  • The Kano Durbar: Political Aesthetics in the Bowel of the Elephant
Original Article The Kano Durbar: Political aesthetics in the bowel of the elephant Wendy Griswolda,* and Muhammed Bhadmusb aDepartment of Sociology, Northwestern University, 1810 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60208, USA. E-mail: [email protected] bDepartment of Theatre and Drama, Bayero University Kano, Kano, Nigeria. E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author. Abstract Political aesthetics deploy theatrical techniques to unite performers and audience into a cultural community, thereby distracting from conflicts. The Kano Durbar in northern Nigeria demonstrates how the aesthetics of power can promote a place-based political culture. Although power in Kano rests on a wobbly three-legged stool of traditional, constitutional and religious authority, the status quo celebrated by the Durbar holds back ideological challengers like Boko Haram even as it perpetuates distance from the unified nation-state. The Durbar works as a social drama that helps sustain a Kano-based collective solidarity against the threats of ethnic/religious tensions and Salafist extremism. A cultural-sociological and dramaturgical analysis of the Durbar demonstrates how weak sources of power can support one another when bound together in an aesthetically compelling ritual. American Journal of Cultural Sociology (2013) 1, 125–151. doi:10.1057/ajcs.2012.8 Keywords: political aesthetics; place; social drama; Kano; Nigeria; Durbar Introduction While political rituals are expressions of power, what is less often noticed is that they are expressions of place. Bringing this insight to bear on the analysis of these rituals can reveal how they work, what exactly they accomplish, thereby resolving some of the puzzles they present. This article examines the case of the Kano Durbar, a Nigerian ritual that presents a social drama of and for Kano residents, a drama that helps sustain a sense of r 2013 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

  • The British Monarchy on Screen
1 ‘A very wonderful process’: Queen Victoria, photography and fi lm at the fi n de siècle Ian Christie Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrated in 1897, is generally agreed to have been the ceremonial climax to her reign, marking an unexpected return to pub- lic appearance after decades of self-imposed seclusion following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Yet how much its impact owed to being the fi rst major state event to be comprehensively fi lmed, with records of the procession being shown throughout Britain and the British Empire, as well as elsewhere, has hardly been assessed. Nor has the relationship between Victoria’s long-standing interest in pho- tography, still very much in evidence at the time of the Jubilee, and her response to ‘animated photography’. While John Plunkett has argued convincingly for see- ing Victoria as ‘media made’, his focus is primarily on ‘the tremendous expansion of the market for newspapers, books, periodicals and engravings’ that her reign witnessed. 1 And despite agreeing with Plunkett’s claim that ‘the royal image itself became photographic’, at least one of his critics has drawn attention to an appar- ent lack of agency in his portrayal of Victoria’s relationship to this process.2 My purpose here is not to adjudicate the degree of Victoria’s involvement in her photographic or fi lmic representation – especially in view of the limited and somewhat selective evidence available from royal archives. Rather, it is to con- nect the scattered fragments of evidence, in order to off er an account that does not underestimate Victoria’s active interest in the new photographic media, or create a false hiatus between still and moving pictures, while broadly agreeing with the many writers who have stressed how these reshaped the image of monarchy at the turn of the century.

The Delhi Durbar, 1911 Last Hurrah of the Raj The Grand Amphitheatre specially made for the Durbar of 1911, proclaiming an Empire at High Noon 1 xactly one hundred years ago, Delhi was witness to a dazzling spectacle — an EImperial Durbar, the magnificence of which the world had rarely seen. It was held in what is now known as Coronation Park in North Delhi. The occasion was to celebrate the visit to India and the coronation of the King Emperor George V and his consort, whose empire stretched across five continents. The Durbar was a grandiloquent gesture to proclaim the power and panoply of a Raj at High Noon. King George V & Queen Mary,1911; ‘It was entirely my own idea to hold the Coronation Durbar at Delhi in person’, the King said. As Prince of Wales, the King had first visited India with his consort in December 1905 as guests of the then Viceroy, Lord Curzon, and, captivated by India’s charms, had always wanted to return.
