A Note on Sungsang Village at the Estuary of the Musi River in Southeastern Sumatra: a Reconsideration of the Historical Geography of the Palembang Region A NOTE ON SUNGSANG VILLAGE AT THE ESTUARY OF THE MUSI RIVER IN SOUTHEASTERN SUMATRA: A RECONSIDERATION OF THE HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE PALEMBANG REGION 0. W. Wolters On July 4, 1978, I had the opportunity of visiting the estuarine village of Sungsang.i My companions and I went there to search for surface sherds. We left with more than we had expected, for we were able to recover the historical geography of the lower reaches of the Musi river more accurately than I had done when I wrote an article on the subject for In d on esia in 1975.1 2 In this note I shall revise my earlier understanding of Chinese texts of the Ming period and shall invoke geological evidence in support of my revised interpretation of their contents. I shall suggest that, contrary to my suggestion in 1975, the present estuary and shipping fairway, connecting Palembang with the sea, have not substantially changed since the fourteenth century. Sungsang v illage is less than five miles from where the Musi river debouches into the Bangka Strait and is approximately fift y miles down­ stream from the modern city of Palembang.3 * The journey took about two hours in small craft powered by outboard motors.1* Sungsang is o ff to port when one travels downstream, and we spotted it soon after the Menumbing range of h ills , pale in the distance, came into sight at the northwestern end of Bangka Islan d .5 * The spacious view out to sea is 1I accompanied Dra. Here was one of the busiest shipping lanes in early Asian history. Sungsang v illage is on the estuary's western shore and faces up­ stream at the edge of a large bay; it also extends along the coast towards the sea.6 The main street is built on t a ll wooden poles over the tidal waters, but a substantial stretch of land lies behind the street to the north. Sungsang was one meter above sea-level in 1975.7 Our v is it was too b rie f to enable us to go far inland towards the northern seashore, but we were told that a rice cultivation project was under way. The expanse of firm land is probably quite consider­ a b le .8 We visited Sungsang because Palembang motorboat skippers had told us that we should go there if we wanted to find sherds, and, indeed, we saw numerous ones on the surface not far behind the main stre e t.9 The sherds were chiefly nineteenth century Dutch and Chinese ware, but Mr. McKinnon identified a few pieces as earlier Chinese products of the IVan-li reign-period (1572-1620) and also of the Sawankhalok kilns of northern Thailand.10 Mr. James Watt, of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, later told me that specimens of Wan-li ceramics could be expected to reach Southeast Asia not long after their production and could also be expected to be found alongside Sawankhalok sherds.11 The ceramic evidence suggests that Sungsang was an inhabited settlement as early as about 1600, which would not be remarkable; the settlement undoubtedly existed in 1681, when it is mentioned in an agreement reached between the Vereenigde Oost- Indische Compagnie and the Sultan of Palembang.12 But our v is it to Sungsang enabled us to interpret other documentary evidence that indicates that the settlement existed at least two centuries earlier than 1600. "Sungsang" is written "Sousang" in the agreement but appears as "Soensang" in the index to this volume. 35 cance when I wrote my article in Indonesia in 1975 on the historical geography of the Palembang area.13 I submit my revised views for the judgment of geologists, to whom the analysis of the changing morphol­ ogy of the Musi river basin is as much a challenge as it is to his­ torians . During the fir s t decades of the fifteenth century, the Ming fleets, often under Cheng Ho’ s command, sailed frequently in Indone­ sian waters and visited the Palembang coast no less than four tim es.14 15 The accumulated navigational notations were recorded, together with additional maritime experiences, in sailing directions known as the Shun-feng hsiang-sung, written about 1620 . 1 5 The preface to the com­ pilation mentions how, during the expeditions in Cheng Hors day, charts of ’’the direction of the compass-needle and the guiding stars” were ’’compared and corrected.” 16 An immense body of geographical knowledge became available as the result of the activities of the Ming fleet in the early fifteenth cen­ tury, and the seamen’ s handling of this knowledge would have been simi­ lar to the handling of records by the compilers of the chapters on foreign countries in the Chinese imperial histories. The historians rarely discarded earlier information, and the effect is that their work reads less as revised and critic a l statements than as a sequence of raw entries of different vintages that were extracted from official file s . Those who compiled navigational data would have behaved in a similarly conservative manner, introducing new material only when there were gaps in the older sources but never eliminating older material unless such material was palpably obsolete; after all, sailing direc­ tions were intended to be of practical value in helping pilots reach ports where trading opportunities existed. For example, the Shun-feng hsiang-sung incorporates later information about the shipping routes to and from the port that served Aceh, which had not existed at the time of the great Ming expeditions in the fifteenth century when Lamri and Pasai were the important centers on the northern coast of Sumatra. On the other hand, the continuing survival in the sailing direc­ tions of the expeditions’ navigational experience off the Palembang coast is revealed in two ways. In the fir s t place, there are no r e f­ erences to routes to the ports of the Riau-Johore state, where the former rulers of Malacca had their base after Malacca fe ll to the Portuguese in 1511. Malacca is always the major terminus on the Malay Peninsula. Second, the sailing directions do not mention Jambi, and I attribute this circumstance to Jambi*s temporary decline as an impor­ tant trading center after the Javanese attack of 1377.17 Thus, the sailing directions for western Indonesian waters seem to reflect the p o litical situation in Cheng Ho’ s day. This study provided understanding of morphometric variation and diet composition of three species of mudskippers, i.e. Boleophthalmus boddarti, Periophthalmodon schlosseri, and Periophthalmus chrysospilos. The data obtained can be used for fish cultivation in the future. The relation of weight and length of species B. boddarti, P. schlosseri and P. chrysospilos had a correlation of 72.2%, 98.2%, and 94.5% , respectively with the value of b = 1.474, 3.189, and 2.271, respectively. This suggests that the growth patterns of B. boddarti and P. chrysospilos are allometrically negative, while P. schlosseri is allometrically positive. B. boddarti is classified as a herbivore, the main food of phytoplankton from Bacillariophyceae class with percentage 100%; 80% of Chlorophyceae; 95.6% of Cyanophyceae; 13.33% of Desmidiaceae; 13.33% of Euglenophyceae and 37.78% of Xanthophyceae. P. schlosseri is classified as carnivores, the main food is Uca sp.

