(Sunday, March 4, 2012) – A busy final day in the second of three betting pools in Churchill Downs’ 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KOFW”) ended with the “All Others” (#24) betting interest narrowly edging individual choice Union Rags (#23) to emerge as the pool’s betting favorite and pushed total wagering for the year’s first two Derby pools past the $1 million mark. Along with the strong fan support for Fountain of Youth (GII) winner Union Rags as the horse most likely to win the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 5, there was substantial backing during the final hours of the pool for reigning 2-year-old champion Hansen, who rebounded from an upset loss in Gulfstream Park’s Holy Bull (GIII) to notch an impressive victory on Saturday in the $400,000 Gotham (GIII) at New York’s Aqueduct. The mutuel field, which is made up of all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses in each KDFW Pool and known to many fans simply as the “All Others” bet, was a narrow 3-1 bettors choice when Pool 2 wagering closed on Sunday at 6 p.m. (Eastern). Union Rags, the Michael Matz-trained son of Dixie Union, was close behind at 4-1. The eye-catching gray Hansen, trained by Mike Maker, was the 9-1 third choice and the only other individual horse among the pool’s 24 betting interests in single-digit odds at the conclusion of betting. Kentucky Derby fans wagered $411,368 in $2 win and exacta bets during the second Kentucky Derby Futures pool, which has been the smallest of the three betting pools every year since the bet was introduced in 1999, and that total pushed total Derby Future betting in 2102 to $1,042,672. The betting figure in the just-completed pool was the third-largest Pool 2 total in the 14-year history of the bet and it marked just only the fourth time the pool’s wagering had $400,000. The 2012 pool attracted win betting of $299,574 and $$111,794 in exacta wagering. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager annually offers fans opportunities to bet on candidates for the $2 million- guaranteed Kentucky Derby, America’s greatest race and one of the world’s premier sporting events, weeks in advance of Churchill Downs’ famed 1 ¼-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. Derby Future bettors receive odds that are in place at the conclusion of betting in each betting pool, and the odds could be significantly higher and more attractive than those available on the same horses if they make it into the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby. El Padrino (#7, 12-1), the Todd Pletcher-trained winner of the Risen Star (GIII) at Fair Grounds, was the fourth wagering choice in KDFW Pool 2, which included five horses trained by three-time Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert. The least-experienced Baffert horses – allowance winner Fed Biz (#9, 22-1) and maiden winner Bodemeister (#3, 29-1), attracted the strongest bettor support among his group. The others are Secret Circle (#21, 37-1), winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint and the second division of Oaklawn Park’s Southwest (GIII); CashCall Futurity (GI) winner Liaison (#13, 39-1) and Castaway (#4, 45-1), winner of the first Southwest division. - more - ‘All Others’ Edges Individual Choice Union Rags To Be Pool 2 Derby Futures Favorite; Betting Moves Past $1 Million Page 2 of 3 Sunday, March 4, 2012 Other notable individuals that attracted significant fan support over the three days of the second Kentucky Derby Futures pool included Norfolk (GI) winner Creative Cause (#5, 17-1), Withers (GIII) winner Alpha (#1, 19-1), Robert B. Lewis (GII) winner I’ll Have Another #12, 22-1) and Sham (GIII) winner Out of Bounds (#17, 23-1). The final Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool of 2012 is scheduled for March 30-April 1. (Friday, June 28, 2019) – When trainer Merrill Scherer attended Friday’s races at Churchill Downs, one of the biggest surprises met him when family and friends from across the country surprised the veteran conditioner for an advance celebration of his 80 th birthday. “I can’t believe I was swindled in to coming over for this,” Merrill joked. “This is unbelievable. I can’t believe everyone around the racetrack was able to keep their mouths shut and not tell me. This is a moment I will never forget.” Five of Scherer’s sons attended Friday, including fellow trainer Gary Scherer , who flew in from Minnesota where he currently is stabled at Canterbury Park. “The Scherers typically don’t see each other more than once a year,” said Clay Scherer , Merrill’s son and Kentucky-based bloodstock agent. “To get everyone together, including a lot of his owners, is very special.” Scherer began his training career in 1962 and has been at it ever since. Scherer has spent the majority of his career based in the Midwest with stints in Illinois, Kentucky and Louisiana. It wasn’t until 1993 when he won his first graded stakes race with Little Bro Lantis in the Stars and Stripes Handicap (GIII) at Arlington. Since statistics started being regularly kept for horse racing in 1976, Scherer has won 1,410 races with earnings of more than $24.6 million.

By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must
