantified the reliability of the StrikeMate for measuring maximal punching power in athletes. Their findings help coaches and athletes interpret the results of testing using the StrikeMate. Their assessments showed that if an athlete’s punching power improves by more than 1.8% over time, they can be confident that their training has lead to positive change in performance, not simply random variation’ Clare Humberstone PhD BSc (Hons) Senior Sport Physiologist Australian Sports Commission http://www.ausport.gov.au/ Richard Vince (richardvince.com) 8th Dan Black Belt. ‘We purchased a 'StrikeMate' to use to draw people to our stand when we attend Martial/fighting Arts shows, tournaments, conventions etc. Whenever we have set up the 'StrikeMate' and encouraged a few people to start the ball rolling, we have been inundated with individuals eager to test their power on the device. So far (after approximately 100 weeks of regular use) it has shown itself to be reliable, accurate and durable. As you would expect, the goal of some Martial Artists has been to endeavour to break the machine. The device has, so far, shown no sign of yielding to this onslaught. The readings are clear and simple and the results seem consistent. It is a great piece of equipment; we also use it with our students at our Academy as a retention tool. Each student may attempt to increase their power each month if they so choose’. With respect Richard Vince Master Vince started his career in Martial Arts in 1979 at Ipswich Martial Arts Centre. -

Wednesday, May 15th 2019- Borne the Battle brought to you by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. I am your host, Marine Corps Veteran Tanner Iskra. Hope everyone else had a good weekend outside of podcast land. I just got back from a trip out West to Humptulips, Washington. Unfortunately, uh, I had to go and attend a family funeral. Uh, seems like every time you’re in the military or if you work away from your hometown- the only time you’re able to visit your hometown and your family and friends are funerals and weddings, which sucks-sucks a lot. The last two have been funerals- the next one will be a wedding and I am gonna be excited for that. So, shout out to my family out there. A couple of reviews and comments since I’ve been gone. Uh, first one is from goodhumorfan- “Good stuff. A good podcast for up to date information. The guests are interesting and the host is relatable.” Well, thank you for the review goodhumorfan and I’m happy to be able to- I’m happy you’re able to relate to me- absolutely.