This study is intentioned to capture the meaning of Musi riparian culture, which covers 16 Ilir Market area, the oldest trade center in Palembang with significant historic characteristics. By architectural phenomenology approach, this study is aimed to capture the genius loci in the area. Using qualitative research methods through the “genius loci” framework will be traced to the existence of the Musi riparian area. The results show that interactions between humans and rivers generate the spirit of this place, such as various activities, diverse ethnicity, and significant cultural history narration. Thus interaction is essential to maintain the unique characteristics of Musi riparian culture in modern times. The study employed an interpretive approach, more specifically the symbolic interactionist and dramaturgical tradition. The researchers focused on intercultural communication experiences and competence as enacted by the 25 Chinese in the area of the research. The study used in-depth interviews with the Chinese as the main method with some observation of the Chinese communication with the Malays. The researchers also interviewed eight Malays as additional subjects of the research to corroborate the research findings. The study found that the Chinese in Bangka Island perceived themselves as open and willing to mingle with the Malays. They are hospitable, hardworking, tenacious, frugal, and fond of maintaining long-term relationships. In contrast, in the Chinese view, the Malays are open and willing to mingle with others, obedient to the teachings of Islam, but they are lazy and are keen on being flattered, consumptive, and easily seduced. In terms of their intercultural communication competence, the Chinese are skillful in their self-presentation by employing various verbal and nonverbal tactics to adjust themselves to the interpersonal, group, and business situations where they encounter the Malays in their everyday lives.

This research used a quantitative descriptive method by using primary data to describe the quality of river estuary water and compared it to the Ministerial Regulation of Marine Affairs and Fisheries No. 72 of 2016 concerning Guidelines for Enlargement of Tiger and Vaname Shrimps Farming in Ponds. Analysis of determining the status of water pollution in river estuary in Bulungan Regency used the Pollution Index (PI) referring to the Decree of the Minister of the Environment No. 115 of 2003 concerning Guidelines for Determination of Water Quality Status. The results showed that the parameters of alkalinity, ammonia, nitrite and phosphate did not fulfill the quality standard, while the parameters of water temperature, salinity, water pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, H2S, Pb, Cd, and Hg still fulfilled the quality standard.

    Toward an Integrated Perspective on Agricultural Drainage 31 4. Drainage and Integrated Water Resources Management: Two Basins This section explores the different contexts of integrated water resources management in Indonesia’s outer and the inner islands and the place of drainage in integrated water resources management. The case of Indonesia is of more than passing interest. As discussed above, earlier than other countries Indonesia adopted the principles of integrated water resources management in its main policy documents and started to reform its institutions to accommodate the possibility of river basin management. Two basins are discussed in this section, the Jratunseluna Basin in Central Java and the Musi Basin in South Sumatra in the outer islands. These contrasting basins reflect Indonesia’s great diversity, which requires different approaches in each context. Both areas are economically important—each in its own way. South Sumatra has been a fast-growing, overspill area from the Javanese heartland. The main water challenge in the Musi Basin is to improve agricultural productivity while safeguarding environmental sustainability in the lowlands. Sampling was carried out using the purposive sampling method by following fishermen exploring water areas where there were estimated to be a lot of fish. The fishing gear used is nets, fishing rods, fishing rods and traps. The fish obtained were photographed and preserved in a coolbox with 10% formalin. Fish were identified and classified in the Biology laboratory of PGRI Palembang University. The types of fish of the order Perciformes obtained consisted of Familia Latidae species Lates calcarifer, family Scatophagidae species Scatophagus argus, family Serranidae species Epinephelus coiodes, familia Polynemidae species Eleutheronema tetradactylum. ABSTRAK Penelitian Morfometrik dan Meristik Jenis-jenis ikan ordo Perciformes di Muara Sungai Banyuasin Kabupaten Banyuasin Provinsi Sumatera Selatan telah dilakukan bulan Maret- April 2021. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan meggunakan metode purposive sampling dengan mengikuti nelayan menjelajahi area perairan yang diperkirakan terdapat banyak ikan. Alat tangkap yang digunakan jala, waring ,pancing dan bubu. Ikan yang didapat difoto dan diawetkan dalam coolbox berformalin 10%. Ikan diidentifikasi dan diklasifikasikan di laboratorium Biologi Universitas PGRI Palembang.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the flora diversity and characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Pulau Rimau Protection Forest, Banyuasin District, South Sumatra. Data collected were the number and girth diameter of mangrove tree species, and aquatic ecology parameters using transect method. The sample plots size were 2m×2 m; 5m×5 m; 10m×10 m; for seedling, sapling, and tree, respectively. The observation plots were arranged in a row of 120 m length on two sides of the forest edge, namely Calik Riverbank and Banyuasin Riverbank. Data were analyzed using importance value index (IVI), Simpson’s diversity index and Sørensen’s community similarity.
