The Death of Melody the Main Complaint in the Music Industry of Today Is the Loss of Musical Artistry WE REPORT THE STINGING TRUTH The Death of Melody The main complaint in the music industry of today is the loss of musical artistry. A unique and interesting melody is one of the main components to make a song into art. Yet many musicians are questioning the existence of fascinating melodies as intervals become shorter and repetition grows more constant. • Hip Hop, Memes, and the Internet
BY ALL MEMES NECESSARY: HIP HOP, MEMES, AND THE INTERNET MAX TRETTER FRIEDRICH-ALEXANDER-UNIVERSITY ERLANGEN-NUREMBERG INTRODUCTION: HIP HOP ON THE INTERNET The internet influences hip hop in various ways. First and foremost, the internet is a medium that opens up a new space and stage in which hip hop can be performed. This stage is no longer local, but global, which represents both opportunity and challenge. On the one hand, each hip hop artist must assert themselves against countless compet- itors from all over the world; on the other hand, their breakthrough online, if it suc- ceeds, can be monumental in comparison to an analog breakthrough, which is usually confined to a limited area. Therefore, for hip hop artists it is increasingly important to attract attention – as only those who get the attention succeed in this new medium (Prior 2018, Jenkins et al. 2013). The internet’s central influence on hip hop is the inten- sification of the battle for attention – which results in hip hop artists trying new ap- proaches and strategies to gain that attention. One of them is producing their content with an eye to making it as meme-able as possible and capitalizing on meme dynamics on the internet. In this study, I approach memes as a concept, following the definition of Dawkins (2006) who originally defined the concept of memes in his work The Selfish Gene. Memes are small units of information that are usually very simple and catchy (ges- tures, styles, melodies, or phrases). They are transmitted from person to person by imitation or adaption, replicate and spread very quickly, and contribute to the dissem- ination and formation of common behaviors and cultures (Dawkins 2006).

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS MSc IN COMPUTER SCIENCE M.Sc. Thesis «Identifying Interests and Expertise in the Twitter Social Network» Evita Zoi Bakopoulou Student ID: 1418 Advisor: Prof. Vana Kalogeraki ATHENS, FEBRUARY, 2016 ii “Social media is the ultimate equalizer. It gives a voice and a platform to anyone willing to engage.” Amy Jo Martin iii ATHENS UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS Abstract Department of Informatics Master of Science in Computer Science Identifying Interests and Expertise in the Twitter Social Network by Evita Zoi Bakopoulou Social media have become very popular in recent years and con- stitute a powerful source of information. Twitter users have various interests and expertise levels, and we believe that their profile data can be explored to better tailor crowdsourcing systems to the needs of spe- cific tasks. This thesis aims to infer the interests and expertise of users in a Twitter sample data set, and use these user profiles when assigning tasks to the users in a crowdsourcing system. For example, user exper- tise can provide important benefit when solving complex tasks or for avoiding non-legitimate answers. Our work ensures that user answers will have higher validity, as there will be a better match between the user interests and the issued tasks, thus tasks requiring expertise will be appropriately assigned to corresponding users. Various features in Twitter can be used in such a system, e.g., Users’ lists, which could indicate the users’ interests based on whether the users are subscribed to a list, and their expertise can be determined if they are added to ex- isting lists by other users.

Works Cited 46 Appendix 49 Abstract Beyoncé’s latest album has become an instant social phenomenon worldwide. Given its innovative poetic, visual, musical and socio-politic impact, the famous and controversial African American singer has taken an untraveled road—both personal and professional. The purpose of this essay is to provide a close reading of the poetry, music, lyrics and visuals in four sections from Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade (2016). To this end, I have chosen what I believe are the most representative sections of Lemonade together with their respective songs. Thus, I focus on the song “Hold Up” from Denial; “Daddy Lessons” from Accountability, “Freedom” from Hope, and “Formation,” where Beyoncé addresses topics such as infidelity, racism, women’s representation, and racism and inequality. I analyse these topics through a close-reading and interpretation of Warsan Shire’s poetry (a source of inspiration), as well as Beyoncé’s own music, lyrics, and imagery. From this analysis, it is safe to say that Lemonade is a relevant work of art that will perdure in time, since it highlights positive representations of African-Americans, at the same time Beyoncé critically denounces the current racial unrest lived in the USA.

