Dr Lynne Anderson

As most of you will already know, Wednesday, 20th June was Dr Anderson’s last day at Thorverton Surgery. Lynne joined the practice in January 2008 and on her final afternoon many colleagues and patients gathered at the WI Hut in Thorverton for her farewell tea party (photos by John Spivey right and below). Lynne is not only a great doctor who is highly respected for her medical abilities but she’s also a warm, kind and compassionate human being. As I heard several people remark, “she was one of us and we’re really going to miss her”.

We wish you good luck in your future, Lynne and thank you for looking after us so well for the past ten years.

Focus on Thorverton 5 Vol 49 No 7 – July/August 2018 ______Thorverton Parish Council Listed below are some points raised at the Parish Council (PC) meeting held on 12th June 2018. The latest meeting minutes can be viewed on the notice board in School Lane and on the website. The next meeting will take place on 10th July 2018 in the WI Hut at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend. Alison Marshall – Clerk. [email protected] www.thorvertonparishcouncil.org.uk

______

Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT): following a presentation by Toby Russell, of DAAT, the PC resolved to ask for public feedback regarding a helicopter night landing site at the Recreation Ground. Past figures show that, on average, the site may be used twice in a year. If you have any comments to make in this regard please send them to the Clerk at [email protected] or talk to a Parish Councillor.

New Cemetery: the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) had responded positively to the PC’s initial enquiry for funding regarding the required archaeological dig on the chosen site off Dark Lane. Following a presentation by John Valentin, of AC Archaeology, it was resolved that the working group should meet with Mr Valentin to put together an Action Plan regarding the way forward and to include a full bid application for £25,000 to the HLF.

S106 Court Barton funding: last month, after public feedback, the PC resolved to purchase some land, between Silver Street and the steam, to enable suggestions from the public to be implemented regarding the spending of the S106 funding. The Church Commissioners (CC) had since responded to the PC’s request in that it was not prepared to sell the said land at the current time. It was resolved that the Clerk would now discuss the matter further with the CC’s Agent in order that the project can be moved forward at the July PC meeting.

Dark Lane wall: a Structural Engineers report had been received and, after a review, it was resolved that due to the extensive costs and work involved Cllrs Bright and Lawson would research the implications of the report, on behalf of the PC, in order that a way forward could be established at the July PC meeting.

Village Tidy Up Day – Saturday July 7th 2018 - at 10am: if you have a couple of hours free why not join the village Tidy Up Team for a spot of exercise and a natter? Meet at Leigh Gardens (beside the Thorverton Arms) at 10am to review the tasks on offer which could include clearing the stream and leats, weeding, gardening, rubbing down and re-varnishing benches and cleaning road signs. Bring gloves and any tools that might be appropriate. See you there!

Grant Funding: the PC resolved to give the Royal British Legion the sum of £200.00 towards its WW1 commemorative event in November.

Planning: 17/01716/FULL widening of the existing access to agricultural land at School Lane, Thorverton. No member of the PC was available to attend the Planning Committee meeting on 13th June and it was resolved to submit no further comment to MDDC. It was noted that Cllr Bright had attended two previous meetings, on behalf of the PC, and that the PC had objected to this application. 18/00656/House erection of a 2 storey side extension plus single storey extensions to the front and rear at 4 Cleaves Close, Thorverton. It was resolved to make no comment regarding this application. 18/00704/FULL retention of change of use from ancillary accommodation to holiday let at The Stables, Thorverton. It was resolved to make no comment regarding this application. 18/00884/FULL erection of a garage at The Tallet Barn, Heathfield, Thorverton. It was resolved to make no comment regarding this application.

Your Parish Councillors: Nick Bright (Chairman), Stuart Crang (Vice Chairman), John Hodge, Neville Lane, Hilary Lawson, David Reygate, Graham Sims, John Spivey, Robert Turner and David Waldron.

I have received plenty of positive feedback about the improved look of the magazine as a result of this. Strangely though, none of the Focus team had ever met any of the printing team. I felt that it was time to put this right, so at the end of May I drove to a small business park near Old Sarum (just a couple of miles from Salisbury to meet the team.

Sarum Graphics is a three-person team: from left to right in the photo below, Darren, Richard and Paul:

The pages of Focus – all printed on A3 – were stacked in one machine, from which they were electronically collated, folded and stapled. It was all rather a far cry from just over a year ago when 15 people gathered round tables in the room at the back of the Baptist Church to manually collate Focus.

The printing had taken place the previous day

(actually it was on the Friday because my visit was Richard was just overseeing the collation and on the day after the late-May Bank Holiday Monday) stapling of the magazine when I arrived: in order that the ink is absolutely dry before any collation and stapling takes place. There were two printing machines, both rather too large for me to be able to show

Over a cup of tea, I discussed with Paul the options for producing a 2019 Thorverton calendar. We intend to go ahead with this, so please see the separate article on how to submit photos for the calendar. We also discussed the possibility of producing some local walks either in book form or on separate cards. And then, after getting several samples of other village magazines and calendars, I thanked the team for their work over the past year and loaded up the five boxes of our June magazine before getting on my way. Girl on a Smartphone The following poem is based on two recent experiences in Australia. The first was the sight of five teenagers sitting around a table in a Perth café, each with smartphone in hand, not saying a word to one another. The second: on my observation an attractive girl in a bikini stretched out on a lounger next to the pool in which I happened to be swimming (and no, I did not chat her up!)

The girl in the bikini / Seems possessed/She lies on the pool chair / Quite obsessed With the small silver object / She holds in her hand/ Nothing it seems/ goes quite as planned. She first puts it down/ And then takes it up/ She handles it gently/ Like an adorable pup. This silver smartphone/ Will not let her be/ And it’s perfectly clear/ It’s smarter than she. It’s her constant companion/Both night and day/She lives in the dread/ That it might go away. Something is missing / She doesn’t know what/ And clearly its absence/ Hurts her a lot. She checks it continuously/ Time and again/ To be with it her pleasure/ Without it her pain. She dials a brief number/ Puts the phone to her ear/ The sound of its silence / What she most has to fear. A smartphone it's clear/ Is a state of mind/ And this one's intent/ On being unkind. Its indifference disturbs her/ She hangs in a while/ As if she is waiting/ For its grateful smile. Suddenly it rings/O joy to the world/ The source of her laughter/ Both seen and heard. She embraces the phone/Both arms expand/ She cuddles this baby/ Safe in her hand, Her face now a study/In consummate bliss./ All that is lacking?/ A lingering kiss.

Lorraine Colebrook If you have enough space, always a tricky point with vegetable gardeners, it is advisable with garlic and especially onions to plant two crops. One in the autumn and one in spring. With this in mind, now is a good time to begin to prepare for your autumn crop and this is where a good rotation will help you. My autumn onions follow my early potatoes. The potatoes are about ready to harvest and when I clear a row I will gradually add well rotted manure to the plot to dig in for the autumn planting. It is not impossible to still use this plot for a lettuce crop. Lettuce being a greedy feeder will be quite happy to give you a quick crop in rich soil. I will use plants not seed in this case.

Whatever you decide to do it is always good to think this far ahead. So, for autumn leeks, sow some seed now. A good tip for leeks is to use a bucket for sowing seed. Fill with seed compost, or a mix of garden soil and compost, to just over half full. Sow the seed and just cover with soil. Keep moist and out