It is becoming one of the most dominant genres in the world and influencing popular culture more and more as the years go on. One of the main things that makes hip hop unique from other genres is the emphasis on the lyricist. While many other genres will have a drummer, guitarist, bassist, or keyboardist, hip hop is different because most songs are not crafted in the traditional way of a band putting music together. Because of this, the genre tends to focus on the lyrics.

Doi: 10.52462/jlls.44 Submission Date:25/12/2020 Acceptance Date:20/02/2021 Abstract The study identifies the archetypal motives of the Hero and the Seeker in modern rap lyrics, demonstrating a certain archetypal basis of the rap artists’ identity. The problem of the archetype-identity correlation has been solved through the use of the method prioritizing the discursive role invariant as the index of the artists’ both psychic dispositions and cultural-semiotic background, thus performing identity eliciting function. The aim of the article is to identify the rappers’ archetypal roles of Hero and Seeker based on the linguistic and narrative devices. Four motive-descriptors underlying the Hero archetype are manifested by role invariants of Champion- winner, Warrior-soldier, prophet / savior and noble rescuer. Each of them is based either on the metaphorical interpretation of rap performance as the sporting contest, a battle at war, the Universe and blessing, or on allusions to precedential characters significant for the rap artists’ self-identification.

Promise That You Will Sing About Me: Kendrick Lamar and Posterity Sometimes it would seem that the quietest moments turn out to have the loudest repercussions. This would certainly seem to be a consistent case for twenty eight-year old Kendrick Lamar, whose career has been defined by surprise and unannounced publications of music that shortly afterward are spun wildly into massively respected works of art. With an album that no one anticipated going to the 2013 Grammy awards, an album that leaked a week ahead of schedule (and brought Kendrick 5 Grammys), and an album that was released with almost no warning whatsoever, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth makes headlines with his art; of this there is no doubt. The question, however, as posed by Kendrick himself, is this: “And I hope that at least one of you sing about me when I’m gone; Am I worth it? Did I put enough work in?”1 I would like to argue that Kendrick Lamar belongs in music history textbooks of the future because of his performance abilities, intellectual and lyrical content (particularly relative to his peers), musical push within the rap genre, and his position with critics and fans alike.

Kanye West and Male Emotionality 1 The Department of Communication Arts and Sciences Kanye West, Emotionality, & Individualism – Pioneering a Paradigm Shift Amongst Rap’s Elite Cory Steinle The Pennsylvania State University Kanye West and Male Emotionality 2 Abstract By analyzing countless song lyrics, criminal data, and investigate interviews from popular rappers, I was able to draw the conclusion that Kanye West had a significant and quantifiable impact on the frequency of emotionality & individualism within popular rap music. His status as a celebrity allowed for the cathartic release of emotions throughout his music career to be labeled as “revolutionary.”. At the time he released his freshman album, The College Dropout (2004), violence and hate were two emotions largely represented in the popular rap sphere. This was the aftermath of a previous decade of rap music besieged by violent, criminalistics themes inspired by rap’s very best – Biggie, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and N.W.A. However, with Kanye’s new “pink polo” Chicago style, he was successfully able to enter the marketplace with a unique, individualistic style and sound. Themes of individualism and healthy emotionality can be found throughout his career, from his 2002 single “Through the Wire” through his seventh solo studio album, The Life of Pablo (2016). He stayed true to these themes throughout his first three studio albums, but it was his fourth album, 808’s & Heartbreak, that truly shifted the paradigm of rap music. This album cemented West’s place in history as one of the most influential artists of his time, inspiring many of his peers to adopt similar styles and motives as his own.
